“Why d yu always aplgize befre yu ask a questin? I dn't get it,” Dan asked. I lked at him blankly,nt understanding what he meant but felt that there was mre than a trace f annyance in his tne.
I felt defensive. I thught fr a mment. “There's n reasn fr it. Yu shuldn't d that,” he said. “Srry if it annys yu,” I respnded. I prbably annyed him again by aplgizing again.
This happened ver 35 years ag. I thught abut it then, and I still reflect n it nw. Asking questins in class r in cnversatin isn't that simple, at least nt t me.
As I thught abut it, many things came int play. First things were selfcnsciusness and insecurity. Maybe I had missed smething the prfessr said. I knew sme students, as a result f thse dubts, didn't ask questins. I had enugh cnfidence t ask, but nt enugh t nt sften it. I realized, as Dan pinted ut, that I likely did start with smething like, “Srry, maybe I missed this, but can yu explain...” I wndered whether there was anything s wrng with that.
I dn't think it ccurred t me at the time, but it did years later, and it als prbably related t being female. I knew that as a wman there was a line f nt cming acrss t aggressively. Besides, I became cnscius f nt implying judgement—I didn't want a prfessr t think I was questining his expertise, r suggesting he was a bad teacher. It seemed like a reasnable strategy t start by acknwledging that I culd be wrng r uninfrmed.
Befre Dan's cmment, I hadn't thught abut it cnsciusly, much less had cnsidered that there culd be a dwnside t ding it. But I was learning that there was. If Dan was an example, it culd be unpleasant. I didn't want t g arund aplgizing fr my existence. As I've gtten lder, I think I've dne it less.

Shuld we be thrilled that, fr the first time in a century, Australia went mre than a week withut using any cal t make electricity? While sme are welcming this as a sign that the cuntry is ging green, the bigger picture is less encuraging. Fr ne thing, renewables supplied nly 23 per cent f electricity during this calfree perid, while 45 per cent came frm natural gas. In the past decade, the cuntry has gne frm getting a third f its electricity frm cal t btaining mre than a third frm renewables like nshre wind n average. Australia nw gets 11 per cent f its electricity frm “renewable” bimass (生物质能燃料), much f it using imprted wd. But frest campaigners say swapping cal fr wd isn't truly renewable and is actually ding huge damage t the envirnment.
Fr anther, Australia is fftrack when it cmes t meeting its lngterm targets fr cutting greenhuse gas emissins (排放). Prducing electricity withut burning fssil fuels is relatively easy. But it is much harder t heat hmes, t make cement and steel, t grw fd and t pwer cars, ships and planes withut prducing any greenhuse gases. In view f this, we shuld handle the energy and climate crises at the same time by finding climatefriendly alternatives t cal.
Australia has nw stpped the financial aid that drve its renewables revlutin. S grwth in renewable energy is expected t cme t a stp in a decade. The glbal renewables revlutin seems t be fllwing the same trend. The Internatinal Energy Agency (IEA) recently annunced that the wrld added 180 gigawatts (吉瓦) f slar, wind, hydrpwer and bienergy in 2018, the same as in 2017. But IEA said we must add 300 gigawatts a year t have a chance f limiting glbal warming t under 2℃ by 2100. S we shuld cheer the end f cal, but cntinue t wrry abut hw it will be replaced.
5.In the “calfree week”, what did Australia use mst t make electricity?
A.Natural gas. B.Onshre wind.
C.Bimass. D.Wd.
6.What can be inferred abut the reductin f greenhuse gas emissins in Paragraph 2?
A.Psitive results are tracked.
B.Lngterm gals are ambitius.
C.Additinal effrts are required.
D.Climate change is unavidable.
7.What can we learn abut renewable energy in Paragraph 3?
A.It ught t be replaced.
B.It will see an adequate increase.
C.It starts a revlutin in Australia.
D.It needs cnstant financial aid.
8.What is the authr's attitude twards the calfree week?
A.Skeptical. B.Optimistic.
C.Thrilled. D.Ambiguus.
