    When yu pen a dictinary, yu ften cme acrss a lt f unfamiliarwrds. Yu might think this is a bit scary. But many f them are frmed using ther simpler wrds. This is called wrd frmatin.Wrds frmed by cmbining ther wrds are called cmpunds, fr example, ① (a friend that yu cntact by writing, traditinallyusing a pen) and ② (knwn by many peple).
    Prefixes and suffixes ften have fixed meanings. lf vu add un- r in- t awrd, the new wrd usually means the ppsite. Fr example, if smething isn't crrect it's ③ , and if smene isn't happy they're④ . Wrds with the suffixes -ment and -ness are ften nuns.Fr example, if smebdy has imprved a lt, they have made great⑤ .
    Sme nuns and adjectives can be used as verbs, r the ther way rund.When we calm smebdy dwn, they becme⑥ .     American and British English

    Tday, American English is in cmmn internatinal use. lt is different frm British English in several ways, mstly in spelling and vcabulary. Sme American spellings were created by Nah Webster, wh made ne f America‘s first dictinaries. He changed “-re” spellings t “-er”, which is why① is spelt ② in American English.
    The Americans and the British als use different wrds fr everyday things. Fr example, Americans talk abut putting ③ in their cars and driving alng the ④ ,whereas in the UK, peple put ⑤ in their cars and drive alng the ⑥ .Americans take the ⑦ t the tp flr f a building, but the British use the ⑧ .
