William Gadury has been fascinated by the Mayans fr mst f his childhd, ever since his grandpa bught him bks frm Mexic abut the civilizatin. What started as a hbby at age 12 snwballed int serius research, and he thught that the lcatins f Mayan cities might match stars in Mayan cnstellatins (星座).
Using ancient bks, knwn as the MadridCdex, Gadury analyzed 22 Mayan cnstellatin maps and verlaid (覆盖) the psitins nt Ggle Earth images f the Yucatán Peninsula, which t this day is hme t large native ppulatins and sme f the bestpreserved architecture frm Mayan culture.
He wuld trace the cnstellatins frm Ggle Earth using transparent (透明的) sheets, verlaying them nt the psitin f Mayan cities n a paper map. The teen was able t shw that 117 Mayan cities matched up with the psitin f the stars, with the brightest stars representing bigger cities, such as Chichen Itza and Uxmal.
But when Gadury was wrking n the 23rd Mayan cnstellatin, he fund a disagreement: three stars, but nly tw ancient cities n Ggle Earth. The third star pinted t a lcatin that was n the MexicBelize brder. Hwever, the area was cvered with thick jungle, leaving Gadury puzzled.
Luckily, the teen had wn a science cmpetitin with the Canadian Space Agency, and he was able t ask the agency fr images frm their satellite and eventually inferred that there was indeed a city there.
Gadury's findings eventually tk him int the jungle t search n ft, alng with archaelgist Francisc EstradaBelli. The team discvered a farming settlement deep in the Mexican jungle, which shwed the “backbne” f the Maya's lngterm success.
“What I admired mst abut Gadury was his curisity,” Kathryn ReeseTaylr, Prfessr f Archaelgy, said. “I think that he shwed a lt f curisity as well as imaginatin. And I think imaginatin is really imprtant in science, because if yu can't imagine it r if yu can't think f it, yu can't lk fr it.”
