C.All work would be meaningless without continuous efforts.
D.The parties should record their actions with cameras.
    【答案】11.B    12.D    13.C
The vaquita is one of the smallest members of the dolphin and whale family. Today, the animal is in danger of disappearing.
The World Wildlife Fund estimates that about 10 vaquitas are left in the world. Last September, scientists found two baby vaquitas in the wild. The discovery was a sign of hope. But biologists fear that more vaquitas die each year than are born.
A vaquita is about 1.5 meter long. Its name means “little cow” in Spanish. The mammals only live in the northern part of the Gulf of California in Mexico. They are most often found close to the coast and quickly swim away if a boat nears them.
The creatures were first discovered by humans in 1958. They can live for at least 21 years. Females are believed to give birth every other year to a single offspring between February and April.
The vaquita population was estimated to be around 600 in 1997. The organization Save the Vaquita said the population decreased 90 percent between 2011 and 2016.
Vaquitas are often caught in fixed fishing nets used to catch fish such as totoaba. Fishermen catch the endangered totoaba illegally with such nets for cash, which is very likely to get vaquitas trapped as well.
In 2017, the Mexican government banned the use of such nets in the area to help save the vaquita. In January, the Mexican Navy and the environmental group Sea Shepherd began a campaign to protect the rare animal’s habitat in the Gulf of California.
To prevent illegal fishing, local fishermen must pass a government inspection. But the Reuters news agency recently reported that it observed fishermen entering the sea in places where they could avoid inspection.
Zak Smith is a director with the Natural Resources Defense Council. He said there was always a “good story” to be told about what was being done for the vaquita.
But he said, “As soon as the cameras go away or the interest of the parties fades, all of those efforts go back to where they were.”
    Questions:
11.Which of the following description about vaquita is true?
12.What did the Mexican government do to protect vaquitas?
13.What can we infer from Mr. Zak Smith’s comment?

    【答案】14.B    15.C    16.A
While psychologists have studied topics like happiness, satisfaction and other human strengths for decades, positive psychology wasn’t officially identified as a branch of psychology until 1998 when Martin Seligman was elected president of the American Psychological Association. Seligman suggested that psychology had become too focused on mental illness. Although such an attitude had produced valuable treatments that helped people become less unhappy, it also meant that psychology was neglecting what was good about life.
Seligman called for research into what makes normal people’s lives positive and fulfilling. He stated that psychology should be just as concerned with creating the good things in life as it is with fixing the bad. From these ideas, positive psychology was born. Interest in positive psychology has remained high ever since. Research in the field has generated tens of thousands of academic papers.
Today, positive psychology is sometimes confused with positive thinking. In essence, positive psychology is a science, and therefore, it uses research based on the scientific methods to reach its conclusions. In comparison, positive thinking is rather a thinking pattern.
Despite its ongoing popularity, positive psychology has still been criticized by some people. A major concern is that positive psychology fails to take individual differences into account. Instead it presents findings as if they will work for everyone in the same way. As a result, the science doesn’t work well in many cases.
    (Now listen again, please.)
    Questions:
    14. What did Seligman think of traditional psychology?
    15. What is positive psychology blamed for?
    16. What is the passage mainly about?

These have been verbal attacks, physical and even things like the tragic shooting of eight Asian-American spa technicians in Atlanta, Georgia. We all want to live in a world that is free from prejudice and____24____everyone has the right to be proud of who they are. Unfortunately, this is a pretty tough ask. We’ve joined forces with other establishments to bring you some resources of the movement of Stop Asian Hate, ____25____the aim is to an end to the rising tide of racism against east and south east asian (ESEA) people.
Since the pandemic, something has been made nasty in the media by comments from Donald Trump calling it “the China virus”, and ESEA people all over the world have found that their lives have been turned upside down. In the wake of the tragic deaths in the US and several studies ____26____(reveal) the real increase of racism against this minority, the Stop Asian Hate movement started a conversation about what is going on. ____30____the growth of attacks and hate crimes still on the rise, we want to give you the tools to be able to understand the value and necessity of our voice, and how to stand up and fight back.
    21.being perceived    22.Since    23.so    24.where    25.of which    26.revealing    27.of    28.we    29.faced    30.With
故填being perceived。
故填Since。
分析句子结构可知,“It is crucial to note that hate crimes and bias incidents have been found to be vastly under-reported”和“these numbers reflect just a fraction”两句话构成因果关系,所以应该用连词so连接。故填so。
故填where。
故填of which。
故填of。
故填we。
故填With。

My students always___44___ me to discuss, analyze, interpret, and evaluate the stories we read without destroying the excitement of being beamed up into another world. For years I ___45___with one response after the other to this challenge. Then one day I read an article by a botanist who had explored the beauty of flowers by x-raying them. His illustrations showed the rose and the lily in their___46___ beauty, and his x-rays___47___the wonders of their construction. I brought the article to class, where we discussed the benefits of examining the internal structure of flowers, relationships, current events, and short stories.
A short story, ___48___ , is not a fossil to admire. Readers must ask questions, guess at the answers,___49___what will happen next, then read to discover. They and the author form a partnership that brings the story to life. Awareness of this partnership keeps the original excitement alive through discussion, analysis, interpretation, and ____50____. Literary explorations allow the reader to admire the authors’____51____ as well as their artistry. In fact, original appreciation may be enhanced by this x-ray vision. The final step is to appreciate once again the story____52____— to put the pieces back together.
Now it is your turn. Form a partnership with your author. During your____53____in reading, enter into a dialogue with the published scholars featured in Short Stories for Students. Through this____54____with experts you will revise, enrich, or____55____your original observations and interpretations.

Given the buzz it’s created, there’s a good chance you’ve heard about ChatGPT. It’s an interactive chatbot powered by machine learning. The technology has basically devoured the entire Internet, reading the collective works of humanity and learning patterns in language that it can recreate. All you have to do is give it a prompt (提示), and ChatGPT can do an endless array of things: write a story in a particular style, answer a question, explain a concept, compose an email—write a college essay-and it will spit out coherent, seemingly human—written text in seconds. The technology is both awesome and terrifying.
22-year-old Edward Tian is working feverishly on a new app to combat misuse of ChatGPT.
Over the last couple years, Tian has been studying an AI system called GPT-3, a predecessor to ChatGPT that was less user-friendly and largely inaccessible to the general public because it was behind a paywall. As part of his studies this fall semester, Tian researched how to detect text written by the AI system while working at Princeton’s Natural Language Processing Lab.
Then, as the semester was coming to a close, OpenAI, the company behind GPT-3 and other AI tools, released ChatGPT to the public for free. For the millions of people around the world who have used it since, interacting with the technology has been like getting a peek into the future; a future that not too long ago would have seemed like science fiction.
For many users of the new technology, wonderment quickly turned to alarm. How-many jobs will this kill? Will this empower nefarious (恶意的) actors and further corrupt our public discourse (公共话语)? How will this disrupt our education system? What is the point of learning to write essays at school when AI-which is expected to get exponentially better in the near future-can do that for us?
Tian had an idea. What if he applied what he had learned at school over the last couple years to help the public identify whether something has been written by a machine?
Tian already had the know-how and even the software on his laptop to create such a program. Ironically, this software, called GitHub Co-Pilot, is powered by GPT-3. With its assistance, Tian was able to create a new app within three days. It’s a testament to the power of this technology to make us more productive.
On January 2nd, Tian released his app GPTZero. It basically uses ChatGPT against itself, checking whether “there’s zero involvement or a lot of involvement” of the AI system in creating a given text.
When Tian went to bed that night, he didn’t expect much for his app. When he woke up, his phone had blown up. He saw countless texts and DMs from journalists, principals, teachers, you name it, from places as far away as France and Switzerland. His app, which is hosted by a free platform, became so popular it crashed. Excited by the popularity and purpose of his app, the hosting platform has since granted Tian the resources needed to scale the app’s services to a mass audience.
59.Which of the following statements is TRUE about GPT-3?
A.It’s designed and researched by Edward Tian in Princeton University
B.Not many ordinary people have used it because it is not free.
C.It is in the same AI system series as ChatGPT and GPTZero.
D.It used to be less user-friendly than ChatGPT but has outdone it now.
60.Wonderment at ChatGPT quickly turned to alarm because many users have the following concerns over ChatGPT EXCEPT _______.
A.AI may replace human beings in the future when it comes to writing essays.
B.Actors may turn bad or even evil if the new technology is adopted in acting.
C.The education system may be badly impacted by the misuse of the new technology.
D.Many people may be out of employment because of the new technology.
61.Principals and teachers may get interested in Edward Tian’s new app probably because _______.
A.the app is hosted by a free platform which is very popular.
B.they know many journalists are also very interested in it.
C.they are eager to share the resources Edward Tian is granted.
D.they are worried about the possibility of students cheating in writing.
62.Which of the following expressions can best describe the principle behind GPTZero?
A.Harm set, harm get. B.Birds of a feather flock together.
C.Fight a man with his own weapon. D.Great minds think alike.
由文第三段第一句“Over the last couple years, Tian has been studying an AI system called GPT-3, a predecessor to ChatGPT that was less user-friendly and largely inaccessible to the general public because it was behind a paywall.”(在过去的几年里,田一直在研究一个名为GPT-3的人工智能系统,这是ChatGPT的前身,它对用户是不太友好的,而且公众基本上无法访问,因为它位于收费墙后面。)
由文第五段“For many users of the new technology, wonderment quickly turned to alarm. How-many jobs will this kill? Will this empower nefarious (恶意的) actors and further corrupt our public discourse(公共话语)? How will this disrupt our education system? What is the point of learning to write essays at school when AI-which is expected to get exponentially better in the near future-can do that for us? ”(对于许多该项新技术的用户来说,惊奇很快变成了恐慌。这会消灭多少工作?这会使邪恶势力强大吗?并进一步败坏我们的公共话语? 这将如何破坏我们的教育系统?当人工智能有望在不久的将来取得指数级的进步时,在学校学习写论文有什么意义?)可知,作者并没有谈到对演员和表演行业的影响,故选B项。
61.推理判断题。由倒数第二段末句“It basically uses ChatGPT against itself, checking whether “there’s zero involvement or a lot of involvement” of the AI system in creating a given text.”(基本上,它使用ChatGPT来对抗自身,检查人工智能系统在创建给定文本时是“零参与还是大量参与”。)
由倒数第二段最后一句“It basically uses ChatGPT against itself, checking whether “there’s zero involvement or a lot of involvement” of the AI system in creating a given text.”(基本上,它使用ChatGPT来对抗自身,检查人工智能系统在创建给定文本时是“零参与还是大量参与”。)可知,该技术的逻辑是用自己来打败自己,C项“Fight a man with his own weapon.”(用他自己的武器去打一个人)符合该语义逻辑,故选C项。

    Remember This
There are a handful of people with uncommonly good memories. But AJ is unique. Her extraordinary memory is not for facts or figures, but for aspects of her own life. Such a memory for autobiographical detail was previously unknown and neuroscientists have coined a new term to describe her condition: hyperthymestic syndrome
It would seem initially as though having a memory like AJ’s would make life qualitatively different — and better. Our culture bombards us with new information, yet so little of it is captured and cataloged in such a way that it can be retrieved later. What would it mean to have all that otherwise lost knowledge at our fingertips? It would be a great benefit if it made us more confident and, in some fundamental sense, smarter. To the extent that experience is the sum of our memories, and wisdom the sum of experience, having a better memory would mean knowing more about the world and about oneself. How many worthwhile ideas have gone unthought because of our memory’s shortcomings?
The greatest geniuses in ancient and medieval times were described as people of superior memories, and there is a long tradition of memory training in many cultures. But over the past millennium, we’ve gradually replaced our internal memory with what psychologists refer to as external memory, a vast superstructure of technological crutches that mean we don’t have to store information in our brains. We have calendars to keep track of our schedules, books (and now the internet) to store our collective knowledge, and photographs to record our experiences. But has anything been lost in this process?
The whole point of our nervous system is to develop a sense of what is happening in the present and what is about to happen in the future, so that we can respond in the best possible way. Our brains are fundamentally prediction machines, and to work they have to find order in the chaos of possible memories. Our brains receive a huge amount of data but most of this does not need to be reflected upon or remembered.
Not surprisingly, drug companies are searching for chemicals that might halt the tide of forgetting. But this raises some troubling ethical questions. Would we choose to live in a society where people have vastly better memories? In fact, what would it even mean to have a better memory? Would it mean remembering things only exactly as they happened, free from the revisions and exaggerations that our mind naturally creates? Would it mean having a memory that forgets traumas (创伤) ? Would it mean becoming AJ?
63.In the second paragraph, what is the writer’s attitude towards people having better memories?
A.He thinks only a few people are capable of achieving this.
B.He believes some information in our culture is not worth acquiring.
C.He is confident that scientific progress will ensure this in the near future.
D.He appreciates that our lives might improve as a consequence.
64.What is the writer’s purpose in the third paragraph?
A.To compare attitudes towards collective knowledge.
B.To illustrate the growing use of aids to memory.
C.To describe how psychology has affected our understanding of memory.
D.To explain how improved knowledge has led to technological development.
65.The word “chaos” in paragraph 4 is used to refer to______.
A.some people’s perception of the world they live in
B.the many conflicting opinions about how the brain functions
C.the result of people not getting rid of irrelevant information
D.different ways in which a damaged brain can impair memory
66.What does the writer suggest about the development of memory drugs?
A.Many people are opposed to this kind of research.
B.It is hard to be precise about their effect.
C.The benefits for society would be immense.
D.Trauma victims should be a priority.
    【答案】63.D    64.B    65.C    66.A
根据第二段“It would seem initially as though having a memory like AJ’s would make life qualitatively different — and better. (起初,似乎拥有AJ这样的记忆会让生活在质量上有所不同——而且更好)”,以及“To the extent that experience is the sum of our memories, and wisdom the sum of experience, having a better memory would mean knowing more about the world and about oneself. (在一定程度上,经验是我们记忆的总和,智慧是经验的总和,拥有更好的记忆意味着对世界和自己有更多的了解)”可知,作者认为:如果拥有好的记忆,生活质量会更好。故选D项。
64.推理判断题。根据第三段“The greatest geniuses in ancient and medieval times were described as people of superior memories, and there is a long tradition of memory training in many cultures.
根据第四段“Our brains are fundamentally prediction machines, and to work they have to find order in the chaos of possible memories. Our brains receive a huge amount of data but most of this does not need to be reflected upon or remembered.
根据最后一段“Not surprisingly, drug companies are searching for chemicals that might halt the tide of forgetting. 故选A项。
    Section C(共 4 题,每小题 2 分,满分 8 分)
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
It is believed that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community. Then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion? ____67____ While people traditionally regard caring, sharing and generosity the most important in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.
____68____ They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in no way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.
Despite common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned (被宣告有罪的) then. ____69____ Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. ____70____ Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.
In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.
A.Modern people behave selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life.
B.Being selfish seems reasonable in the modern society.
C.In the world which is developing so fast, many values are undergoing major changes.
D.But old traditions regarding human relationships are not out-of-date.
E.But we cannot ignore the fact that people in the past live a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.
F.But I personally think that people should not be too selfish.
    【答案】67.C    68.A    69.E    70.F
67.空白前句是作者提出的问题“To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?(在多大程度上你同意或不同意以上观点?)”,其中的the above opinion就是文章开头抛出的观点,即现代人过于贪婪自私,应当回归传统。C选项“在当今这个发展迅速的世界里,许多价值都在发生重大改变”与下文“While people traditionally regard caring, sharing and generosity the most important in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.(过去人们会把关怀、分享和慷慨看作生活和工作中最重要的东西,而现在的人们似乎更关注自己)”中描述的价值观改变相呼应,符合逻辑。故选C项。
故选A项。
70.本段中从问句“Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them?(我们会因为与他人分享、对他人慷慨而感到更快乐吗?)”开始展开自私和慷慨哪个更让人快乐的讨论,作者表示没有固定的答案“There is no fixed answer either.”,而F选项“但我个人认为人们不应该太自私”则表达了作者的主观看法,这与下一句“Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.(关心他人真的能鼓励彼此之间的关系有利发展)”传达的意思也是相符的。故选F项。

    The risk of pre-schooling
“Young children learning to read is one of the most important things primary education does. It’s fundamental to children making progress in life,” says Dominic Wyse, a professor of primary education at University College London, in the UK. “While learning literacy is vital to childern, the way we teach it really matters.”
In a 2022 report, he states that English school system’s intense focus on phonics – a method that involves matching the sound of a spoken word or letter, with individual written letters, through a process called “sounding out” – could be failing some children. A reason for this is that the tests used to assess that early learning may have little to do with the skills actually needed to read and enjoy books or other meaningful texts. For example, the tests may ask pupils to “sound out” and spell nonsense words, to prevent them from simply guessing, or recognising familiar words. Since nonsense words are not meaningful language, children may find the task difficult and puzzling. It doesn’t end up being meaningful, it ends up being memorising rather than understanding context.
Children who attend intensive preschools do not have higher academic abilities in later grades than those who did not attend such preschools, several studies now show. Early education can however have a positive impact on social development – which in turn feeds into the likelihood of graduation from school and university as well as being associated with lower crime rates. In short, attending preschool can have positive effects on later achievement in life, but not necessary on academic skills.
Too much academic pressure may even cause problems in the long run. A study published in January 2022 suggested that those who attended a preschool with a strong academic emphasis, showed lower academic achievements a few years later, compared to those who had not gained a place.

Learning literacy is important for children, and how they learn it counts. A study shows too much phonics learning negatively affects children because passing the tests only requires meaningless pronunciation and spelling instead of understanding. Although pre-schooling does good to the development of society, studies also show too much of it has nothing to do with later academic achievements.

As can be seen from the chart, Senior Three students have different ways to spend their weekends. Different people hold different opinions. Most students would like to go back home and have a good rest, while 25% of the students choose to study at school during weekends. The least students, accounting for 15%, are willing to take outdoor activities to spend their weekends.
Various reasons are responsible for their different choices. To begin with, those who choose to go back home believe that a good rest does help them relax and work more efficiently during the school time. What’s more, outdoor-activity lovers hold the opinion that taking exercise is a wonderful way to refresh themselves. However, a small number of students living far away from home tend to stay at school to save every minute to study.
As far as I am concerned, despite such problems, I hold the view that we should learn to relax ourselves besides concentrating on our studies. As we all know, a good rest and proper exercise can be of vital importance. Only in this way can we improve our efficiency and make our weekends meaningful.
