A new study by Chinese researchers has found differences in the brain activities of men and women addicted to Internet gaming.

The study says addicted men have lower impulse (冲动) control compared with women, indicating that men are more likely to become addicted to Internet gaming.

Researchers from Renji Hospital, which is connected with Shanghai Jiaotong University, recruited 105 Chinese participants for the study, which had two groups—one with 32 men and 23 women addicted to gaming, and the other with 30 men and 20 women who were not addicted.

They completed a questionnaire on gaming addiction, and reported their gaming history and number of hours playing per week. Researchers also talked with their families to collect the information.

Through FMRI scanning(功能性磁共振扫描), researchers found that men addicted to gaming had lower brain activities in the brain regions associated with impulse control, than nonaddicted men. The lower the activity levels, the poorer the impulse control. Addicted women, however, showed no differences compared with the healthy female group.

Researchers also studied the functional connectivity between brain regions, which were lower in men with addiction than in nonaddicted men, but showed no differences in the female groups.

Although there are some limitations, the findings suggest that activity levels displayed in the brain regions could be biomarkers to evaluate the behavioural inhibitions of gaming-addicted men, they said.

Gaming disorder was listed as a mental disorder by the World Health Organization earlier this year. People with the disorder have impaired control over gaming and give it increased priority in their lives—to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities.

    4. What did researchers find by FMRI scanning?

    A. Addicted men have higher brain activities.

    B. Addicted women have lower impulse control.

    C. Addicted men are the same as nonaddicted ones.

    D. Addicted women have no differences with nonaddicted ones.

解析:细节理解题。由文章倒数第四段“Addicted women, however, showed no differences compared with the healthy female group.”可知,通过功能性磁共振扫描,研究人员发现,上瘾的女性和没有上瘾的女性没有区别,故选D。

    答案:D

    5. What can we learn from the text?

    A. Researchers from Renji Hospital did the research independently.

    B. 53 men took part in the research.

    C. Gaming disorder does harm to our lives.

    D. The research has solved the problem completely.

解析:推理判断题。由最后一段“Gaming disorder was listed as a mental disorder by the World Health Organisation earlier this year.”(今年早些时候,世界卫生组织将游戏成瘾列为精神病。)可推断出游戏成瘾对我们的生活有害,故选C。

    答案:C

    6. What is the main purpose of the text?

    A. To explain the best way of getting rid of the Internet gaming addiction.

    B. To show the latest brain research on differences between addicted men and women.

    C. To describe Internet gaming’s harmful effects on men and women.

    D. To advise on the special use of Internet gaming to men and women.

To stop more teenagers from becoming addicted to the Internet, the Ministry of Education(MOE, 教育部) sent a letter to all parents in China. It calls on them to pay more attention to their children’s online activities. Nowadays more and more teenagers become addicted to the Internet. A 17-year-old boy from Guangdong Province nearly died after playing online games for 40 hours. It shows how bad things can get when one becomes addicted to the Internet.

The MOE also sent a notice to primary and middle schools, asking them to manage students’ Internet use. From now on, schools will pay more attention to their students’ Internet use, as well as their use of mobile phones. Schools have been told to teach students how to avoid violent online contents. As long as students show signs of being addicted to the Internet, they can get help from their teachers to give up their addiction.

To make better use of the Internet, experts suggest that students should limit their screen time to less than 1.5 hours a day. They can develop healthy hobbies, like reading or playing sports in their free time.

Many other countries are also taking action. The Australian government has called for schools to confiscate(没收) mobile phones during school hours. And in Korea, there is a law that children under the age of 16 are not allowed to play online between midnight and 6 am.

    Ⅳ. 阅读理解

When a 14-year-old boy from Atlanta, Georgia disappeared earlier this year, his mother turned to her smartphone for clues using an app called Family Tracker that helped track his location. It is one of several apps that allow parents to track where their children are.

“You can see where your loved ones are without having to call or bother them,” said Roberto Franceschetti of LogSat, the creators of Family Tracker, which has more than 100,000 users worldwide.

Parents can track the location of their child on a map and send messages. Parents don’t need to own a smartphone to track their children. The service can also be accessible on the web, as long as the phone that is being tracked is running the app.

Family Tracker has an additional service that keeps all data made by the app for a two-week period, which the company calls BDS breadcrumbs(面包屑). The service was used to find the missing boy in Atlanta.

“With a subscription(订阅), we keep all the locations where people have been on our servers. You can see where your kid has been for the past two weeks. You can find out where someone was at a certain time, or when that person was at a specific place,” Franceschetti explained.

“When somebody gets kidnapped(绑架), usually whoever does this throws the phone away or takes the battery out.
