Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous even though I had walked these same grounds for two years because my junior high school is next door. Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high.
I looked at my schedule. First period — German. Our German teacher was very friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn't like, though, was that I was surrounded by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces.
Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get to my second period — biology. Our teacher's name is Ms.Compeau, and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point. She also has her unique way of saying “be quiet,” she says “alligator.” She explained that she is the king, or should I say queen, of the class because alligators are the “king of the swamps (沼泽).”
My third class was English. After surviving two periods without too much of a challenge, I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything. Mr.V.,my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it was to be focused. Last year was not a very “focused” year for me. While doing homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy with a conversation on Facebook. I planned on stepping it up this year because I wanted to stay an honor student.
    4. What did the author mainly write about in this passage?
    A. Her new teachers. B. Her plan for the new year.
    C. Her first day of senior high. D. Her schedule for Wednesday.
    5. What should students do when Ms. Compeau says "alligator"?
    A. Sit still. B. Stop talking.
    C. Listen to the teacher. D. Look at the blackboard.
    6. How did the author find her first two classes?
    A. Unattractive. B. Informative. C. Very tiring. D. Pretty easy.
    7. Why did the author feel scared during the third period?
    A. Because she couldn't focus on her work.
    B. Because she found the class demanding.
    C. Because she didn't like the teacher.
    D. Because she did poorly at school.
C 5. B 6. D 7. B
(终于到了星期三!)”“Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high.(现在我上高中了,一切看起来和感觉起来都不一样了)”可知,本文主要讲述的是作者的第一天高中生活。
根据第三段倒数第二句“She also has her unique way of saying “be quiet,” she says “alligator.”(她也有自己独特的方式说“安静”,她说“鳄鱼”)”可知,当Compeau老师说“alligator”时,就表明她在要求大家安静,同学们就应该停止说话。
根据最后一段第二句“After surviving two periods without too much of a challenge, I began to feel good. (前两门课都没有太大挑战性,我感觉还不错)”可知,作者感觉前两门课不难。故选D。
    【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段第三句“Mr.V.,my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. (我的英语老师V先生告诉我们,今年我们要写40篇论文,还要读《奥德赛》等AP级书籍)”可知,作者担心这门课的原因是这门课的要求很高。故选B。

Video games sometimes have a bad name because they keep people indoors playing them instead of talking and playing with others face to face. However, a new study says that they might be good for young people’s brain development.
Scientists from the University of Vermont used data from the ABCD project, which is a study of brain development and health of children in the US as they move into adulthood. The results ware taken from 2,217 children aged nine or ten. They were divided into two groups. The first group never play video games while the second group play them for three or more hours a day.
The young people were set two tasks. The first one measured their reaction(反应) time by seeing how quickly they could press buttons that matched images on a screen. The second test tested their memory. They were show pictures of people’s faces and later were shown more and had to say if any of the faces were the same. During the tests, their brains were scanned with fMRI to measure brain activity.
The people who played video-games were better at the two tasks, and the fMRI scans showed that they show more brain activity in memory and attention. However, researchers don’t know if gaming improved their memory and reactions, or if they already had good memories and reactions and therefore enjoyed gaming.
The scientists hope to carry on studying the same young people as they get older to track the effects of gaming. The team could also find out in future if particular types of video games affect people’s brain activity differently.
The lead scientist on the study, Bader, said that too much screen time isn’t good for people’s mental or physical health. Although playing video games may get the brain more active than just going through videos on YouTube, it’s important to spend time outdoors in the fresh air, taking exercise and having fun with friends and family.
    8. What does the ABCD project do?
    A. It deals with adult brain development.
    B. It studies the development of young brains.
    C. It explores the harm of video games on teens.
    D. H focuses on the importance of communication.
    9. How did the first group perform compared with the second one?
    A. They showed fewer problems in memory.
    B. They already had better memory ability.
    C. They showed better ability in attention.
    D. They showed more attention problems.
    10. What do the researchers hope to do with the same young people?
    A. Track the effects of video games on them.
    B. Separate bad video games from good ones.
    C. Find ways to stop people from video games.
    D. Find a safe tine limit on playing the games.
    11. what can we infer from Bader’s words?
    A. The benefit of video games should be recognized.
    B. YouTube videos are less harmful than video games.
    C. There’re many better things to do than video games.
    D. The young should be taught to stay off video games.
B 9. D 10. A 11. C

根据第二段“Scientists from the University of Vermont used data from the ABCD project, which is a study of brain development and health of children in the US as they move into adulthood. (佛蒙特大学的科学家使用了ABCD项目的数据,该项目是一项关于美国儿童成年后大脑发育和健康的研究。)”可知,ABCD这个项目研究青少年成长为成年人的过程中大脑的发育情况。故选B。
    【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“The people who played video-games were better at the two tasks, and the fMRI scans showed that they show more brain activity in memory and attention. However, researchers don’t know if gaming improved their memory and reactions, or if they already had good memories and reactions and therefore enjoyed gaming.
根据第五段“The scientists hope to carry on studying the same young people as they get older to track the effects of gaming. The team could also find out in future if particular types of video games affect people’s brain activity differently. (科学家们希望随着年龄的增长,继续研究同样的年轻人,以追踪游戏的影响。该团队还可能在未来发现特定类型的电子游戏是否会对人们的大脑活动产生不同的影响。)”可知,研究人员打算继续研究这些年轻人,以追踪电脑游戏对他们的影响。故选A。
根据最后一段“The lead scientist on the study, Bader, said that too much screen time isn’t good for people’s mental or physical health. Although playing video games may get the brain more active than just going through videos on YouTube, it’s important to spend time outdoors in the fresh air, taking exercise and having fun with friends and family.
    D
Breakfast is food for the brain and for the rest of your body. And downing those morning calories is worth it, even for people worried about their weight, a new study finds.
The study was led by Marlene Schwartz, a psychologists (心理学家) who studies obesity (肥胖). Her group studied some 600 middle-school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools were asked about their breakfasts. Throughout the study about 34%-44% of all students said that they regularly ate breakfast at home. Up to 17%, or almost one in every six kids, regularly ate breakfast at school. Overall (总的来说), about one in every 10 kids reported eating breakfasts both at home and at school. Eating habits changed somewhat as the kids got older. For example, fifth graders were more likely to regularly eat breakfast at home. But by seventh grade, 22% of the studied kids often skipped breakfast.
Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less possible to be overweight. This was true even for those who ate breakfast at home and at school. It also found that students who skipped breakfast most often were those most likely to be overweight. These findings may seem puzzling. Yet Schwartz’s team can think of several possible explanations.
Skipping breakfast may set people to be “over-hungry” later in the day, she says. Then someone may eat more food than their body needs. What’s more, not eating regularly in the morning stops our brains and bodies from working properly. It’s very difficult for kids to stay concentrated in class without having breakfast.
But why should eating two breakfasts not lead to weight gain? One explanation may be that school breakfasts are very healthy and controlled in size. Also, most of the double-breakfast eaters are boys. These kids are so active and actively growing up that they need more calories. They often eat twice as much as other people.
    12. The example underlined in the second paragraph is meant to tell us ______.
    A. having breakfast is of no use at all
    B. skipping breakfast is rather harmful to kids’ health
    C. kids will change their eating habits as they grow older
    D. it is important to have breakfast regularly
    13. According to the passage, which one of the following statements is NOT true?
    A. The study was carried out among middle-school students.
    B. The study was going on for over three years.
    C. Skipping breakfast will possibly lead to weight gain.
    D. We can never eat too much in the morning.
    14. Based on the passage, what may happen to a boy who eats breakfast regularly?
    A. He may put on weight. B. His brain and body will work well and properly.
    C. He will be in perfect health. D. He will be absent-minded in class.
    15. What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
    A. Kids who are growing up more actively need more energy.
    B. All the kids should eat more to stay healthy.
    C. Eating two breakfasts will lead to weight gain.
    D. Schools must provide healthy breakfasts.
C 13. D 14. B 15. A
根据第二段中划线句子“For example, fifth graders were more likely to regularly eat breakfast at home. But by seventh grade, 22% of the studied kids often skipped breakfast. (例如,五年级学生更有可能经常在家吃早餐。但到了七年级,22%的被研究的孩子经常不吃早餐)”及“Eating habits changed somewhat as the kids got older. (随着孩子们年龄的增长,饮食习惯发生了一些变化)”可知,此处通过举例具体说明孩子们会随着年龄的增长而改变他们的饮食习惯。故选C项。
    【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Her group studied some 600 middle-school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools were asked about their breakfasts.(她的研究小组对大约600名中学生进行了研究。三年多来,来自12所不同学校的学生被问及他们的早餐)”及第三段中“It also found that students who skipped breakfast most often were those most likely to be overweight. (它还发现,最常不吃早餐的学生是那些最有可能超重的学生)”可知,她的研究是在中学中进行的,且进行了三年多,研究发现不吃早餐可能导致体重增加。D选项与原文内容不符。故选D项。
    【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段中“What’s more, not eating regularly in the morning stops our brains and bodies from working properly. It’s very difficult for kids to stay concentrated in class without having breakfast. (更重要的是,不经常吃早饭会使我们的大和身体无法正常工作。孩子们很难在不吃早餐的情况下专心上课)”可知,按时吃饭的孩子,大脑和身体会正常工作。故选B项。
    【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But why should eating two breakfasts not lead to weight gain? One explanation may be that school breakfasts are very healthy and controlled in size. Also, most of the double-breakfast eaters are boys. These kids are so active and actively growing up that they need more calories. They often eat twice as much as other people. (但是为什么吃两顿早餐不会导致体增加呢?一种解释可能是,学校的早餐非常健康,而且早餐的量受到控制。还有就是,大部分吃双份早餐的孩子是男孩。这些孩子活跃并且得快。他们经常吃别人的两倍)”可知,从最后一段我们可以推断出,活跃并且长得快的孩子吃的多,因为他们需要更多的能量。故选A项。

Yu Gong Removed the Moutains is one of the famous Chinese ancient tales. Once upon a time, a foolish old man called Yu Gong decided to move the two moutains into the sea, which stood in front of his house and blocked the way. Another wise old man laughed at him and thought it was impossible for him to make it. However, Yu Gong and his family carried on, day after day, year after year, through summer and winter. Until one day, God heard about it and was so moved by his determination that he sent his two sons to take the two mountains away.
From this story, we can learn that although Yu Gong’s behaviour seemed to be stupid, his determination and perseverance helped him to achieve the goal at last. Therefore, the story tells us that with determination, everything can be achieved. But in fact, the two mountains were moved away by God’s sons in the end, who did it easily. So in my opinion, choosing a right way is as important as determination and perseverance when we are facing difficulties.
