    My Year Abroad
This month in Travellers Corner there are three teenagers’ experiences in year-abroad programmes.
    Mariko Okada—Tokyo
My year abroad in the United States was a fantastic experience. I’m not a shy person, and I was very comfortable speaking to everyone. So I got lots of speaking practice. I also learned lots of interesting things about American culture. When I got home, my friends all said that I had improved so much! I hope to go back again in the future.
    Carla Fonseca—Rio de Janeiro
I spent last year studying English in London. I’m from a small town, and London is a very big city. Sometimes I felt it was too big. There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family, and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think it was a good experience for me, but I’m glad to be home!
    Alvin Chen—Hong Kong
Studying in New Zealand was an interesting experience for me, but it was also lots of hard work! I had English classes six hours a day, five days a week—with lots of homework. I also kept a diary of my experience. I like to write, and I wrote two or three pages in my diary every day. On Saturdays, my homestay family took me to lots of interesting places and showed me so many wonderful things about the culture. I’m really glad I went!

I travel a lot in my work, and what I dislike about my job is eating alone. It always makes me feel lonely to see others laughing and talking. So, room service for several nights was a better choice for me.
After having room service three nights at a hotel in Houston, however, I needed to get out of my room. Although the restaurant opened at 6:30 a.m., I arrived at 6:25 a.m. The waiter at the front desk made a comment about my “being there really early”. I explained my dislike of eating alone in restaurants. He then seated me at a lovely table and asked me whether I would mind if he sat down with me for a while.
I was glad! He sat and talked with me about his career goals and the difficulty of being at work on nights, weekends and holidays. He said he didn’t have enough time to be with his family. After 15 minutes, he saw some customers at the front desk and excused himself. I noticed that before he went to the front desk, he stopped in the kitchen for a moment.
Then another waiter came out of the kitchen and had a wonderful chat with me. Before I left that night, some other waiters, even the cook, had come out of the kitchen and sat with me!
When I asked for my bill about one hour later, all the people who had sat down with me came over in a big group to my table, and presented me with a red rose. And I cried! What had begun as a lonely night ended as a beautiful experience.
    24. Why did the author ask for room service?
    A. A lot of money would be saved in this way.
    B. He didn’t like to eat with other people around.
    C. He didn’t want to be recognised by the waiters.
    D. Seeing people laughing and talking made him feel bad.
根据文章第一段第二句“It always makes me feel lonely to see others laughing and talking.”可知选D。
    答案:D
    25. How did the waiter feel when he saw the author come in at 6:25 a.m.?
    A. Dissatisfied. B. Pleased.
    C. Surprised. D. Angry.
    26. What can we learn about the waiter at the front desk from the third paragraph?
    A. He knew how to attract more customers to his restaurant.
    B. He found it hard to balance his work and his family.
    C. He was getting tired of his present job.
    D. He had never had such a chance to talk about his worries.
根据文章第三段中“He sat and talked with me about his career goals and the difficulty of being at work on nights, weekends and holidays. He said he didn’t have enough time to be with his family.”
    27. What does the author want to tell us?
    A. People are actually all lonely in their own way.
    B. Restaurants should put the need of customers first.

When school started on that warm August day, I threw myself into everything I did, including playing volleyball. I decided to become beautiful, or at the very least, skinny. I stopped eating completely. Soon I began losing weight, which thrilled me, and I even grew to love the tiredness and lightheadedness(头晕目眩) that came with my poor diet, for those feelings meant that I was winning.
As the season progressed, things had become tense between my head volleyball coach, Coach Smith, and me. She felt that something was wrong with my health. She talked with me about my eating and was angry that I wouldn’t listen to her when she tried to make me eat. She tried to persuade me in a determined way and so we fought constantly. Then my hunger started to affect my performance. I was so tired that practice and games were becoming a struggle. One afternoon, with hurt in her eyes, Coach Smith asked me what I had eaten and I told her nothing yet. She looked at me, disappointment in her eyes, knowing she couldn’t make me stop, and walked away.
A couple of weeks later I attended a formal dinner for our volleyball team. I stood there as my coach managed to say something nice about me. I realised then that I had ruined my senior year by being disrespectful, and I had probably ruined hers as well. So that evening I wrote her a letter apologising and thanking her.
Then one Saturday, as I was reading in the library, I felt someone gently take my arm and say softly, “Lynn Jones, how are you doing?” I looked up and saw the familiar face. “Thanks for the letter,” she said. “It meant a lot.”
When I think of a coach, I think of someone above me, someone who gives instruction—not a friend. But Coach Smith is different, and, like any other good friend, she dealt with my problem in a determined way even when I hated her for it at that time. I didn’t deserve her kindness, but she gave it anyway. I will forever be grateful for her help, and now for her friendship.
    28. How did the author feel when she had a poor diet and had a sense of tiredness?
    A. Funny. B. Nervous.
    C. Proud. D. Ashamed.
根据第一段“Soon I began losing weight, which thrilled me, and I even grew to love the tiredness and lightheadedness that came with my poor diet, for those feelings meant that I was winning.”
    29. Why did the author fight with Coach Smith?
    A. She refused to go on a diet.
    B. She caused failure of her team.
    C. She kept her idea of losing weight.
    D. She changed the training course.
根据第二段“She talked with me about my eating and was angry that I wouldn’t listen to her when she tried to make me eat. She tried to persuade me in a determined way and so we fought constantly.”
    30. Why did the author write a letter to Coach Smith?
    A. She felt sorry for eating too little food.
    B. She was grateful for Smith’s care for her health.
    C. She decided to improve her performance.
    D. She wanted to build a close relationship with Smith.
根据第三段“I realised then that I had ruined my senior year by being disrespectful, and I had probably ruined hers as well. So that evening I wrote her a letter apologising and thanking her.”
    31. What is a suitable title for the text?
    A. My Way of Losing Weight
    B. A Fight with My Coach
    C. A Strict Volleyball Coach
    D. Unexpected Friendship
最后一段中的“I will forever be grateful for her help, and now for her friendship.”
    D
If you’re planning to travel overseas, the most common form of transportation is by airplane. Knowing the whole procedure(程序) from buying plane tickets to dealing with in-flight emergencies(紧急事件) can ensure that you have a pleasurable trip.
First of all, choosing an airline carrier might depend on a number of factors including the company’s service record, price of the ticket, length of time to the destination, and even in-flight service.
Now, once you’ve bought your ticket, you still need to make the long journey through the airport. Once you arrive, you usually check your bags at the main ticket counter. Then, you have to pass through the security checkpoint, where you will have to walk through an X-ray machine, and they will check your carry-on bags for any forbidden items, including firearms, explosives, and knives. Of course, this is for everyone’s safety. You might also be asked to open your bags to be carefully checked.
Once you pass through this checkpoint, then you will go to the appointed boarding area and gate to wait for your plane. Just wait there until they say that your flight is here for you to go boarding.
Of course, once you are aboard the plane, no one ever wants to experience any emergencies, but the plane is equipped with emergency exits in case you have to leave the plane. There are also life jackets under the seats, and oxygen masks in case the plane’s cabin(机舱) unexpectedly loses pressure. Be sure to read the safety instruction card located in the pocket of the seat in front of you.
    32. What is the first step for travelling by plane?

How to Plan a Holiday Trip
    36. Whether it’s to grandma’s house, a family reunion or simply a holiday getaway, these yearly road trips can often be the source of dread and stress. The thought of being trapped in the car with restless children or the possibility of car trouble along the way is enough to make anyone consider staying home. 37.
Plan out the route for your car trip. If you’re planning on driving to your holiday destination, a little planning can help make your trip easy and uneventful. 38. Remember, it’s likely that you won’t be the only person on the road during the holidays, and traffic is always a factor. Alternative routes or shortcuts can help reduce time spent in traffic jams and get you to your destination sooner. This information can also come in handy in case of road construction or other situations that might block your primary route.
    39. _______ Although travelling by air can be quick and convenient, it can also be much more expensive. Start planning your trip early to take advantage of advance purchase discounts and avoid sold out flights. Many airlines become extremely busy during the holidays so booking in advance can also help ensure that you get the flights that you want. High traffic destinations such as New York, Los Angeles or Atlanta can be extremely crowded during the holidays. If you have the option, consider booking your flight to a nearby airport and renting a car for the short drive to your destination.
Consider your luggage needs. If you’re travelling by car, the issue of luggage is only important with regard to the amount of room needed. Before you begin packing, think about how many people will be in your vehicle and how much room they will need to travel comfortably. This could affect the number of bags that you can take along. 40. Not only is the possibility of lost luggage an issue, but most airlines now charge extra for checked baggage.
For a family of four, carrying a few bags each could result in several hundred dollars’ worth of baggage fees during your trip. Try to pack as lightly as possible.

    A. As an alternative to driving or flying, check into the possibility of travelling by train.
    B. Plan your trip to avoid peak travel times.
    C. Luckily, with a little planning, these situations can be avoided.
    D. Book airline tickets.
    E. Each year, millions of people load up the family car and set out on a holiday trip.
    F. For travelling by air, the number of bags that you take is a much bigger concern.
    G. Consider your starting point and desired destination, and investigate several possible routes.

    答案:E
    40. 解析:根据前一句 “This could affect the number of bags that you can take along.”

    The Story of Atlanta
Atlanta was a Greek princess. She was very beautiful and could run faster than any man in Greece. But she was not allowed to run or win glory for herself in the Olympic Games. She was so angry that she said to her father that she would not marry anyone who could not run faster than her. Her father said that she must marry, so Atlanta made a bargain with him. She said to him, “These are my rules. When a man says he wants to marry me, I will run against him. If he cannot run as fast as me, he will be killed. No one will be pardoned.”
Many kings and princes wanted to marry Atlanta, but when they heard of her rules they knew it was hopeless. So many of them sadly went home, but others stayed to run the race. There was a man called Hippomenes who was amazed when he heard of Atlanta’s rules. “Why are these men so foolish?” he thought. “Why will they let themselves be killed because they cannot run as fast as this princess?” However, when he saw Atlanta come out of her house to run, Hippomenes changed his mind. “I will marry Atlanta—or die!” he said.
The race started and although the men ran very fast, Atlanta ran faster. As Hippomenes watched, he thought, “How can I run as fast as Atlanta?” He went to ask the Greek Goddess of Love for help. She promised to help him and gave him three golden apples. She said, “Throw an apple in front of Atlanta when she is running past. When she stops to pick it up, you will be able to run past her and win.”
    注意:
    (1)续写词数应为150左右;
    (2)请按如下格式作答。
Hippomenes took the apples and went to the king. He said, “I want to marry Atlanta.” The king was so sad to see another man die that he advised him to give up. But Hippomenes said,“I will marry her—or die!” So the race began. Hippomenes was waiting nervously when Atlanta came out. She thought, “I don’t want this man to be killed!” So she said to her father, “Tell him to go home. The race is cancelled today.” However, Hippomenes insisted on running, and added, “This is the rule: She will marry whoever runs faster than her!”
When the race began, Atlanta ran past him. Thinking of what the Goddess of Love had said, Hippomenes threw the golden apples one after another in front of her. Surprised to see the attractive golden apples, Atlanta stopped to pick them up. Meanwhile, Hippomenes ran past her as fast as he could. Finally, to everyone’s surprise, he won. As a result, Atlanta married him and they lived happily ever after.
