Last Thursday, my husband Robin and I invited some of our friends for dinner.
Just before I left work, Robin called me and said that he had to stay late at work, which meant that I had to prepare everything for the night on my own. Realizng that I didn’t have too much time, I could feel my anger rising as I drove to pick up Jason and Michael from school. After they got into the car, I informed them that we would stop on the halfway to buy something, and that they needed to help me tidy the house when we got home.
Both of the boys started complaining. I warned them that I was not in the mood to listen. They crossed their arms and became angry. For the next hour, I dragged them from one place to the next. The more I needed them to hurry, the more distracted (分心的) and silly they became. My patience was wearing thin.
Just as we finished our last task, the boys reminded me that we needed to stop at the pet store to pick up crickets (蟋蟀) for their pet lizards (蜥蜴).“You promised that you would buy crickets for us, and you shouldn’t break your promise,” Jason said. “Fine! But we need to be fast,”I replied impatiently, and then we raced to the pet shop.
Fifteen minutes later, we were back in the car with some new passengers: one hundred live crickets in a plastic bag. I pulled the car into the driveway and there was only forty-five minutes left to unpack the car, clean the house, and set the table before my guests arrived. How would I make it?
After returning home, I started barking out orders, but the boys were pouring the crickets from the plastic bag into the box that they prepared and they obviously ignored my orders.
My anger swept over me, and I shouted at them to hurry up, but they didn’t listen.

It was Tamika’s turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly.
“This summer I went to Bradley,” Tamika announced. “They have a big market there. My mom bought a painting. and I got second-hand inline skates. We had a great time there.”
“That’s not a trip,” Jeremy whispered loudly to his partner. “It’s only half an hour from here. My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair shop.”
“Jeremy, no interrupting,” said Miss Snowden, their teacher. “And Bradley has a fine market. I'm glad that Tamika can tell us about it. Go ahead, Tamika.” Miss Snowden smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue.
But Tamika didn’t feel proud of her family’s trip to Bradley any more and she just felt embarrassed. Tamika dropped her head and said in a low voice that she was finished, and then hurried back to her desk. She hoped that the other kids didn’t notice her face turning red.
Tamika listened as Peter talked about his cruise to Jamaica. She heard about Mary’s trip across the Atlantic to Ireland. She heard about John’s horseback ride through the Grand Canyon. It seemed as if everyone but her had taken a big trip over the summer. “I never get to go anywhere.” Tamika thought to herself. A sense of sadness clouded her the whole day.
After school, things got worse. One of the wheels on Tamika’s skates came loose. Now she couldn’t even skate. Sitting on the sidewalk, Tamika tried to fix her wheel but did not know how. Then Miss Snowden happened to pass by. She walked up with a smile on her face, asking. “You look unhappy, Tamika. Why are you sitting here?” Tamika lowered her head, tears building up inside her eyes. “Want to talk about it?” Miss Snowden asked kindly. Tamika nodded, trying to avoid Miss Snowden’s eyes. Bending down, Miss Snowden said in a whisper: “You know, Tamika, we don’t always have to travel far to learn anything.” Tamika looked up and seemed to understand what Miss Snowden meant.

It was 11 p. m. when Alex saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge. She was standing by the railing (栏杆),looking down at the rushing river below. Maybe she was fishing, Alex thought. He continued driving to his home a short distance away. His friend’s car had broken down, so Alex was going home to get some tools before heading out to help. Tools in hand, he climbed into his car. Instead of taking a shortcut, though, he chose to head back over the bridge.
Something about that woman didn’t sit right. Why would she be fishing this late at night in May,when it was still cold in this city? As he crossed the bridge, Alex saw the woman standing in the same spot. He pulled a U-turn and parked his car with the hazards (警示灯) flashing, blocking one of the four lanes (车道). In case there was trouble, he hoped another driver would take note and help. He stepped out of his car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s, dressed in pants and a heavy coat. She was crying while saying something. Alex didn’t know exactly what was going on, but he knew exactly he should do something to help.
“Hey, what’s going on?”Alex called out while approaching. The woman didn’t answer or turn around. Alex stepped closer and stood with the woman side by side.
“What’s going on?”he asked again. The woman kept silent for a while before she told Alex, but mostly talked to herself that she was going through a particularly tough period. She was jobless, not doing well in everything. In short, life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped. “Not everything goes as planned,” agreed Alex. He started talking about the ups and downs he’d faced in his life.

It was exam time at Marc’s school. Every day, their teachers gave them loads of homework and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in it. Everyone followed the teachers’ instructions and made preparations for it, except Marc. He just turned a deaf ear to it. He thought he would rather play football than study.
His mum and dad repeated the importance of revision for exams over and over again. They told him that he should be working hard preparing for the test. But the weather was sunny and he thought he had better things to do.
“Shall we go to the park?” he said to his friend Huck one afternoon. “It’s a nice day. We could play football and kick around.” Huck shook his head. “I’m supposed to review my lessons,” he said. “I’m going home to do some math.”
Marc was amazed. “You’d rather do math than play football?”
“Math is important. Besides, my mum says she will buy me a mountain bike if I do well in the math exam.”
“That’s crazy,” said Marc. Huck shrugged (耸肩) and replied, “Wait until I beat you in the test and you will watch me riding past on my mountain bike!”
“You won’t beat me,” said Marc.
    “Oh yes, I will.”
“Oh no, you won’t! That will never happen. Just wait and see!”
For the first time ever, Marc wanted to perform well. He couldn’t bear it if his friend came top and he did badly. So when he got home, he opened his math book. But there was so much to do. All of a sudden, he felt like he’d forgotten everything he had learned that year! He didn’t know where to start. When his sister Lily came in, he was sitting expressionlessly by the desk, just staring out of the window.

When I started karate (空手道) class a few years ago, I didn’t know a single person. I felt ashamed of having no idea how to do any of the moves. Even though I liked the learning part, I did not like the feeling-worse-than-everyone part!
But one day after class while I was putting my shoes on, a girl named Abigail said, “That last kick we practiced is so hard for me, and you’re so good at it.”
“You must have confused me with someone else,” I replied. “I’m not good at any of it.”
“In that case, I’m in trouble,” she joked, “because you’re the one I stand behind and copy in class.”
    I laughed, “Seriously?”
“Seriously!” she laughed, too. After that, we became great friends. However, a few months later when Abigail’s mom got a job in a different state and she had to move away, I was rather sad. I had a tough time dragging myself to karate for a while after that I missed Abigail so much.
Then, a girl named Ava joined my class. She was always quiet. Until one day we finally had a conversation.
“It must be weird (怪异的) being the new one in class.” I said.
“So weird!” said Ava. “You do things really differently than we did at my old dojo (柔道馆).”
I suddenly realized she’d been silent only because she was new. We started talking more, and we got along so well that we started hanging out after class. Then, almost a year later, guess who showed up at karate.
“This is so cool.” I said, giving Abigail a huge hug. “What are you doing here?”
“My mom’s job in New York didn’t work out,” she explained. “So we got to move back.”
“That’s the best news ever!” I said. “You have to meet my dear friend Ava. And Ava, meet my dear friend Abigail.”
I put my arms around their shoulders. Feeling very excited, I told them I hoped we could get along well and be close friends, while Abigail and Ava stared at each other with some hesitation and an uncertain smile.

She waited an hour, but still they did not come. When she came the gate by the road, she met Mr. Lee, and told him how long Willie had been gone. Mr. Lee thought he must have gone sleep under the trees. So they went to all the trees under which Willie used to play. but he was nowhere to be found. By this time the sun had gone down. The news that Willie was lost soon spread over the neighbourhood, and all the men and women turned out to hunt. They hunted all night.

There was a string tied round his neck, and a bit of paper tied to it. Willie ‘s father. Mr. Lee. took the pape , and saw that it was a letter from Willie. He read it aloud. It said,“ O father ! Come to me. I am in the big hole in the pasture.”
Everybody ran at once to the far corner of the pasture; and there was Willie, alive and well, in the hole . How glad he was when his father caught him in his arms, and lifted him out !
Now I will tell you how Willie came to be in hole.

    7.完成以下续写文中的衔接和结尾句。
The cheerful girl, Jenny, with golden hair was almost five. Waiting with her mother at the checkout stand, she saw a necklace of shining white pearls in a pink metal box. Quickly the mother checked the back of the little metal box and then looked back into the begging blue eyes of her little girl’s upturned face. “A dollar and ninetyfive cents. That’s almost $2. If you really want it, I’ll think of some extra housework for you and in no time you can save enough money to buy it for yourself. Besides, you might get another dollar bill from Grandma on your birthday a week away.”
After dinner back home, she did more housework and even she asked the neighbor for housework for ten cents. On her birthday, Grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at least she had enough money to buy the cheap necklace from the dime store (廉价商店).
Jenny loved her pearl necklace. She wore it everywhere. The only time she took it off was when swimming.
Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night when he finished the story, he asked Jenny, “Do you love me?”
“Oh, daddy. You know that I love you.”
    “Then give me your necklace.”
“Oh, daddy, not my pearl necklace. But you can have my Barbie doll — the one you gave me. She’s my favorite.”
“That’s okay, Honey. Daddy loves you. Good night.” And he brushed her cheek with a kiss.
Daddy repeated the same request about a week after the story time. However, Jenny refused and wouldn’t give up her necklace to her daddy.
A few nights later when her daddy came in, Jenny was sitting on her bed, waiting for her father._________________________________________________________________________ “What’s it, Jenny? What’s the matter?” Jenny didn’t say anything but lifted the metal box up with her little hand to her daddy. And when she opened it, there was her little pearl necklace. With a little trembling voice, she finally said, “Here, daddy. It’s for you.” _______________________________________________________________________________
With tears in his own eyes, Jenny’s kind daddy reached out one hand to take the cheap necklace. ___________________________________________________________________ He had had it all time. He was just waiting for her to give up the cheap necklace made of artificial pearls so he could give her a real valuable treasure. Jenny was very glad to take the necklace and a big smile appeared on her face. _____________________________________________________.
    8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2022. He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the U. S. - Mexico border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon. He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he could pick it up and throw it away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. A hand-drawn bow(蝴蝶结)accompanied the word. Heiss flipped the paper over. On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!
Heiss was charmed. He suspected(猜想)that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind, direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, doll clothes. and art supplies.
Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no results; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2022, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio Xeny, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To. his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his search on the station’s Facebook page immediately.

My family used to live in London. But then a few years ago my father got transferred (调动) and we came to a small town in Scotland. Everything was new here. The neighborhood, and the school. I was not liking it much here. At this new school, nobody knew me. As I was shy, I had difficulty making friends and felt lonely all the time.
One day, when I was sitting in my seat, a girl came to me and introduced herself. It was Vivian. She smiled at me and asked if I wanted to have lunch with her. That day, we spent a great time together. Slowly, we became best friends.
In the coming month of October, it was my best friend’s birthday. I and other classmates in the school had planned a day out for her. We all decided to take her to a nearby picnic spot in the afternoon and give her a surprise party. Everybody contributed a little to the cake and snacks. After school, we took her to the picnic spot. She cut the cake and we all enjoyed the snacks. After everybody had eaten, we all decided to enjoy the boat ride.
It was a pleasant day. The lake was small but beautiful. We were all singing together and cheering up. In the clear blue water of the lake, we could see the colorful fishes swimming rapidly. There were also ducks adding to the beauty of the scene.
Everybody started clapping looking at those pretty birds. Vivian also became quite excited. Just when she was trying to touch the ducks, she lost her balance. Before anyone could do anything, she fell into the lake.

    10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Daniel looked at the old shoes carefully. “Ryan, your lost wallet is probably near the monkey bars. Your shoes smell like red pine (松树). And…” But Daniel was interrupted by a kid shouting from the playground, “Ryan! I found your wallet! It was under the monkey bars!” Ryan’s eyes went wide, but Daniel only shrugged (耸肩) and delivered his trademark words. “The truth always comes out.”
For Daniel, the truth was like buried treasure just waiting for someone to dig up. And Daniel was good at digging. He had a hard-earned reputation as the best detective in fourth grade.
Daniel had barely made it across the playground before someone else called him. It was Jenny. “Daniel! I have a new case for you! It’s about Coby Gardner,” Jenny said. “His parents picked him up early on Monday, and he hasn’t been in school since. He didn’t have a cold and never said anything about a vacation. Where do you think he is?”
Daniel tackled the new case with his usual attention to detail. He made observations, conducted interviews, and then connected information. But things weren’t going so smoothly even after a lot of investigation. Someone had seen Coby’s mom driving around town with balloons in her car. Another student accidentally heard Coby talking to a teacher about a waiting room, but she couldn’t remember which teacher or which waiting room. And “Haven’t seen him since Monday morning” was all Coby’s bus driver said when interviewed.
What did balloons, a waiting room, and getting picked up from school all have in common? It wasn’t Coby’s birthday. Lots of places had waiting rooms, but only a few allowed balloons. He imagined himself digging deep, and suddenly he got an idea.
Daniel opened his notebook. He wrote the word hospital and then circled it. Coby had gone to a hospital. But why? Was someone in his family sick or hurt? Daniel had the strange feeling that he was nosing into Coby’s private life. He decided not to dig any more.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    参考答案:
    1.One possible version:
The moment I turned round, I found crickets were jumping all over my kitchen. I screamed and jumped up onto a chair to get away from them. I could feel that I was about to start yelling in a way I had rarely done. Then, I realized that I had two choices: I could continue feeling angry, or I could let go. My two sweet boys were running around and screaming with laughter. Watching them capture the crickets, I felt as if time had slowed down, and I saw the situation clearly for the first time. How sweet their smile was!
Finally, I jumped off the chair and started catching crickets with my boys. It took us about fifteen minutes to get all the crickets into their box. Then my boys enthusiastically volunteered to help me prepare the dinner. With joint efforts, we made it in time and had an amazing dinner party. The experience that night is a constant reminder to me that I should never let anger keep me from enjoying life. When things go wrong, I tell myself that everything will be okay, because we do have the power to decide how we’re going to react to them.

At this moment, Jeremy was walking by and saw them. Noticing Tamika’s teary eyes, Jeremy swallowed what he’d intended to say. A sense of guilt seized him and he stood there, frozen. Miss Snowden smiled and encouraged him, “An apology never comes late.” Jeremy raised his eyebrows and said in a low voice, “I shouldn’t have said that. Sorry.” Tamika looked down at her skates, wiped her tears and murmured, “Actually, that’s OK. It’s my skates”, spinning the loose wheel.
“I can fix it,” Jeremy said with confidence. Grabbing her skates, Jeremy tightened the screws in no time. He looked up brightly and handed the skates to Tamika. Tamika tried her skates and surprisingly they were working well. A slight smile lifted, “Thanks”. Jeremy felt a wave of relief flooding into his heart. “I help my dad fix things all the time. He wanted to make careful preparations for the exam, but ran into difficulties with math. He was at a loss what to do next. “Don’t worry! I’ll help you. Just be confident!” replied Lily. The following days, Marc worked very hard and made great progress. Gradually, his confidence grew and he could solve math problems with ease, with the instructions appearing in his brain as if the teacher was standing at his side .
On the day of the exam, Marc went to school with great confidence. He met Huck in the classroom, who looked delighted as if he was bound to win. But Marc didn’t care. When the exam began, Marc answered all the questions as best as he could. Several days later, the result came out. It turned out that Marc did much better than Huck. “Well done,” said Mom. “We could go to see a movie to celebrate, and you can choose one.” “I think Lily should choose,” said Marc. “I would never have gained such a great achievement without her help and encouragement .”

Things seemed all right at first. However, with time going by, conflicts emerged. Abigail always complained that every time I hung out with Ava, she was left alone, while Ava said that I paid more attention to Abigail, which drove her crazy, believing that our friendship was not what it used to be. Trapped in the dilemma, I, enveloped by the sense of sadness, still felt confused why things turned out to be that complicated, not knowing how to tackle the problem. Worse still, karate even became the most frightening thing to me.
One day, I simply could not take it anymore. With tears streaming down my cheeks, I stopped them from arguing and said with a deep sigh, “Why can’t you get along with each other well? Both of you are my best friends.” Hearing my words, they didn’t utter a single word, sinking into a deep silence. After what seemed like a century, Ava finally placed her arm with apparently unaccustomed affection around Abigail’s shoulders. Seeing this scene, I gasped with relief and burst into laughter.

He and Caper went to the pasture field, came to the edge of the hole and sat down. When bending over to see how deep the hole was he lost his balance and fell in. He tried hard to get out, but failed. Fortunately, the little dog would not leave him, but ran round and round, reaching down and trying to pull him out. However, while Caper was pulling Willie by the coat sleeves, he fell in too. Willi called for his parents as loud as he could, but he was so far away from the house that no one could hear him. He cried and called until it was dark, and then he lay down on the ground, with Caper lying down close beside him
It was not long before Willie cried himself to sleep. When he woke up in the morning, he began to consider how to get out. He thought of the little writing book in his pocket. He took it out, and wrote the letter to his father. Then he tore the leaf out, took a string out of his pocket, tied it round Caper's neck, and tied the letter to the string. Then he lifted the dog up, helped him out, and said to him, “Go home, Caper, go home!” The little dog soon ran home.
