New movies set holiday eve record

Chinese moviegoers set a box office (票房) record for the eve of the week—long National Day holiday. By 9:30 p.m. September 30, new movies had brought in 630 million yuan.

The major movies contributing to the box office record were My People, My Country, The Captain and The Climbers.

My People, My Country ranked first by bringing in around 270 million yuan. It was made up of seven short stories which were set in historic moments to look back at New China’s 70 years of existence. The movie was co-directed by Chen Kaige, Zhang Yibai, Guan Hu, Xue Xiaolu, Xu Zheng, Ning Hao and Wen Muye.

Another well-received film, The Captain, earned 194 million yuan to occupy second place. Starring actor Zhang Hanyu, the film is based on heroic Sichuan Airlines pilot Liu Chuanjian, who completed one of the most miraculous (奇迹的) emergency landings in China’s civil aviation (民航) history.

Also adapted from real events, The Climbers earned 157 million yuan. With an excellent cast including Zhang Ziyi and Wu Jing, the film is about Chinese mountaineers’ climbing to the top of Mount Qomolangma.

Wu Jing said the film filled a gap in the market, with sports-themed titles quite rare in the world’s second-largest movie market.

He Zehui, a Chinese nuclear physicist, accomplished great things in physics and became an outstanding scientist.

Her family is famous for producing three famous women scientists, including her two sisters. She graduated from Tsinghua University in 1936 with a degree in physics, and then went on to study at the Technical University of Berlin, where she was the top in her class, outperforming her future husband Qian Sanqiang — China's "father of the atomic bomb”. In 1940, she earned a Ph. D. in Engineering.

The couple made great discoveries in the field of uranium fission (铀核裂变),which drew global attention and earned them worldwide reputations, also marking a milestone in the development of China's experimental fission physics. Many Western media called the couple the “Marie Curie and Pierre Curie of China”

As one of the pioneers in nuclear science and technology in China, Professor He contributed a great deal to nuclear physics. During the 1950s, she started the research and development of nuclear emulsions(核乳胶)in China and their research reached the advanced world level at that time. He and her research group took the lead in building China's first nuclear reactor and accelerator. She was awarded the first Award of the National Prize of Natural Sciences for making outstanding achievements in supporting the national program of nuclear weapon development.

Throughout her career, He conquered many obstacles, and was always on the front lines of China's science-related work. She published dozens of papers yet placed little value on personal fame. The world's top physicists recognized He as a famous scientist, “ Chinese Madame Curie”.

He passed away in Beijing in 2011 at the age of 97, nearly 20 years after Qian Sanqiang. She dedicated herself to science, living a simple life, always nurturing young researchers and maintaining the highest standards that she had always valued. She loved her country and science; to both she is now an icon.

The other day, I bought an expensive anti-aging cream that promised to make my face look several years younger than other women by fighting free radicals. It made me curious about what free radicals are. Is the anti-aging cream the only way I need to protect myself?

“As a scientific term, free radicals are essentially unstable atoms, “says Arizona-based doctor, Natasha Bhuyan, M. D. “In medicine, they cause cells to break down over time and are linked to aging.”

A super simple chemistry review for you: Atoms from different elements are the building blocks that make up water, nitrogen and more. Electrons (电子) are the negatively charged atoms, and they like to be in pairs. When an electron loses its partner, it creates a free radical, which is usually unstable and highly reactive. Free radicals typically go through the body to seek out a replacement for their missing electron, and that can result in damage to cells, proteins and DNA.

So how do free radicals form and why do they happen? Bhuyan says, “Scientifically, free radicals are unpaired electrons that are seeking a mate to bond with. The theory behind free radicals is that they can lead to the imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants (抗氧化剂).” Another mini-science lesson for you: Antioxidants are natural or man made matters that can help delay or prevent some types of cell damage. They’re often found in fruits and vegetables.

A lot of the aspects of modern life — our diet, lifestyle and environmental factors like pollution, can cause oxidative stress. Over time, oxidative stress weakens cell and tissues and can leave you more easily to certain health issues including cancer. And, as beauty marketers are keenly aware, oxidative stress can also speed up the aging process. Now that your know free radicals can weak on your health, you’re probably wondering if there are any ways to prevent them from forming or at least to minimize their negative effects.

    28. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1?

    A. Explain the process of aging. B. State the formation of free radicals.

    C. Describe the harm of anti aging cream.       D. Introduce the topic of free radicals.

    29. Which of the following do free radicals refer to?

    A. Steady atoms.                           B. Unpaired electrons.

    C. Replacements of atoms. D. Functions of electrons.

    30. What can we learn about antioxidants from the text?

    A. They have never been found in nature.

    B. They do harm to cells, proteins and DNA.

    C. They always keep balance with free radical.

    D. They can slow down the damage of some cells.

    31. What will the author probably tell us next?

    A. What exactly oxidative stress is. B. How beauty marketers promote sales.

    C. Whether free radicals can be prevented. D. Where a variety of diseases come from.

    D

There are many protected areas all over the world from invasive species. However, most of them are still vulnerable (易受伤害的) to invasion, according to a research conducted by scientists from China and the UK.

The study, led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was published in the journal Nature Communications. It showed how the majority of protected areas are no more than 10 kilometers away from an area with the presence of invasive species. Tim Blackburn, a co-author of the study and a professor from University College London, said that introducing invasive species is among the worst damage that humans can inflict to the natural environment.

Invasive alien species or IAS can harm an ecosystem by competing with or killing native species and destroying habitats, among many impacts. Aliens are species that are not naturally occurring in a particular area and are introduced through humans. Invasion by such species is considered as among the five worst direct drivers of biodiversity loss worldwide. Aliens establish populations at more new areas at an ever-increasing pace.

The researchers discovered that lower than ten percent of protected areas have the 894 surveyed invasive species within them, which suggests that, in general, protected areas are effectively shielded against invasion. However, all of them are still at risk from IAS, because at least one alien species was found within 100 kilometers of 99% of the surveyed protected areas’ boundaries.

The research team also discovered that protected regions that contain more invasive animal species experience a more significant influence or presence of humans, otherwise known as the human footprint index. This is caused by factors like large human populations and transport links.

In addition, protected areas that have been established more recently and are more extensive have a more significant number of IAS. The older protected areas are usually in more remote locations, which provide them with better protection from human impacts.

Dr. Li who is a famous biologist said that for now, the majority of protected areas are free from IAS. Still, it may not be true for long. He adds that those areas which are easily accessible to many people count as the most highly vulnerable.

    32. Which word is closest to the underlined word “inflict” in meaning in paragraph 2?

    A. Cause.              B. Contribute. C. Practise. D. Prevent.

    33. What can we learn from the third paragraph?

    A. Native species are not strong enough to compete with aliens.

    B. Alien species are dangerous to native species and their habitats.

    C. Alien species have a much stronger appetite than native species.

    D. The number of native species increases more slowly than that of alien species.

    34. What is also closely related to the alien invasion according to the study?

    A. Human activity. B. The local weather.

    C. Regional locations.      D. Practical measures.

    35. What’s Dr. Li’s attitude towards the future of protected areas?

    A. Positive. B. Subjective. C. Worried. D. Uncaring.
