When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn't a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn't you ever wonder what you're really like ? Well, you now have that girl's opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That's just for you,” he said.“You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will be of help to you.
Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don't shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece of advice.

    C. I was having more and more shortcomings as time went on.
    D. Week by week, my shortcomings grew more serious.

    (烟台理工学校2019—2020学年度第二学期期中)
Students perform less well in final exams if smart-phones are allowed in class, for non-academic (非学业的) purposes in lectures, a new study in Educational Psychology finds. Students who don’t use smart-phones themselves but attend lectures where their use is acceptable also do worse, suggesting that smart-phone use damages the group learning environment.
Researchers from Rutgers University in the US performed an in-class experiment to lest whether dividing attention between smart-phones and the lecturer during the class affected students’ performance in within-lecture tests and a final exam. 118 students at Rutgers University took part in the experiment during one term of their course. Smart-phones were not allowed in half of the lectures and allowed in the other half. When smart-phones were allowed, students were asked to record whether they had used them for non-academic purposes during the lecture.
The study found that having a smart-phone didn’t lower students’ scores in comprehension tests within lectures, but it did lower scores in the final exam by at least 5%, or half a grade. This finding shows for the first time that the main effect of divided attention in the classroom is on the length of time in keeping memory, with fewer things of a study task later remembered. In addition, when the use of smart-phones was allowed in class, performance was also poorer for students who did not use them as well as for those who did.
The study’s lead author, Professor Arnold Glass, added: “These findings should alarm students and teachers that dividing attention is having a not obvious but harmful effect that is damaging their exam performance and final grade. To help manage the use of smart-phones in the classroom, teachers should explain to students the alarming effect—not only for themselves, but for the whole class.”
This is the first-ever study in an actual classroom showing a relationship between losing attention from smart-phones and exam performance. However, more researches are required to see how students are affected by using smart-phones after school.
    9. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
    A. To present the main findings of the experiment.
    B. To explain how the experiment was carried out.
    C. To give details about the result of the experiment
    D. To suggest what should be done for teachers and students.

We all know the saying, “Nobody is perfect.” It has been planted in our brains since we were children, and of course, it is the truth. So if nobody is perfect, why do we have such a hard time admitting when we are in trouble or need help?
Like many other young people trying to get through their first year of college, I felt anxiety, and it had its grips on me pretty tight. It began getting in the way of my life, and I had to sit down and tell myself that my behavior was not healthy and there was a solution. Finally, I decided to turn to therapy(精神疗法).
Therapy. It has such a negative stigma (污名), but why? Does going to therapy mean that you are failing as a person or that you cannot fix your problems on your own? No. Going to therapy means that you are strong enough to recognize that something inside your head is not working correctly, and you are brave enough to try to fix it.
After a couple of weeks, many parts of my life became so much clearer. I began to understand that I, myself, am my worst enemy, which was pretty frightening. But, although frightened, I knew that it was only I who could guide me towards feeling better, and that was extremely empowering.
I have been guided towards a healthier mindset, one that is positive and powerful. I have been able to understand that no matter what happens in my life. I will always be okay.
A lot of people do not understand that it is normal to have negative feelings and sometimes to feel like we have lost control over certain parts of our lives. Seeing a therapist can greatly change your way of thinking about something if you keep your mind open and I am so thankful that I decided to go and do something for myself.
If you are in need of help, you can go to therapy and then everything will be okay.
    13. In the author’s opinion, going to therapy ________.
    A. means you are failing as a person
    B. you’re brave enough to solve your problems
    C. can make others think wrongly about you
    D. can be quite unnecessary and helpful
    【答案】B
【解析】细节查找题.根据第三段信息“Going to therapy means that you are strong enough to recognize that something inside your head is not working correctly, and you are brave enough to try to fix it.”可知B项正确。
14.After a couple of weeks, how did the author react?
    A. She became more positive and confident.
    B. She became too frightened of her own life.
    C. She became worried about her anxiety.
    D. She realized college was her worst enemy.
    【答案】A
【解析】细节查找题.根据第四段信息“although frightened, I knew that it was only I who could guide me towards feeling better, and that was extremely empowering”可知作者在做完治疗之后,感觉很好。故选A项。
15.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
    A. To tell us how to think positively.
    B. To show it is OK to be imperfect.
    C. To share her college life with us.
    D. To help us know better about therapy.
    【答案】D

    Dear Peter,
With swimming sweeping nationwide, a swimming club has been formed recently in our school. In light of your great passion about it, I’m writing to invite you to join it.
In order to enrich our campus life, the swimming club without doubt provides us with an opportunity to build up our strength and foster a healthy lifestyle. In addition, a diversity of water-based activities are held, ranging from routine practice to regularly-organized matches, which cultivate the sports spirit as well as sharpen swimming skills. Please sign up in Mr. Smith’s office before next Friday.

    (山东省滕州市第一中学2019-2020 高一月考)
A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes—even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors, “If John didn't have his head tied on, he would forget that too!” Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn't that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very, very absentminded.
One hot summer day, professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a threehour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor's wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
“Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town.”
“What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I'll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don't forget where you put it.”
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.
    注意:1.所续写短文词数应为150左右 2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已给出,不计入总词数;
    Paragraph1:
“What’s the matter now?” asked his wife.__________________________________
    ____________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph2:
Hearing the cry, out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out what had happened.参考范文
What is the matter now? asked his wife. “I just can’t remember why I come back and where I am supposed to be going on such a hot summer day”, replied the professor. However, the real reason was that he forgot where he had left his children. Sensing something wrong, Mrs. Smith didn't believe his words, because whenever he told a lie, he would blink his eyes usually quickly. “Tell me the truth,” ordered his wife. “As you told me, I didn’t forget the where I put the name of that town, but I forget the station where I left our children!" whispered the professor, his voice trembling. “What a bad memory!” shouted the wife.
Hearing the cry,out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out what had happened. A fight between the couple was about to start when the professor’s cell-phone began to ring. His friend, whose patience had worn thin, phoned to complain. The professor apologized, got into his car and drove away, leaving behind a bunch of people outside the house. Being afraid that he would make matters worse again, Mrs. Smith decided to follow his husband, who then called a taxi. By the time she caught up with her husband, the children were already back home safe and sound.
