Sme f us are afraid f heights, lud nises r tight spaces, while thers have fears f mre specific things like snakes, spiders r clwns. One fairly universal fear, especially fr children, is a fear f the dark. Harmless things we wuld ignre during the day can becme frightening in the dark f night. Nt everything, hwever, is scarier in the dark. New research by Dng Ping suggests that when the lights are ut, we are less fearful f getting a cntagius (传染性的) disease.
In the new research, participants were asked t first view and evaluate a brief dcumentary film. Half the participants watched the film with the lights n, and half with the lights ff. Each participant sat clse t a trained partner, wh intentinally cughed and sniffed during the sessin. What's mre, the partner made precisely the same number f cughs/sniffles each sessin, regardless f the lighting. Participants then cmpleted a task in which they tk_stck_f the pssibility f getting seasnal flu. Their judgments f getting the seasnal flu were significantly reduced when the lights became dim (昏暗的).
One pssibility is that participants tested in the dark were simply less likely n ntice the cughing and sniffing behavir f the partner.
Hwever, Dng suggests that the reductin in sensed risk f cntagin results frm changes in the way that we sense and think abut the wrld. When it is dark, we are mre likely t create glbal features rather than specific details, and this in turn may increase ur sensed scial distance frm thers. When we feel that we are mre distant frm thers, ur sense f cntagin risk decreases.
T assess this pssibility, Dng cpied their initial mdel and included measures f sensed scial distance. Once again participants tested in the dark reprted lwer sensed risk f getting the flu than thse tested in a bright rm. In additin, visual darkness increased participants' sensed distance frm the trained partner, and this increase in distance brught abut the reductin in sensed risk f cntagin in the dark. Their fear f nncntagius diseases didn't depend n the lighting.
