My best friend Carla Hernandez called me on Thursday afternoon. “Daniel, meet me in the park near the playground in five minutes. I have a great idea!” This worried me because Carla’s great ideas almost always meant big trouble for me!
I dashed outside and jogged to the park. When I saw Carla, my heart sank because her large dog Perro was with her. I liked everything about Carla except Perro. I had never had a pet in my house, and I felt uncomfortable and nervous around animals. But I was embarrassed to say I was afraid of Carla’s dog.
Upon my arrival, Carla smiled in a joyful voice. “Isn’t this the perfect location for a pet show?” I was surprised at her words. Carla explained to me that all the kids in the neighborhood could show off their pets’ talents and demonstrated the things they did well. Besides, there were plenty of comfortable benches for our parents and friends to sit on as audience. Carla added that I could be the announcer since I didn’t have a pet for the show. What she said directly affected my mood because crowds always made me nervous and unsure. Looking into her eyes, I apologized, “I’m sorry, but that’s impossible! Besides, I don’t like animals, remember?”
“That’s nonsense,” said Carla. “There’s nothing to be concerned about because you’ll be great! ”Just at that time, Perro leaped up, slobbered all over me, and almost knocked me down.“ Yuck. Down, Perro! Stay! ”I shouted. Perro sat as still as a statue.“ Wow, you’re good at that, ”Carla raised her voice excitedly. "Now let’s get started because we have a lot to do.”
With her encouragement, I decided to have a try. After going back home, I couldn’t wait to practise announcing each pet’s act. By Saturday morning I had practiced hundreds of times. However, my stomach was doing flip flops by the time the audience arrived at the park. The size of the crowd made me feel even more anxious.

2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I adopted him, he had been rescued from death inside a tightly tied black trash bag abandoned right beside a garbage truck on the road. An alert garbage man noticed the bag moving and used a metal rake (耙子) to tear open the bag to look inside. There was my shaking puppy dog. The rake damaged the nerves in his back so he limped a little, but he could run as fast as lightning.
For my dog’s first birthday, I entered him in a fun run sponsored by our local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). I’m not much of a runner, but the run was only 3 kilometers, so I thought it would be fun for both of us.
We practiced for weeks. On our practice runs, he was always eager to go and usually dragged me along behind him. I worked on his leash (拴狗链) manners so that he wouldn’t trip me on the big day. I felt we were ready for anything.
The fun run was downtown among the big buildings, so the noise of barking dogs all around us rose to a deafening pitch at the start of the race. My dog was frightened when the starting tone went off. He had trouble running in the right direction with all the confusion around us. Soon the runners began to thin out, and my dog was running straight and fast. We were passing people and making great time. I was dreaming of a gold-medal finish.
However, when we were six blocks from the finish, my dog suddenly stopped and dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes. I almost dislocated my shoulder from the sudden stop as I was pulled backward by the leash.
He was lying flat on his belly with his head down in the middle of the crossroads. At first I thought something bad had happened to him. He was shaking and sobbing. I did a quick check and couldn’t see anything wrong. I tried to get him up, but he refused. The police officer doing traffic control impatiently signed me to move away so he could release the cars.

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We were in our late 20s with a child when my husband, Ralph, finally graduated from college.
“OK, now I deserve a piano,” I blurted out when he sat down for lunch just before the graduation ceremony. A look of surprise crossed his face.
“We could never afford a piano. After so many years of hard work, we got you through school. Now I deserve a piano,” I repeated.
Several months later, Ralph, with help, moved the upright piano we bought for $ 100 into our cottage’s tiny arched dining room. It smelled a little musty, but had great tone.
Ralph started graduate school, leaving no money for private piano lessons. The first thing that came to my mind was Santa Monica City College—maybe it offered piano lessons. Skimming the catalog, I danced around the room when I found a class at the same time the boys were at preschool.
Practicing, however, was not so easy. Four-year old redheaded Denny crawled out of bed in the evening on a regular basis. That was my time to practice. He’d pad out of the bedroom in his sleeper and climb up on the bench with me. Soon he began plinking (发出叮铃声) on the high keys. I tried to ignore him. He listened to the echoes of the keys and plinked some more. Doing all I could do to keep focused on my own practicing, I continued to ignore him.
This practice pattern became an evening routine. After a while, I didn’t even hear him anymore. Ralph studied. Denny plinked on the high keys, and I focused on my piece for the end-of-the-term recital (独奏会).
That evening came. However, Ralph said he was busy preparing for the midterms and couldn’t watch Denny.
Pacing back and forth, I shook my head trying to figure out what to do. Time was running out. I bundled up Denny—with his sleeper on—and drove off to the recital with him.
“We’ll sit in the front row, Denny,” I whispered. “You have to be very quiet and listen when I am playing.” He nodded, said “Uh-huh,” and we sat down.

4.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Ahmad sat at a table in the school cafeteria. The election for fifth-grade class president was only about two weeks away, and Ahmad knew it was time to begin seriously campaigning.
“I think you need a catchy slogan, ” said his friend, twirling(旋转)a pencil as he thought. “How about Authentic and Approachable: Always Ahmad? ”Ahmad beamed. “It’s got a nice ring to it.”
“You need something that people will remember. They won’t forget that Olivia was the fourth-grade president last year and they’ll like the fact that she has experience, “his friend added. Ahmad nodded, grinning. “I know, but I think I can bring some fresh ideas. Do you know Olivia’s plans for the campaign?”
Olivia, meanwhile, sat at her kitchen table with her twin sister. They were eating cupcakes while discussing what to put on the signs they planned to make. At the center of the table were posterboard in bright colors, markers, pens, colored pencils, and crayons.
“Where should we start?” asked her sister ,brushing the cream from her hands. “What do you want people to know about you?” Olivia raised her head and thought for a moment. “I want them to know I’m a hard worker,“ she said, eyes bright and alert. “I have experience as class president. I also have a lot of ideas of making this a great school year.” “Experience is truly important,” commented her sister. “Dad once told me he would vote for someone who had proven to be the kind of leader he was looking for in his company.”
An enormous grin spread across Olivia’s face. “What about Olivia for President-All Original, All Experience,” suggested her sister. “Oh, or Olivia for President, Opportunity for All?“ “I like both of those, ”exclaimed Olivia.“ The first one reminds the voters of my experience. The second one lets them know I will listen to their ideas and work for and with them. ”Her words fell as she took out a fat red marker and began the first poster.

I’m not going to say storms are good, because I know what they’ve stolen from people. But my story is of a storm that gave me more than I’d thought to ask for.
The tornado(龙卷风)blew through on a Sunday. We were visiting grandparents in Raleigh then, unaware that seventy miles away the big tree in our front yard was tearing through our roof and destroying the kitchen.
When we returned, we saw Rosica’s father and brothers in our yard, gathering debris(碎片)and using a chain saw to cut the thickest branches of the fallen tree, though we barely knew them then. They were covered in sweat and dirt.
My mom didn’t seem to notice how happy they were to help us because the first thing she said was “Oh, you don’t need to be doing all that work!” Mr. Flores laughed.“Claro! Of course, we don’t. But more importantly, you cannot sleep in that house tonight. Come and speak to my wife. She’ll help you figure out what to do.” My mom doesn’t usually let people tell her what to do, but she sighed(叹气)deeply as she took in the sight of our home in the failing light, reached for my hand, and followed our neighbor to their house.
The Flores family lived across the street. Their home was the same size as ours but housed three generations. Rosica was my age. I knew her name and face, but since she was new to our school, and had a different teacher than I did, we had never spoken. It was she who answered the door.“Mama is changing the sheets on the bed for you, and there’s some lemon cheesecake on the table.”
“Please don’t trouble yourself. I think I’d call a hotel and see about a room,” my mom said, more uneasy than usual. Mrs. Flores came down the stairs and smiled at us warmly, “Y our room is ready. I know it’s more encouraged to give than receive, but allow yourself to receive a place to stay, and allow us the chance to give you something you need!”

I looked around at the other patients waiting to see the doctor. Maybe they all had more romantic plans for the evening on this Valentine’s Day, but for now the group seemed anti-social. Three people had their heads down, staring at cell phones. Another was absorbed in a magazine. The receptionist tapped at her computer. Everyone was in their own little world.
But I couldn’t judge them for it. I would probably be buried in my cell phone too—if I hadn’t forgotten to charge it before I left home. It would have been nice to strike up a conversation to pass the time on this day, a day of love and friendship. Instead I sat patiently in my plastic chair as a couple of new people took distant seats.
“Roberta? The doctor’s ready for you,” the nurse called. At least I’ll have some kind of human connection, I thought.
My checkup went well, and I breezed out of the office to my little Honda in a space right out front. I got in and tured the key. Nothing. Oh, no. Not again. I’d sent the car to the garage several times already for this very problem and thought it had finally been fixed.
I reached for my cell phone to call AAA — then remembered. It was dead, like my car. I would have to use the phone inside. A few people glanced up when I came back into the waiting room, then quickly went back to what they were doing. I went straight to the reception desk, but the receptionist was not there. So I tured back to the people in the waiting room.
“I wouldn’t normally do this,” I said to the group, hoping that I sounded apologetic. Several people tured toward me to listen. “But my car won’t start …”
The nurse popped her head into the room. “You in trouble, Roberta?” she said. “I’ll go and take a look.” I followed the nurse outside. As I passed through the door, I felt someone was behind me.

Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests, green fields, and a vast ocean. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their borne. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.
Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace.
“So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back?” Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. “How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumb up and hugged the sisters.

It had a long strap(带子), and she carried it slung(挂) across her shoulder, It was about eleven o’clock at night, and she was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to grab her purse. The strap broke with the single hard pull the boy gave it from behind. But the boy’s weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance so the boy fell on his back. The large woman simply turned around and kicked him.
Then she picked the boy up by his shirt front, and said, “Pick up my purse. boy, and give it to me.” She bent down enough to permit him to bend and pick up her purse. “Now, aren’t you ashamed of yourself?”
“I’m very sorry, lady, I’m sorry,” whispered the boy, He looked as if he were fourteen or fifteen, weak, thin and willow-wild, in worn tennis shoes and blue jeans.
“Um-hum! Your face is dirty. I’ve got a great mind to wash your face for you. Don’t you get anybody home to tell you to wash your face?”
“No, madam.” said the being-dragged boy.
She dragged him up the street. When she got to her door, she dragged the boy inside, down a hall, and into a large kitchen-furnished room.
She asked. “What is your name?”
“Roger,” answered the boy.
“Then, Roger. you go to that sink and wash your face,” said the woman, whereupon she turned him loose at last Roger looked at the door-looked at the woman-looked at the door—and went to the sink. It was 11 p. m. when Alex Conrad saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. She was standing by the railing, peering down at the rushing river. At her feet was what appeared to be a backpack; maybe she was fishing, he thought.
As he crossed the quarter-mile-long bridge again after getting something from home for his friend’s party,Conrad saw the woman standing in the same spot. Something didn’t sit right. Why would she be fishing this late at night—in December? He pulled a U-turn and parked some 20 feet away with his hazard lights (汽车危险警示灯) flashing, blocking one of the four lanes. He stepped out of his car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s, dressed in pants and a heavy coat. What he’d thought was a backpack was in fact a rope pooled by her feet. One end was tied to a bridge post. The other, around her neck.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Conrad called out. He didn’t acknowledge the rope because he didn’t want to let on that he knew exactly what was going on. She spoke a little, but he kept inquiring, eventually pulling from her that she was going through a particularly rough time. She was jobless, not doing well in school- in short, life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped.
“Not everything goes as planned,” agreed Conrad. He started talking about the ups and downs he’d faced in his life. As he talked, he inched closer.
When she mentioned that, on top of everything else, her car had broken down, Conrad chuckled. “Well, that’s better than when my friend rolled his car,” he said. “Too much power for him.” The woman laughed. He told a few more jokes about his friends, and the dumb things they’ve done, just to get her mind off stuff.
Conrad is a quiet guy, not given to gabbing (喋喋不休). But for the next hour he found enough topics of conversation to keep the woman engaged and even laughing. She grew comfortable enough to let him get within a few feet of her. Then a switch seemingly went off.

Sock-eater ants are made-up animals with the best intention ever.
“Ow!Ow!” I shouted as I broke my jump rope rhythm and trapped my feet in the loose rope. “Something in my shoe is biting me,” I screamed. My teacher, Miss Bell, heard me and hurried over. “Which foot is it?” she asked. I stuck up my right foot as she bent over to inspect it. Just then, feeling a new sting, I yelped in pain. “Here. Let’s take off your shoe.” Instructed Miss Bell, squatting down to get the shoe.
Then, I remembered the holes in my socks. Welfare socks didn’t last long. Holes in socks were common for our family in the years following the Great Depression. Socks with holes in the heels often got pulled down so the hole wouldn’t show. Where there was a hole, there would soon be a blister. Every week as she washed our clothes, Mama would say, “Even if we’re poor and our clothes are worn out, we can still be clean.”
I refused to let Miss Bell take off my shoe. I could not bear for her and the others on the playground to see the hole in my faded red sock. “Come on, then. Let’s go inside to the office.” I did my best to hold back my tears. Yet, each time the thing in my shoe stung me, I would let out aloud, “Oh, oh, oh!” Tears raced down my twisted face.
Miss Bell lifted me onto the desk and tried again. “Let me take a look.”She just about had the shoe off when I saw the hole. I grabbed the shoe and pulled on and held it. The stinging worsened the tighter I grabbed the shoe. Miss Womble, the fifth-grade teacher, came into the office. “Can I help? I know her. She lives next door to me.” “I guess ants are stinging her right foot, but she won’t let me take off her shoe,” said Miss Bell.

参考答案:
1. When the show began, I took a deep breath and announced the first pet. It was a bird named Butter whose talent was walking back and forth on a wire. When Butter finished, everyone clapped and cheered. So far, everything was perfect. I was beginning to feel calmer and more relaxed. I realized that being an announcer was not so bad after all.
Then it was Carla and Perro’s turn. Carla asked Perro to sit, but Perro didn’t sit. Carla was at a loss what to do next. Perro was too interested in watching so many pet friends at the show. Suddenly, Perro broke free from the rope, leaped quickly and knocked over the bird cage. “Sit!” I shouted at Perro. “Stay!” I cried. Suddenly, everyone stopped and stared at me. Hearing my instructions, Perro sat immediately and looked at me. “Wow, amazing!”said Carla. He smiled at me and gave me a thumb-up. I felt so happy and proud.

2.But I couldn’t get my seventy-five-pound dog to get up. The harder I tried to scoop him up from the pavement, the more he fought me. The officer yelling and cars honking, I pulled him with all my might, but in vain. Finally, I got my arm under him and lifted him up in a fireman’s carry, throwing him over my shoulder. As I staggered to the roadside, people around were taking my dog’s side, laughing I was running him too hard. I was fuming. My dog would run all day long and he wasn’t the least bit tired.
Another half-block of carrying him brought the answer — a moving garbage truck. Its sound must have hit my dog’s sensitive ears, so he cried louder and clawed at my back as we drew closer to it. I held on tighter and ran as fast as I could to get my sweet baby dog away from that scary garbage truck. I ran with him on my shoulder until I felt him relaxed, and then I set him down. He wagged his tail in gratitude for saving him from the garbage truck. Surely, we didn’t win any medals, but I won his trust forever.

3.I told Danny it was my turn to play, be good, and be quiet when I play, and I'll come back to you when I'm done. He nodded and said I would be good, but I looked at Danny hesitantly and walked straight to the stage to begin my play. I wanted to give the audience my best. I was so absorbed in my performance that I forgot Danny was offstage.
I was playing to my heart's content, and I saw Danny climbing onto my piano stool, next to me. He was very quiet there. He didn't make a sound. He watched me play. My hanging heart calmed down and I focused more on my playing. Far from freaking me out, the arrival of the baby gave me a great deal of confidence, and I managed to complete my solo without a problem. When I finished, there was thunderous applause and I picked up my little Danni to thank the audience and waved off the stage.

The classmate who pushed the wheelchair beside him said, “He is trying to save a classmate, so he can’t walk because of his foot injury. He needs to rest for a period of time to recover.” All the people present applauded for the former helpful fourth-grade president, including Ahmed.
Ahmad went to the front of the room to begin his speech after Olivia.“Olivia is a great class president ,” Ahmed said tearfully. “His behavior deeply touched our hearts. Each of us should learn from his noble spirit of sacrificing oneself to save others.” I want to learn from the best. I suggest that Olivia stay on as fifth-grade president when she gets well again. I’d be happy to be his assistant, if he doesn’t mind. It was a thunderous ovation, and both men deserved it. The two men embraced and smiled in a warm round of applause.

Gradually, we became familiar with each other just like a family. With Thanksgiving Day coming, our house was still under repair, which meant that we had to celebrate the festival with the family.
Following our stay in their home, a beautiful tradition began. On Thanksgiving Day, we together made a big dinner. My mom roasted the turkey which was popular with everyone. During the dinner, my mom extended her thanks to the family. “Thank you! I really don’t know what to say, but really thank you!” “Friends need no thanks!” said Mrs. Flores. I turned to see all the other patients following me. A bit puzzled, I went to my car and slid into the driver’s seat. One of them called “Pop your hood!” So I pressed the button. Several others bent forward, most probably leaning into check the engine. “The screw is loose,” one assured me, “Trust me. I used to be a mechanic”. Having fetched the tool from his car, he began to twist it. It was not long before he straightened up to rest, rubbing his back. Unexpectedly, the other patients just volunteered to take his turn despite their own health condition. When the “mechanic” gave a thumbs-up, everyone called out together, “Try it now!”
I said a quick prayer and turned the key. The engine turned over immediately. A cheer went up. Several hands shut the hood. “Don’t make any stops on the way home,” the “mechanic” said. “Keep the car running till the battery gets a good charge.” I backed my car out of the space, then paused to wave at the crowd of people who’d saved the day. My Honda never stalled again. It turns out that my waiting room team had done a better job than my garage ever did. I guess that’s just what happens when people come together. And there’s no better valentine than that.

Was it because she felt sorry for him, or was it because she wanted something in return? He couldn’t figure it out. After a while, the woman turned off the stove and served him a plate of steaming hot food.
When they were finished eating, she got up and took out her purse. Roger’s heart sank. He thought she was going to ask for something in return for her kindness. The wind was howling, creating an echoing sound on the icy irons. The only sound he could hear was his heart pounding loudly in his ears... like the insistent heavy drumming of rain beating upon a window pane.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly, bright lights appeared—it was the police ! Someone had reported Conrad’s car for being parked on the bridge—just as he’d hoped. An instant later, a loud squealing sound of brakes was heard, and two police officers stepped out of the car. Recognizing what was going on, they dashed straight towards Conrad and the woman. The two officers took hold of the woman, then handed Conrad a knife so that he could cut off the rope tethering her to the bridge. He grasped the knife, placed the tip of his flexed thumb on the railing and cut the rope knot down firmly. The woman collapsed on their shoulders.
