When most high school students complain about having to wake up extra early, they're usually referring to a swim practice before class or the lastminute study before a test. But that was never the case for Corey Patrick, who woke up at 4:30 every morning last year in order to arrive on time at Tarrant High School in Alabama.
Patrick had attended Tarrant City Schools since his fourth grade, but things got difficult when his family moved to a town 14 miles away.Even though his family didn't have any forms of transportation,Patrick didn't want to miss out on his senior year with friends,so he woke up at 4:30 every morning in order to make it to a 5:41 a.m.bus that would help him get to Tarrant on time. And just as he had done every other school day of the year,Patrick got up one morning to start the journey from his home to his high school; the only obvious difference that morning was that he was wearing his graduation gown (毕业礼服),which made that day's bus driver,DeJuanna Beasley, take some photos of him.She then shared them online with these words,“You tell me this isn't determination. He got on my bus to go to his graduation, and no one was with him.Sometimes it's all in what you want out of life.I was so proud of this young man.”
That was soon shared by many people online, and it caught the attention of radio host Rickey Smiley, who surprised Patrick by giving him a car later.Smiley confirmed that he would make sure that Patrick received help with getting his driver's license.A GoFundMe was also created for Patrick, which has raised over $20,000.And Patrick has got a scholarship (奖学金) to Jacksonville University, where he plans to study computer science.

Exercise is good for us.It reduces the risks of dying from all causes, including cancer and heart disease. But many people who work all week have little time for exercise. So,they might try to do something to increase their heart rates over the weekend—go for a long run, take a bike ride or hike in the mountains. But is it healthy to avoid exercise during the workweek and then try to fit it all in during the weekend?
A new study suggests that, yes,it is healthy.Australian researchers at the University of Sydney did the study. It took place over a nineyear period.During that time, the researchers looked at the selfreported exercise habits and health examinations of more than 63,000 adults in England and Scotland. Then they connected that information to death records.
The researchers found that people who exercised only one or two days a week improved their chances of living longer than people who did not exercise at all.Even those who are fat could extend(延长)their lives by exercising a couple of days per week.
Emmanuel Stamatakis is the senior author of the study. He says that he found it very encouraging that even people who exercised as little as one or two times a week appear to lower their risk of early death. In other words, their health improves even if they don't meet the suggested weekly amount of physical activity. However,to be in the best health,Stamatakis says more exercise is better.
The WHO suggests that the adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) to intense (剧烈的) activity per week. For the best results, the organization suggests 75 minutes per week of intense physical activity.
However,if you are busy with work and family duties, exercise as much as you can.

When Lenore Skenazy let her 9yearold son take the New York subway home by himself 10 years ago,you would have thought that she'd carried out a crime. Now Skenazy started the movement Free Range (放养的) Kids to bring up safe and independent children.Just this month,Utah became a freerange state, changing its law to protect parents from being charged with neglect (疏忽)for letting their kids walk alone,or wait in a car for an adult.
Skenazy argues that the risks of giving children some freedom are exaggerated (夸大).Skenazy's mother used to send her outside at 5 to walk to school. That was just normal back then. And suddenly we hear stories about parents getting punished for letting their 10yearold play outside.
We get so used to not knowing our neighbors, not letting our kids walk to school,or play outside, that nowadays, the kids are either in a car or in the backyard, and they don't get to know the neighborhood. In fact, the world has become safer. We have the technologies to keep track of almost everything our kids do.And so you think you must control them, and you think your child is something that has to be tracked like a package.
The famous case for many parents was the Etan Patz case in New York in 1979.Patz's parents gave him permission for the first time to walk to the bus stop nearby. He was killed. The story is so terrible that we remember it two generations later. And we don't allow our kids to walk alone because of one terrible thing that happened 39 years ago.But we don't say,“I want to drive you to the dentist, but what if we get in a car accident? Think of those people who died in a car accident 39 years ago.I don't want to be like them. No,we're not going.” And we recognize that it would be funny to think that way.
9.What do we know about Lenore Skenazy?
A.She used to have full control of her son.
B.She was in favor of Utah's previous law.
C.She suggests kids be allowed more freedom.
D.She was once punished for neglecting her son.
10.Which of the following is a reason why kids are kept at home nowadays?
A.People remain distant.
B.Kids dislike outdoor activities.
C.Parents know little about accidents.
D.The crime rate is slightly increasing.
根据第三段的We get so used to not knowing our neighbors...and they don't get to know the neighborhood可知,当今孩子常被留在家中的一个原因就是人与人之间关系的疏远。]
11.What's the author's attitude towards parents' act of keeping track of their kids?
A.Unclear. B.Supportive.
C.Indifferent. D.Unfavorable.
12.What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To prove accidents are like crimes.
B.To warn parents of a terrible crime.
C.To argue against some parents' worry.
D.To point out the real danger to children.
