Seeing the text from Kathy: A family picnic this weekend? I found my hands began to sweat; my heart beat hard. I wanted to yell, “No! Why would you suggest that? I thought we were friends!” I hated picnics.
My hatred of them began as a child. I always got car-sick and it was hot all the way. Air conditioning in vehicles was pretty much unheard of in 1980s Birmingham, and my mother insisted on having all the windows closed because of the unpleasant smell of gas. We would arrive at some faraway destination, usually a car park with a field attached next to a plant, and unpack tasteless and sandwiches, nearly cold sausage rolls and disgusting salads. There were never any toilets, so we had to “go” behind a bush; the memory of being discovered by a random dog-walker still embarrasses me from time to time. My mother sat in a relaxed way on a rug (小毯子) while we girls were playing nearby or maybe lying next to her. But for me this was a time when I suffered a lot. It was frightening to be attacked by ants or spot a dead rabbit in the grass.
As an adult I’d avoided all picnics, but this time I couldn’t. I just said yes, without letting Kathy sense my true feeling about them. She is my best friend and sometimes you must make sacrifices for people you like a lot. “I’ll bring the food, and you bring the drink,” she said.
My ridiculously enthusiastic family and I arrived at the picnic site. My expectations were low. Kathy and her husband Dave unloaded folding tables, chairs, a table cloth and ... a cool box of delicious food mostly purchased from a local deli (熟食店), which does all manner of pre-prepared salads and cold cuts. There was fresh bread, olives, even candles to keep away insects, music, and wine. It was completely delightful. There may have been children playing around too, even if one of them did find a dead bird (told you!). I am now a picnic enthusiast and we’re planning another. I’m even reading up on picnic recipes for it!

44.What can we infer about Kathy and her husband?

Even if you are naturally shy, these three tricks will help you to quickly build a new social circle in any new city.
1. Take pictures
One of the great things about taking pictures at an event or party is that it gives you an excuse to get in touch with the person later. Everybody loves seeing pictures of themselves, and it’s very easy after taking a picture to say “if you’d like I can email it to you”. This can be the seed that leads to new connections. The next time you hear about a fun event email your new contacts to let them know about it.
2. Eat alone in public
You might feel self-conscious eating by yourself but it has an important benefit: you are much easier to approach when you are alone. People may be afraid of interrupting you or being rude if you are in a conversation with someone else. Bring a book or newspaper to read (this will make you feel less self-conscious). Plus, having an interesting book with you will give others an excuse to start a conversation if they’ve read it.
3. Join a class, sports team, or club
Yoga, salsa dancing, volleyball, Toastmasters (a public speaking club), a class for work, etc. Take up a new hobby or continue an old one!
These are all great places to meet new people, primarily because you will be forced to see the same people over and over again in the class. You will automatically make friends with them if you have a common interest and are forced to see each other again.
Tips:
*In the beginning, never turn down an invitation from someone, even if it’s something you wouldn’t normally do.
*Email your new friends with fun things to do instead of always asking what their plans are. If they have a better plan you can drop yours and join them. This will help establish you as someone who is contributing value instead of just taking it (people want this in a friend).
*Don’t let little things in life upset you or be a negative person. People don’t want to be around someone like that!
46._______ can give you an excuse to get in touch with the person later.
A.Taking pictures of others
B.Eating by yourself in public
C.Reading interesting books
D.Joining group activities
47.When having meals, you’d better _______ if you want to make new friends.
A.approach others to show conscious friendliness
B.start a conversation with those who have friends aside
C.invite others to your apartment to eat together
D.sit on your own in public places
48.According to the text, which of the following is NOT mentioned as an advantage of joining a class?
A.It helps you find out people who share a common interest with you.
B.It helps you find out your interest and take up a new hobby.
C.It offers an opportunity to meet the same people repeatedly.
D.It is a good way to meet new people and make friends in a new city.
49.Which of the following pieces of advice is a tip from the text?
A.Try to be outgoing and talkative instead of being shy.
B.Never turn down an invitation from your friends.
C.Offer suggestions on how to spend time together.
D.Always give a positive response to any request.
50.By writing the text, the author intends to tell us
A.why you should change when you move to a new city
B.how you can make new friends in a new city
C.why you should make new friends in a new city
D.how you can keep in touch with strangers
D
Courage is a highly admired virtue. When asked to describe courage, most people conjure up (脑中浮现) the image of an individual running into a burning building, or maybe a hero saving the world. But there's another form of bravery that's much more important because it comes up more often. It's called moral courage.
Moral courage is the ability that allows us to face our fears and to conquer our darkest fears. It’s the ability to face the future without knowing what is certain. It’s the ability to stand tall and confront those who oppose us, those who prevent us from realizing who we are and what we are. But most importantly, it’s the ability to stand up for what’s right, even though there are risks that stand in your way. Sara Anderson once said that "It takes great courage to faithfully follow what we know to be true."
The potential of showing moral courage has the power of changing the world. It was because of the moral courage that Mahatma Gandhi was able to make India free from British rule. He fought bravely against them without the use of any weapon by presenting great moral courage. In this way, he also became a great example for the people of the whole world. It is not that we remember Gandhi because of his body or beauty. We remember him because of the great ideas and principles of his life.
Moral courage is essential not only for a noble life, but a happy one. Without moral courage, we have no control over our lives. Our fears destroy our spirit and make us trapped in depression. Mark Twain said, “Courage is not the absence of fear but the resistance of fear, the mastery of fear.” If our fears cause us to lose confidence in the power of virtue, we will lose something very precious.
People with moral courage rarely get medals, but it is the best marker of true character and a virtue others can be proud of. We must try to develop the power of moral courage that will surely help in ending injustice and wrong and grant us a better world.
51.What is the main function of Paragraph 1?
A.To make a comparison.
B.To propose a definition.

52.In the author’s view, moral courage is not _________.
A.the willingness to face and conquer fears
B.the capacity to stick to what is right
C.the ability to confront opponents
D.the desire to control whoever opposes you
53.What does the example of Mahatma Gandhi tell us?
A.Moral courage can make a difference to the world.
B.Moral courage makes people faithfully follow the truth.
C.Moral courage is essential for leading a happy life.
D.Moral courage restricts great ideas and principles.
54.What can be inferred from Mark Twain’s words?
A.Courage is being brave without any fear.
B.Courage is a spirit to overcome the fear.
C.Having a fear can limit our future lives.
D.Fear can stop us from achieving our goals.
55.What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A.To end injustice and wrong.
B.To pursue excellent virtues.

My family had moved into a new house with big back yard. For some time, my older brother and I had been expecting a family pet. Finally, we managed to persuade our parents that the time had come for keeping one.
Though my brother and I were of like minds about the goal of having a family member, what exactly it meant to each of us was entirely different. I was excited and happy when my parents brought home the dog, Snoopy. Despite the fun of playing with him,I knew it was really more my brother’s pet than mine. I really, really wanted a cat! I tried to show my joy for getting a pet while trying to hide my disappointment that he wasn’t a cat. My parents must have known how I was feeling because they suggested that I could make a wish about it.
Running to my bedroom, I made a wish sincerely that I would have a cat. Not more than a minute or two passed when I heard a faint scratching sound(轻微的抓挠声) coming from the front door. Curious, I stood up, approaching the open front door. There, sitting calmly before me was a large, white cat.
I was absolutely amazed! I went close to the white cat, and it began walking towards me. I gathered his mass into my arms and then I went into the back yard where my parents and brother were playing with Snoopy. So, Snowball joined our household that day, too.
Although my parents always denied having anything to do with Snowball's arrival, I guessed they might have. However, even if they did somehow arrange for him to appear at the front door at the very moment when I was making a wish for a cat, it would not reduce the miracle of a cat doing in my life.
