Universe started in the third grade when she and her father watched a bld mn — a ttal lunar eclipse (月食) — utside their Skkie huse. “It is just really cl hw the universe can change and hw smething like that happens,” Dbek said.
Nw a seventh grader at East Prairie Elementary Schl, Dbek recently wn the natinal Discvery Educatin Lckheed-Martin Beynd Challenge by designing a space statin fr traveling t Mars.
Dbek cmpeted by handing in a tw-minute vide where she presents her design.
“My design will nt nly ensure the safety f the astrnauts (宇航员) but als make sure their cmfrt is ut f this wrld,” she says in her vide.
Dbek’s design calls fr building the Mars Strage Statin t stre plentiful supplies. In the vide, Dbek explains hw her spacecraft (宇宙飞船) — the Adventurer — will land in a space statin. Dbek’s design includes physical activity fr the astrnauts. They can chse their exercise machines and virtual (虚拟的) reality envirnment. S they will be able t watch dwnladed shws and even see places n Earth such as their hmes.
Dbek said she began her prject by perfrming her research and then she cnstructed the design ver three weeks t a mnth, wrking n it whenever she culd, including n weekends.
When Andrea Smeetn, her teacher, saw the vide and her design befre they were sent, she said she had a feeling that she culd win. “I dn’t knw why but maybe it was the excitement and the detail in the prject,” Smeetn said. “I have taught fr a lng time and many f my students are gifted but this prject is just very creative and it gives hpe t a space prgram.”
Dbek and her parents traveled t Washingtn D.C. in April where they learned Dbek had wn. When she texted her teacher the happy results, Smeetn admitted that she cried.
“I want t tell ther kids t fllw their dreams,” Dbek said. “Whatever they want t d, they shuld kind f just push fr it. They shuld always try their best.”

The sample size was very small (48 peple), s we can't think everyne will respnd the same way. Thse 48 peple slept five hurs per night fr five nights straight. They gt a caffeine dse equal t a large cup f cffee arund 8 am and anther arund 12 pm each day. Fr the first tw days, the peple wh gt caffeine were perfrming better n attentin and reactin tests. But by the third day, the caffeine was n lnger helping them perfrm any better than the peple wh didn't get any caffeine.
Increasing the caffeine dse may have changed that. "But the mre caffeine yu cnsume, the mre negative side affects yu feel," Dty said. "This wrk ges alng with lts f ther wrk shwing that the negative effects f lacking sleep are difficult t vercme. This is true even with a heavy daily dse f caffeine.

“I culd nt mve at all,” says Starr, wh was stuck between the tilet and the tub. Starr was scared. “I’m thinking: I’m just ging t die here.” she says. Her best bet, she decided, was t listen fr the letter carrier in the afternn and scream at the tp f her lungs. Fr the next few hurs, Starr practiced yelling: “Help! Help! Help!”
