Befre Beck's design, early maps were usually drawn t a gegraphically accurate scale (比例). Map designers simply placed the subway lines n standard maps f the city streets. These maps clearly shwed the subway lines that reached the areas utside the centre f Lndn, but they made it difficult t make ut the busy lines that jined directly under central Lndn.
In the 1930s, Beck came up with a slutin that wuld nt take the gegraphical accuracy int accunt. He created a map that was a scaleddwn linear diagram f the subway lines. Mre a basic utline f the lines than a truetlife map, it didn't tell travelers abut hw far it actually was between tw pints. Beck's map had a clean structure with clured lines. His idea was t create the plainest guide t shw travelers hw t get frm ne statin t anther.
It's nt clear what inspired him t start the prject; he wasn't asked t d it, but likely develped his design in his free time, while between jbs. It was mre a presentatin f his being inventive, in seeing a prblem and cming up with an answer t it, than a respnse t public demand.
His design was then presented t the Lndn Passenger Transprt Bard, whse members refused t accept it, feeling that nt shwing relative distances between statins was silly and unreasnable. Still, after a time, in rder t increase subway ridership and therefre earn mre mney, the Bard decided t print a limited number f cpies. Gradually, Beck's map became a huge success.
Fr mst f his life, Beck cntinued t make small imprvements t the diagram, but he kept its basic designs and ideas. His clear diagrammatic methd f mapping has been generally accepted and fllwed in the field f infrmatin design nt nly in Lndn but als arund the wrld.

[2023·成都市高三摸底测试]It's ne f the ultimate tests f willpwer: yu've been wandering arund the market fr hurs and yu're tired and hungry. Then yu catch a smell f smething fragrant (香的) and delicius, prbably fried and almst certainly fattening. Junk fd cmpanies are well aware that the smell f their prduct sets ff a desire in yur brain and that yu'll pay fr that later. It is a respnse that has been researched, and yu'd better believe yur favrite fastfd chains have marketing teams that are using that research t their advantage.
Let's take a clser lk at this prcess. Have yu ever nticed that whatever indulgent fd (放纵型食品) catches yur attentin tends t be mst appealing just after yu first smell it? A cuple f minutes later yu are standing in line, and it isn't quite as appealing as it was just mments ag, but nw yu've invested time, s yu trust yur first feeling t treat yurself.
But a recent statement says that this is actually the right mment t walk away. Dipayan Biswas, a marketing prfessr, fund there is a direct cnnectin between hw lng a persn is expsed t indulgent fd smells and chsing healthier fds. “The results f a series f experiments shw that extended expsure f mre than tw minutes t junk fd smells leads t fewer purchases f unhealthy fds cmpared with n smell r a nnjunkfdrelated smell,” reads the summary f his study.
What appears t be ging n here is that the brain desn't necessarily distinguish between a pleasurable smell and a pleasant taste. “Extended expsure t an indulgent fd smell brings pleasure in the mind, which in turn reduces the desire fr actual cnsumptin f indulgent fds,” he explains. S next time yu feel yu dn't have the willpwer t resist ckies, smell all that sweetness fr just a minute r tw. T yur brain it's the same as actually eating ckies, and the purchase desire wuld decrease.
8.What can we learn abut junk fd smells frm the first paragraph?
A.They hardly affect peple's fd chices.
B.They can make a difference in marketing.
C.They are unlikely t fl wise custmers.

C.A cmparisn. D.A cmment.
10.Which statement will Biswas prbably agree with?
A.The influence f fd smells changes ver time.
B.The senses f taste and smell are clsely linked.
C.The behavir f smelling fd desn't equal eating it.
D.The brain can't tell where sensry pleasure is frm.
11.What is the best title fr the text?
A.Train yur brain t resist junk fd
B.Smells f junk fd can keep yu ff it
C.Watch ut fr tricky marketing tls

Frests absrb huge amunts f carbn dixide (CO2) frm Earth's atmsphere, which makes them a key part f easing climate change. But humans may have already made the wrld's largest rainfrest useless in—and perhaps even detrimental t—the battle against greenhuse gases, a new study finds.
Accrding t the study, the carbn balance f the Amazn rainfrest is damaged largely due t largescale (大规模的) human disturbance t the Amazn ecsystem, with wildfires—many deliberately set t clear land fr agriculture and industry—respnsible fr mst f the CO2 emissins (排放量) frm the regin and the htter dry seasns.
“The first very bad news is that frest burning prduces arund three times mre CO2 than the frest absrbs,” lead authr f the study Luciana Gatti said. “The secnd bad news is that the places where defrestatin is 30 percent r mre shw carbn emissins 10 times higher than the places where less than 20 percent f frest is destryed.”
In the new study, the researchers analyzed nearly 600 measurements f CO2 and CO cncentratin at fur spts in the Brazilian Amazn cllected frm 2010 t 2018. The team fund that, n average, fires pured abut 1.6 billin tns f CO2 int the atmsphere each year, while healthy trees absrbed nly abut half a billin tns. The team als fund that, while the Eastern Amazn, which has seen histrically greater amunts f defrestatin ver the past 40 years, has becme a place where carbn emissins are frm, the Western Amazn, which has seen much less defrestatin, is neither a carbn “prducer” nr a carbn sink. There, CO2 absrptin by healthy frests balances the emissins frm fires.
The Amazn Basin cntains abut 2.8 millin square miles f jungle, representing mre than half f the trpical (热带的) rainfrest area remaining n Earth. “Limiting defrestatin, and especially wildfires, is key t changing this dangerus trend in the Amazn. Imagine if we culd keep the Amazn frm fires, the frest culd be a carbn sink,” Gatti said. “But we are ding the ppsite—we are accelerating climate change.”
12.What des the underlined wrd “detrimental” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Harmful. B.Sensitive.
C.Respnsible. D.Ineffective.
13.Which is the majr cause f the Amazn's carbn imbalance?
A.Climate change.
B.Industrial develpment.
C.Human activity.
D.Natural wildfires.
14.What did the researchers discver in their study?
A.The Eastern Amazn is relatively betterpreserved.
B.The Amazn witnessed mre fires frm 2010 t 2018.
C.The majrity f frest fires resulted frm defrestatin.
D.The Amazn rainfrest creates mre CO2 than it absrbs.
15.What des Gatti imply at the end f the text?
A.Mre frests shuld have been prtected.
B.The Amazn rainfrest is shrinking rapidly.
C.Peple shuld greatly reduce their carbn ftprint.
D.Preventing fires helps imprve the Amazn's cnditin.
