B
I was born in Monrovia, Liberia on March 13, 1977. In early 1990, a cruel civil war started in Liberia. The nation’s economic, political and social systems were destroyed. 250,000 people were killed and one million were displaced. More than 700,000 Liberians fled to neighboring countries to avoid the war. I am one of them.
Less fortunate refugees have been living in camps for more than 10 years. Children suffered the most damage; a high percentage of them were recruited as child soldiers—the boys were taken to fight.
I escaped to the bordering Ivory Coast after the death of my stepfather at the end of 1990. I watched the country go from peaceful and quiet to dangerous. In November 1993, I finally got to the United States and was reunited with my family. I received a full academic scholarship to college, where I obtained a degree in Electronic Communication. After graduating, I moved to Manhattan for my career in fashion. I never forgot how much suffering my fellow Liberians stood. To help those back home in Monrovia, I began donating to individuals, orphanages and women’s groups five years ago. Those efforts grew into The MacDella Cooper Foundation.
In 2004, I started The MacDella Cooper Foundation (MCF), an organization devoted to empowering Liberian youth, especially orphans and abandoned children, by providing education and basic necessities. My dream is to educate as many Liberian children as MCF can support, so that they can later contribute to the economic redevelopment of the country and to make sure Liberia’s history is not repeated. I believe that education is the saving grace of Liberia and Africa as a whole. But to promote education, we must first provide the basic needs—shelter, food, clothing and security.
In just a few short years, we have assisted foster homes and five orphanages in Monrovia. MCF has also reunited families and aided a young Liberian orphan needing medical treatment for cancer. Additionally, in December MCF holds an annual children’s Christmas party at the Susie Gunther Orphanage in Monrovia for more than 500 orphans. Each child receives a warm meal on Christmas day and a gift bag filled with toys and other necessities.
We’re very excited and honored to be part of the world community assisting in Liberia’s recovery. Our final goal is a strong, educated, and economically sound Liberia.
41.When the cruel civil war started in Liberia, the author ______.
A.stayed in a camp B.lived with all of her family
C.lived with her stepfather D.had decided to go for America

Nearly all parents want to raise confident children who believe strongly in their own abilities, but how exactly do you encourage your children to see themselves as intelligent and competent? Will calling your children “smart” help to improve confidence?
Research clearly shows that praising children for being “smart” is associated with more negative consequences than praising children for their effort. First, research finds that when children are praised for being “smart,” they tend to be less interested in the learning itself and more interested in the performance of themselves and others, as compared to children who are praised for their effort. In addition, when faced with failure, children praised for being “smart” tend to blame their failure on not being smart enough and are then more likely to just give up.
Children praised for “hard work” tend to conclude that they simply need to work harder when they fail, and thus they are more likely to be persistent. Children who are praised for being “smart” also tend to see intelligence as something they can’t change, while children praised for “hard work” are more motivated to keep learning or trying to do better.
Praising children for being “smart” may even promote cheating. Research finds that children who are referred to as “smart” are more likely to cheat than children praised for their performance (“You did very well this time.”), or not praised at all. The researchers guess that children who are called “smart” feel pressured to uphold this reputation so they cheat to make sure that their performance is consistent with being “smart”.
So try not to refer to your child as “smart” or any label that refers to their abilities. Research consistently finds that this type of “person praise” has a negative impact on motivation and persistence. Instead, praise children for their hard work and effort. You can also praise them for their focus on a task, persistence in something difficult, or the strategy they use, so instead of saying, “Wow, you are so smart,” try saying, “What a great idea to build a strong base for your tower before you started building!”
46.What is the finding of the research?
A.Praising children for their effort benefits them in many ways.
B.Calling children “smart” helps improve confidence.
C.Children praised for being “smart” tend to fail.
D.Intelligence is something that we can change.
47.Why are children called “smart” more likely to cheat?
A.They are more persistent when faced with failure.
B.They are more interested in performance than in learning.
C.They believe intelligence is something that can’t be changed.
D.They feel the need to maintain their reputation as being “smart”.
48.Which of the following would the author agree with in praising children?
A.You are so good at math.
B.Wow, you are so excellent.
C.I love it when you challenge yourself with reading.
D.You are a talented singer and can easily outperform most others.
49.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The negative consequences of praising children for being “smart”.
B.The relationship between “smart” praise and cheating in children.
C.The strategies of praising children for their hard work and effort.
D.The benefits of praising children for their persistence and focus.
50.What message does the author want to convey in the passage?
A.Calling a child “smart” may not be beneficial for him.
B.Children praised for being “smart” perform better.
C.Praise can make children more confident.
D.Parents should praise their children less.
46.A 47.D 48.C 49.C 50.A
根据第三段“Children praised for “hard work” tend to conclude that they simply need to work harder when they fail, and thus they are more likely to be persistent. Children who are praised for being “smart” also tend to see intelligence as something they can’t change, while children praised for “hard work” are more motivated to keep learning or trying to do better.(那些被称赞“努力”的孩子往往会认为,他们只是需要在失败时更加努力,因此他们更有可能坚持不懈。 故选A。
根据倒数第二段的“The researchers guess that children who are called “smart” feel pressured to uphold this reputation so they cheat to make sure that their performance is consistent with being “smart”.(研究人员猜测,那些被称为“聪明”的孩子迫于压力要保持这种声誉,所以他们会作弊,以确保他们的表现与“聪明”相符)”可知,那些被称赞“聪明”的孩子更有可能作弊,是因为他们觉得有必要保持自己“聪明”的声誉。故选D。
根据最后一段的“Instead, praise children for their hard work and effort. You can also praise them for their focus on a task, persistence in something difficult, or the strategy they use, so instead of saying, “Wow, you are so smart,” try saying, “What a great idea to build a strong base for your tower before you started building!”(相反,要表扬孩子的努力。
通读全文,并结合第二段的“Research clearly shows that praising children for being “smart” is associated with more negative consequences than praising children for their effort. (研究清楚地表明,表扬孩子“聪明”比表扬孩子的努力带来更多的负面后果)”,第三段的“Children who are praised for being “smart” also tend to see intelligence as something they can’t change(被称赞为“聪明”的孩子也倾向于认为智力是他们无法改变的)”,和第四段的“Praising children for being “smart” may even promote cheating.(表扬孩子“聪明”甚至可能助长作弊行为)”可知,作者通过这篇文章传达的信息是说一个孩子“聪明”可能带来负面后果,即这种做法对孩子没有好处。故选A。

Japan is getting tough with recycling— and not in the paper and plastic kind of way. Recently, the country requires that all electronic goods—TVs, VCRs, stereos, and more be recycled. But recycling will not be left to consumers, instead, the devices will be sent to the original manufacturer for proper disposal.
The new law poses a few challenges to manufacturers who are now rushing to set up collection networks and perfecting techniques to take apart and recycle older products. With an eye toward the future, they are also integrating easily recycled materials into new products. Plastics, a major component of most electronic products, pose a particular obstacle because their quality becomes worse and worse with age, losing strength and flexibility even if reprocessed. NEC Corp. overcomes this problem by creating a plastics sandwich, in which the filling is 100 percent recycled plastic and the outer layers a mixture of 14 percent recycled material. The resulting plastic has sufficient strength and toughness for use as a case for desktop PCs. The company, in cooperation with plastic maker Sumitomo Dow, has also developed a new plastic, which engineers claim keeps its mechanical properties through repeated recycling. NEC uses the plastic, which is also flame-retardant(阻燃的)in battery cases for notebook PCs.
Meanwhile, Matsushita Electric, maker of the Panasonic brand, is avoiding plastic in favor of magnesium(镁). Magnesium, says the company, is ideal for recycling because it retains its original strength through repeated reprocessing. Matsushita has developed molding techniques to form magnesium into the case for a 21-inch TV.
Unfortunately, the magnesium case and energy-saving features make the TV about twice as expensive as an ordinary model. The company hopes, however, that increased use of magnesium will eventually bring prices down.
51.According to the present regulations of Japan, the recycling of paper and plastic will be the responsibility of _______.
A.the government B.the manufacturers C.the consumers D.the sellers
52.Which of the following is NOT the character of plastics?
A.Most electronic products contain plastics.
B.It keeps its original strength through reprocessing.
C.Recycled plastics can be integrated into new products.
D.Plastics will lose flexibility after a certain period of time.
53.According to the passage, the term “plastic sandwich” refers to _______.
A.a kind of sandwich-shaped toy made of plastics
B.a kind of plastics with different integration in each layer
C.a kind of plastics with maximum strength and flexibility
D.a kind of plastics made of 100% recycled materials
54.It can be inferred from the passage that _______.
A.selling plastics is the only business of NEC Corp
B.magnesium is an ideal material for making notebook PCs
C.21-inch TV with magnesium case isn’t very popular so far
D.magnesium must be better than the plastics
55.The author writes this passage in order to_______.
A.inform B.direct C.predict D.persuade
【答案】51.C 52.B 53.B 54.C 55.A
根据第一段“Japan is getting tough with recycling— and not in the paper and plastic kind of way.(日本在回收利用方面越来越强硬,但不是纸张和塑料那种方式。)”和“But recycling will not be left to consumers, instead, the devices will be sent to the original manufacturer for proper disposal.(但回收的工作不会留给消费者,相反,这些设备将被送往原制造商进行妥善处理。)”
根据第二段“Plastics, a major component of most electronic products, pose a particular obstacle because their quality becomes worse and worse with age, losing strength and flexibility even if reprocessed.(塑料是大多数电子产品的主要组成部分,它构成了一个特别的障碍,因为它们的质量随着时间的推移会越来越差,即使再加工也会失去强度和灵活性。)”
根据第二段“NEC Corp. overcomes this problem by creating a plastics sandwich, in which the filling is 100 percent recycled plastic and the outer layers a mixture of 14 percent recycled material.
根据最后一段“Unfortunately, the magnesium case and energy-saving features make the TV about twice as expensive as an ordinary model.
故选A。
One morning in 2007, Parthasarathy—we usually called him Partha—came to meet me. He was disabled and was not an engineer but had majored in a computer course in college. I told Partha, “I’d like to employ people like you.” In fact, it turned out to be the right decision to employ him. Partha had an amazing enthusiasm and his disability did not stop him from improving himself. I was not doing any charity by employing him because my company benefited more from Partha. I have realized that physically challenged people are more faithful than others but unfortunately we usually pay scant attention to them.
At that time our office was on the first floor and Partha had difficulty dealing with the stairs. Seeing him struggle, I decided to make the entire office disabled-friendly. Our ground floor is now intended for the disabled people, and we have special toilets for them. We have also built houses for them near the office so that they can avoid long travelling hours.
After meeting Partha, I decided to hire more disabled people. We waited six months to get another disabled person who then became our receptionist.
I don’t regard employing disabled people as charity. I consider it my responsibility. The country has spent much money educating me and I feel it is time for me to do something as a reward.
It is great to work with them. Seeing them work, get married, settle in life and have children is a wonderful experience.
We have 550 employees now, and 20 percent of them are disabled. We go to Engineering Colleges looking for disabled people but only to find one or two in each college. Parents don’t send them out. The biggest challenge for the physically disabled is the attitude of their parents, but we hire them even if they are not engineers.
56.What kind of person was Partha? (No more than 10 words)
___________________________________________________________
57.What does the underlined word “scant” in the 1st paragraph mean? (No more than 2 words)
___________________________________________________________
58.Why is the ground floor intended for the disabled people? (No more than l2 words)
___________________________________________________________
59.How many disabled workers are there in the writer’s company now? (No more than 2 words)
___________________________________________________________
60.Do you agree to the writer’s plan to employ more disabled people? And why? (No more than 30 words)
___________________________________________________________
56.Partha was disabled but didn’t stop improving himself.
57.Little. / Not enough. 58.Because the disabled have difficulty dealing with the stairs.
59.110.
60.Yes. Because it is our duty to reward the country and the disabled need chances to make full use of their skills to improve themselves.
根据第一段的句子“Partha had an amazing enthusiasm and his disability did not stop him from improving himself. Partha was disabled but didn’t stop improving himself.
根据第一段的句子“I have realized that physically challenged people are more faithful than others but unfortunately we usually pay scant attention to them.(我意识到,身体有缺陷的人比其他人更忠诚,但不幸的是,我们通常付出scant关注他们。)” Little./Not enough.
根据第二段的句子“At that time our office was on the first floor and Partha had difficulty dealing with the stairs. Seeing him struggle, I decided to make the entire office disabled-friendly. Our ground floor is now intended for the disabled people, and we have special toilets for them. Because the disabled have difficulty dealing with the stairs.
根据最后一段的句子“We have 550 employees now,and 20 percent of them are disabled.
参考答案:可以表示同意,并给出理由,根据倒数第三段的“I consider it my responsibility. The country has spent much money educating me and I feel it is time for me to do something as a reward. Yes. Because it is our duty to reward the country and the disabled need chances to make full use of their skills to improve themselves.
