Thrugh years f research, develpment and testing, researchers in Shaanxi are explring the feasibility (可行性) f using a high-tech radar called the phased array radar (相控阵雷达) t prevent the theft f utdr relics. This radar can mnitr and track mving targets ver wide areas, ffering the prmise f enhanced relic security. Unlike traditinal methds, this radar wrks 24/7, prviding real-time mnitring and precise alerts regarding suspicius activities.
Cmpared t cnventinal mnitring technlgies, the phased array radar is much mre flexible and reliable. It prvides efficient mnitring, regardless f weather cnditins r lighting, thereby reducing the risk f nighttime thefts. “The device can detect vehicles within a range f 10 kilmeters and spt peple within 5 km, s large-scale mnitring can be achieved at a lw cst,” said Han Jianwu, deputy directr f the Shaanxi Institute fr the Preservatin f Cultural Heritage. “Mrever, it can simultaneusly capture and track 128 grups f targets and prvide their distance, speed, categry and trajectry (轨迹). All this reduces the chance f missing suspicius activities in the mnitred area.”
In the past, the absence f reliable security equipment resulted in numerus relic crimes. Over several mnths in 2019, five peple stle numerus priceless ancient relics in Jilin and Hebei, with ne being designated as first-class artifact. It wasn’t until mnths later that their activities were uncvered and they gt caught.
With the radar system, anyne wh breaks int the site will be identified immediately and trigger the alarm. The radar’s cmpact design, alng with its autnmus peratin and need fr very little upkeep, makes it a cst-effective slutin fr relic security. With nging testing and imprvement, this radar system shws real ptential as an early warning tl fr detecting cultural relic crimes.

Established earthquake warning systems prvide at best just a minute r tw f ntice, leaving little time fr preparedness. Decades f searching fr a better warning sign-changes in the gechemistry f grundwater, electrmagnetic effects in the upper atmsphere, and even changes in animal behavir-have failed. Many questin whether such a precursr (先兆) even exists. This situatin may change sn, as recent research is prviding a glimmer f hpe fr imprved earthquake predictin.
Researchers Quentin Bletery and Jean-Mathieu Ncquet frm Cte d’Azur University in France cllected data frm ver 90 earthquakes with magnitudes larger than 7 that had ccurred in the past tw decades. They fcused n GPS statin recrds near these quakes, which accurately captured land mvement every 5 minutes with millimeter precisin. They analyzed mre than 3,000 time series f mtin in the 48 hurs leading up t the main ruptures (断裂).
They nticed that, in the first 46 hurs, the recrds shwed n significant features. Hwever, during the 2 hurs befre the earthquake, they nticed signs f increasing mvement alng the fault znes (断层带). Essentially, there’s a slip between plates causing the land abve them t mve in a measurable, hrizntal directin.
Culd this be just a cincidence? The prbability f this increase happening just befre the quake and being unrelated is extremely lw, and the researchers cnfirmed this by analyzing 100,000 randm time windws in nn-earthquake GPS data. The pattern ccurred nly 0.03% f the time in nn-earthquake data.
While this precursr signal wn’t be used fr warnings anytime sn, fficials frm the United States Gelgical Survey (USGS) admit that this new study prvides valuable insights int hw t imprve their warning systems-GPS data can grease the wheels f early earthquake warnings.
The researchers admit they're still a number f steps away frm putting this precursr signal int use, particularly since detecting subtle signals at individual faults requires mre GPS statins. But the biggest prblem is that many f the wrld’s earthquake regins have n instrumentatin. “We can’t realize the detectin at the scale f ne earthquake, s we cannt make predictins,” Bletery said.
    12. What remains a tugh prblem fr scientists?
    A. Determining the magnitude f an earthquake.
    B. Finding a way t detect earthquakes in early stages.
    C. Measuring atmspheric changes during earthquakes.
    D. Identifying animals’ pssible respnses t earthquakes.
    13. What did the researchers find thrugh their data analysis?
    A. The chance f main ruptures ccurring in fault znes.
    B. The accuracy f GPS in recrding land mvement.
    C. The existence f a tw-hur precursry phase.
    D. The hrizntal slip within the first 46 hurs.
    14. What des the underlined part “grease the wheels f” in paragraph 5 mean?
    A. DistinguishB. Cntradict C. OvermatchD. Facilitate
    15. What hlds back the practical applicatin f the new findings?
    A. The inaccessibility f precursr signals.
    B. The cmplexity f updating GPS equipment.
    C. The challenge f identifying earthquake regins.
    D. The incnsistent slip patterns f different earthquakes.
    【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. A

    【15题详解】
细节理解题。 根据最后一段“The researchers admit they're still a number f steps away frm putting this precursr signal int use, particularly since detecting subtle signals at individual faults requires mre GPS statins. But the biggest prblem is that many f the wrld's earthquake regins have n instrumentatin. “We can't realize the detectin at the scale f ne earthquake, s we cannt make predictins,” Bletery said. (研究人员承认,他们距离将这种前兆信号投入使用还有很长的路要走,特别是因为在单个断层处检测细微信号需要更多的GPS站。但最大的问题是,世界上许多地震地区没有仪器。“我们无法在一次地震的规模上实现探测,所以我们无法做出预测,”布莱里说。)”由此可知因为很多地震地区没有仪器,所以我们很难监测前兆信号,也就是前兆信号的不可接近性阻碍了新发现的实际应用,故选A。
