Ten years ag, I set ut t examine luck. I wanted t knw why sme peple are 1 in the right place at the right time, while thers cnsistently experienced ill frtune. I placed ntices in natinal newspapers asking fr peple wh felt cnsistently lucky r unlucky t 2 me.

Hundreds f extrardinary men and wmen vlunteered fr my 3 . Over the years I interviewed them, watched their lives and had them 4 varius experiments.

I carried ut a simple 5 t discver whether their differences in luck was due t differences in their ability t 6 pprtunities. I gave bth the lucky and unlucky peple a newspaper, and asked them t lk 7 it and tell me hw many phtgraphs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway thrugh the newspaper saying … “Tell the experimenter yu have seen this and win $50.”

This 8 tk up half f the page and was written in type that was mre than tw inches high. It was staring everyne straight in the face, but the unlucky peple tended t 9 it and the lucky peple tended t spt it.

Unlucky peple are generally mre 10 than lucky peple, and this anxiety affects their ability t ntice the unexpected. As a result, they miss pprtunities because they are t fcused n lking fr smething else. They g t gatherings fcused n finding their perfect partner and miss pprtunities t make gd friends. They lk thrugh newspapers 11 t find certain types f jb advertisements and miss ther types f 12 .

Lucky peple are mre 13 and pen, and therefre see what is there rather than just what they are lking fr. My research eventually shwed that lucky peple create gd frtune via fur 14 . They

are skilled at creating and 15 chance pprtunities, make lucky decisins by listening t their intuitin (直觉), create self-fulfilling prphesies (预言) via psitive expectatins and adpt a “never say die” attitude that transfrms bad luck int gd.

Unfrtunately, while their effect may nt be 11 in the ff-seasn, the cnstant parade f visitrs in the high seasn can be damaging. At ne natinal park in Csta Rica, wild mnkeys nw feed n garbage left by the turists. 12 , ecturists tend t seek ut places with the rarest animals and plants, 13 the mst delicate living things.

It is easy t be critical f the ecturism industry, but it is imprtant t be 14 as well. Ecturism can never be"pure". We can't expect zer negative effects n the ecsystem. It is als 5 t suppse that humans wn't g anywhere accessible t them. If prtectin effrts are maintained and increased, thse remaining places f undisturbed nature may be stressed, but they wn't be destryed.
