During the plar summer f 1910 — 1911, bth teams rganised fd bases in preparatin fr their jurneys the next year. Then came the ttal darkness f the plar winter. Sctt and Amundsen waited anxiusly fr spring.
Amundsen was the first t leave n 8 September, 1911. He had teams f dgs pulling the sledges and all his men were n skis. Because f this, he made rapid prgress. Sctt left n 1 Nvember and sn had prblems. First, his tw sledges brke dwn and then the hrses began t have serius difficulties with the snw and the cld. After a while, Sctt and his men had t push the sledges themselves.
Amundsen reached the Ple n 14 December, 1911 and put a Nrwegian flag there. Then he prepared fr the return jurney. Amundsen and his team arrived safely back t their starting base n 25 January, 1912, ten days ahead f their planned schedule.
Sctt finally arrived at the Ple with fur team members n 17 January, 1912. They were shcked when they saw the Nrwegian flag. Sctt wrte in his diary: “Well, we have nw lst the gal f ur ambitin and must face 800 miles f hard pushing — and gdbye t mst f ur dreams.”
The return jurney was ne f the wrst in the histry f explratin. The men were sn very tired and were running ut f fd. The weather cnditins were terrible. Sctt started t realise their hpeless situatin:“We are very cheerful, but what each man feels in his heart I can nly guess. Putting n ur shes in the mrning is getting slwer and slwer.”

Then disaster came. Edgar Evans had a terrible disease and died after a bad fall. The next t g was Captain Oates, wh was having great difficulty walking. Sctt recrded his death:“He said, ‘I am just ging utside and may be sme time.’... We knew that pr Oates was walking t his death, but thugh we tried t stp him, we knew that it was the act f a brave man and an English gentleman. We all hpe t meet the end with a similar spirit, and certainly the end is nt far.”
Sctt and tw f his team members carried n and gt within eleven miles f ne f their fd bases. But then a terrible strm started and they culd nt leave their tent. Sctt spent sme f his last hurs writing. He wrte a letter full f sadness t his wife Kathleen:“I culd tell yu lts and lts abut this jurney. What stries yu wuld have fr the by ... but what a price t pay.”
Sctt’s diary als tld the stry f their end:“We are getting weaker and weaker and the end can’t be far. It seems a pity, but I d nt think I can write mre.”
The news f Sctt’s death shcked the wrld. Even Amundsen was mved by Sctt’s death saying “Captain Sctt left a recrd, fr hnesty, sincerity, fr bravery, fr everything that makes a man”. Sctt had failed t win the race t the Ple, but the great curage shwn by Sctt and his men made them heres.
