Communities change in all sorts of ways over time.My few trips to my hometown over the years have given me an idea of the long-term influence on a community when the population falls even while wealth rises.
I come from one of the beautiful seaside towns that dot the Jersey Shore just seventy-five miles south of New York City. When I was young, these were lively and busy communities filled year-round with residents(居民) and full of tourists all summer.
Today,I notice one big change since my childhood:no people. No children playing around,no traffic in the streets and no customers looking through the storefronts. The big beautiful Victorian homes that housed families with five or more children and grandparents now sit quiet. The line of old bicycles in the drive has been replaced by luxury(豪华的) cars from other states.
Few who grew up here can afford to live in their parents' homes today.Over time, the beauty of the place along with its perfect location turned a middle-class,family-centred neighbourhood into a collection of vacation homes for the rich. The town is too expensive for the “locals” and too far from the City for workers.
It is not bad—just different.
Unless of course you own a small business that was built to serve a large year-round population.Small hardware stores, clothes shops, gift shops and independent cafes have been replaced by law offices and businesses dealing with houses and land. The hospitality(招待) industry, which includes my parents' business,is having a hard time as there just aren't enough customers between September and June. The land is worth more than the business itself, waiting for condo(公寓) developers.
Rising land and house values in Oak Park make me think of my family's experience on the Jersey Shore.A community is more than a place—it is the people who live there.Who will live in Oak Park in thirty years?Just wondering.
8.How was the author's hometown when he was a child?

It is generally accepted these days that reading a book will help you relieve stress. And it may actually make you a more thoughtful person as you learn to connect with the various characters. But there's more.A new study discovered that reading more than 3.5 hours per week actually increased a person's lifespan by 23 percent—about 12 years for the people involved in the study.
The study was led by a group of researchers at Yale University. It looked at 3,635 people, both men and women but all older than 50.The researchers divided them into three categories:those who didn't read books;those who read up to 3.5 hours a week;those who read more than 3.5 hours a week.
After the researchers adjusted for factors like education, health and income, the data showed that,on average, those who read about 3.5 hours a week were 17 percent less likely to die.
In addition, the study examined people who read newspapers and magazines and found that they were 11 percent less likely to die than non-readers,but only if they spent more than seven hours reading each week. That may be due to the different forms of these items. When people read newspapers or magazines, they tend to skim the material rather than read it fully.Avni Bavishi, the study's leader, said,“We believe people need to know, learn and understand more things when they are reading books, because there are more characters, more plots to follow, and more connections to make.”
The authors concluded that with a healthy diet and exercise, books appeared to promote a “significant survival advantage”.
Clearly, there is a need for more study. We're certain that book lovers all around the world will be glad to provide the data needed to make further conclusions.
12.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.A few people think that reading can help them relax.

答案A
解析细节理解题。根据第二段中的“ThestudywasledbyagroupofresearchersatYaleUniversity.Itlookedat3,635people,bothmenandwomenbutallolderthan50.”可知,选A项。

“Congratulations, man!” exclaimed my buddy Alex when he greeted me at my locker.“Today's the big day, right?”
“Yeah!” I said, giving him a huge grin.“I've been waiting forever for this!”
I pushed my books into the locker and grabbed my racket and ran away.I sprinted toward the tennis court, because I was confident that in a few minutes I'd be wearing a dark red varsity jersey to become a member of the team I have been dreaming to join.
When I got to the court,Coach Webber was in the middle of the big announcement.
“Three new guys will be joining the team this year,” he said.He threw the first jersey to Jack and the next to Rick.I held my hands in the air,all set to grab my own jersey as it sailed through the air.But I watched as the last jersey finally landed in Dylan's hands.
What just happened?I thought, completely confused.Coach Webber had promised that he'd put me up.Had he forgotten? Was he mad at me?
Just then Coach Webber came up to me.
“Sorry,Josh,” he said, lowering his voice.“But I really think it will serve you and the other players better if you remain on the JV team for another year.” And with that,he walked away.
That afternoon when I got home from school,I threw my racket across the yard and screamed,“It's so unfair!”
Then I complained to Mum,who ran out to see what was wrong.
“Coach didn't tell me why he changed his mind!” I said through clenched teeth.“His excuse was so lame!”
“I don't blame you for being so upset, but try to look at the situation from the coach's perspective,” Mum suggested.“He wants what's best for the team, right?Maybe he sees something you can't.”
“Like what?” I asked.I was angry, because Mum seemed to be siding with my coach.“I'm so much better this year! And I did everything he asked me to.That's not fair!Forget it.I'm sick of this.Tomorrow I'm quitting!”
Idroppedtotheground,feelingcompletelydefeated.
Ithought,maybeMumwasright.
参考范文
Idroppedtotheground, feelingcompletelydefeated.I thought to myself,“Why can't they support me?Can't they see my progress?Although I've tried so hard,I still can't get recognition.”The next day the Coach announced that we were going to play a game.I was absent-minded,missed several balls, and felt unbalanced in my heart,so I always bumped into the players, which made everyone very unhappy.
Ithought, maybeMumwasright. My performance today spoke for itself.I was impetuous. So I went to Coach Webber and apologised for today's performance and he said to me,“I'm not letting you join the team not because you're not a good player. You're not mature enough to withstand setbacks.I'm glad you understand that now.” After that,I spent a peaceful year on the JV team, honing my personality. Finally,a year later,I joined the team as I wished and became one of the best players.
