When recalling my high school Gonzaga College High School, I am excited. It was founded in 1821, which was in the center part of D. C., within the shouting distance of the Capitol building.
Seeing my older brother experience Gonzaga a few years before me, I had an idea of how special this school was before my entering to school. Through him, I could see the pride and friendship among Gonzaga students.
My true love for Gonzaga, however, began in my freshman year. I remember during my freshman guidance, the team spirit organization sat our class down on the playground and taught us all the game cheers. I remember feeling a sense of energy and pride among these students that I had never experienced from a high school before. I mean, it was just a high school—how much school pride could these kids really have? But it was not just a high school, and it only took a few football games for me to realize that I went to the most prideful school in the D. C.
I spent the rest of my first year meeting some of the coolest and most interesting people I have ever known. Some of the funniest, smartest and kindest guys I have ever met went to this school. No matter how athletic(擅长运动的) you were or how much money your parents had, you were just another Gonzaga kid. You were friends with everyone.
When my freshman life came to an end, I began to understand what it meant to be part of Gonzaga students. Serving the poor right there on Campus at the McKenna center, I got a view on poor people that I will value for the rest of my life. Through football I learned how to develop better self-control and built some of the greatest friendships. In the classroom, I had many laughs with friends and teachers alike. I also learned how to manage my time and gained a lot of information, but most importantly, I learned how to put the world and others before myself.
24. Why did the author consider Gonzaga College High School special before getting into it?
A. Because of its long history.
B. Because of its excellent location.
C. Because of his brother’s experiences there.
D. Because of its short distance from the Capitol building.
25. According to the text, the freshman guidance __________.
A. made students feel energetic and proud
B. led to the author’s love for football games
C. gave an introduction to the high school
D. helped the author find the pride and friendship
26. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To introduce the advantages of his high school.
B. To show he really learns a lot in his high school.
C. To state the importance of high school education.
D. To explain how sports activities make students athletic.
27. The passage mainly talks about __________.
A. how special my high school was
B. the memories of my loving high school
C. how proud I was of my efforts in high school
D. the challenges during my high school years
C
Facial recognition cameras are everywhere, including in your smartphone. Many people rely on this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or make quick payments, but there is a problem: Everyone is wearing masks. What a hassle!
Now, tech companies have updated their software. Facial recognition technology can now identify people even if they are wearing a mask.
Beijing-based tech company Hanwang has announced a software which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks, Engineering & Technology (E&T) reported. What’s the secret? It’s all about your eyes.
Marios Savvides, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition technology. “As we get older,” he said, “our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same—even if we put on weight.”
Another company has also been working on this kind of software. Tech5 has AI that measures the shape of your face. It also scans your iris (the colored part of your eyes). Tech5 hopes to ignore all of the face below the nose.
Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It’s about public safety. Touchless verification(验证) has become extremely important due to the COVID-19. More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime ( 犯 罪 ). “It can detect crime suspects,” said Huang Lei, Hanwang’s president. Hanwang’s technology is used by police in high-security settings. This means places like government buildings, subway stations and airports. Huang admits one big weakness of this new technology: It fails when people wear both masks and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost, but I believe we can overcome the weakness in the future,” said Huang.
28. What does the underlined word “hassle” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Habit. B. Trouble. C. Rule. D. Mistake.
29. What makes facial recognition software able to identify people wearing masks?
A. The face below the nose. B. The facial expression.
C. The changing shape of face. D. The character of eye region.
30. What is Huang Lei’s attitude towards the facial recognition software?
A. Worried. B. Positive. C. Curious. D. Doubtful.
31. What can be inferred about the new technology from the last paragraph?
A. There is room for improvement in it.
B. It cannot store key facial information.
C. It will lose popularity in the future.
D. It won’t work if people wear glasses.
D
“Snowplow(扫雪机) parenting” is the newest parenting style that can include parents booking their adult children haircuts, calling their college kids to wake them up so that they don’t sleep through a test, and even calling their kids’ employers.
“‘Helicopter(直升机) parenting’ means monitoring their kids’ every activity, which is out of date.” Claire Cain Miller and Jonah Engel Bromwich wrote in The New York Times. “Some rich mothers and fathers now are more like snowplows: clearing any problems in their children’s path to success so that they don’t have to meet failure or lose opportunities.”
There is a mother who started a charity in her son’s name to try to raise his chances of being accepted to the college. Another couple of parents spent years helping their daughter avoid foods with sauce, which she didn’t like. Once she got to college, she had problems with the food in her school because it was all covered in sauce.
A survey says that three-quarters of parents of children between the ages of 18 and 28 ask for doctor visits or haircuts for their children, and 11% say they would call their kids’ bosses whether their children are having an issue at work.
As reported, wealthy parents try to get their children into top colleges by giving a large amount of money to a school, such as paying for a building. This parenting has become the most popular way to raise children, whatever the income, education, or race is.
Julie, a teacher at Stanford, told the Times that “snowplow parenting” is not a reasonable approach. “The parents should prepare the kid for the road, instead of preparing the road for the kid,” she said.
32. According to paragraph 2, “helicopter parenting”________.
A. was once a popular parenting style B. clears problems for kids
C. encourages kids to care for themselves D. is preferred by more parents
33. In paragraph 3, the author tries to ________.
A. argue for the “snowplow parenting” style
B. give examples of “snowplow parenting”
C. explain the idea of “snowplow parenting”
D. offer some advice on “snowplow parenting”
34. What does Julie mean by her words in the last paragraph?
A. Parents should be prepared to deal with the problems their kids meet.
B. Parents should never do anything for their kids until problems turn up.
C. Kids should develop the ability to face challenges with the help of parents.
D. Kids should always be independent of their parents no matter what happens.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Clear the Way for Your Kids
B. Have Your Eye on Your Kids
C. “Helicopter Parenting”—The Same Old Story
D. “Snowplow Parenting”—The More Help, The Better?

When the leaves begin to change their colors and the birds head south, we know the season is starting to change. On September 7 comes White Dew(白露), the 15th solar term( 节 气 ) of the year. It means the beginning of the cool autumn. As the temperature falls, white dew is often seen on the grass and trees at night.
For writers and poets, autumn is a difficult season to describe. It’s the end of the summer, and therefore a little sad. The days seem to get shorter, and when you wake in the morning, there’s mist and it’s cooler. Winter is just around the corner.
American writer Ernest Hemingway wrote in his book A Moveable Feast, “You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintry light.”
But on the other hand, autumn has its good side. There are so many changes at this time of year, such as the colorful leaves and cooler nights. French writer Albert Camus even thought autumn was a second spring, “when every leaf is a flower.” This view is also found in the most famous autumn poem in English literature, To Autumn by John Keats. In that poem, Keats says that autumn has its own songs, just like spring.
Another theme of this season is wisdom. The arrival of autumn is thought to be similar to a person becoming mature(成熟的).
The great Irish poet W.B. Yeats writes about the changing seasons in Coole Park in the west of Ireland. Seeing and counting 59 swans, he remembers first making the count as a young man. Seeing the swans do the same thing for all those years, he’s reminded that even though we get older, our hearts always stay the same age. He used this idea in his poem The Wild Swans at Coole.
36. What can be concluded about White Dew?
A. It is often ignored by writers and poets.
B. It is the time of year with the most rainfall.
C. It is when the temperature begins to drop.
D. It indicates the end of the autumn.
37. A Moveable Feast was mentioned to ______.
A. point out that autumn is very cold
B. present the sad part of autumn
C. show that winter will soon come
D. express sadness about the end of life
38. What does the underlined phrase “this idea” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Autumn is an important season for man.
B. Autumn is related to one’s growing old.
C. We can always stay young at heart.
D. Nature is full of lessons to be learned.
39. What’s the article mainly about?
A. The solar term White Dew.
B. Why autumn is a sad season.
C. Autumn weather and activities.
D. Famous writers’ description of autumn.

参考范文:
Dear Li Mei,
Knowing that you are having some problems on English learning at the beginning of your high school, I would like to offer you some advice for reference.
According to my own experience, concentrating on every English lesson is the most important way to understand this language. While listening to the teachers, you should take some notes, which can help you review the lessons better. Meanwhile, make sure you can memorize the vocabulary well because words and expressions are the bases of English. It is also a good choice to enlarge your vocabulary by reading English newspapers. Last but not the least, practice makes perfect. Trying to communicate in English with someone more often can help you improve your English speaking faster. It is also beneficial for you to watch some English/US TV series or listen to some English songs in your spare time.
I hope my suggestions can help you go through this period. I believe that your English will be better soon! Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
