    1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落的开头语续写两段话,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. “No Santa Claus?” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it. “Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”
“Go where, Grandma?” I asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money, and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for break during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I chose a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid ten dollars down. “Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.

I was walking on the shore when I suddenly heard someone crying. It just drew my attention and I began to look around. Suddenly I saw a little child sitting on a rock who was crying. It was around twelve at night. “Why is he here? Why is he crying?” I wondered. And above all I couldn’ t see anyone around him, for he was too small to be alone. I approached him, initially he was frightened but I calmed him down and gave him a chocolate to eat. From the way he ate the chocolate I could make this out that he was very hungry.
I felt pity on him, who was a litle boy around seven years old. His clothes were all torn. Now he was quite comfortable with me and I asked why he was crying. He told me to look at those waves in the sea and asked how I felt about them. I said they were beautiful. But he made an angry face and said he hated them, because these waves took his parents away. He was just five and since then he started wandering in this unknown city. No one loved him. These words “No one loved him” just took me into a flashback.
I suddenly recollected the dark memories of my life. I recalled that I was an orphan (孤儿) and how a couple adopted me when I was four years old. They did a lot for me, because of them today I am the engineer of the biggest shipping company. They were in a sense my true parents but I was so unfortunate that I lost them in an accident nearly three years ago. I remembered how I always wanted to thank them for what all they did for me but I couldn’t. I felt like this lttle boy was at the same situation like mine when I was a four-year old little kid.

There was a pretty strict system of segregation (种族隔离)in Atlanta. For a long, long time I could not go swimming. until there was a Negro YMCA(黑人基督教青年会). A Negro child in Atlanta could not go to any public park. I could not go to the so-called white schools. In many of the stores downtown, I couldn’t go to a lunch counter to buy a hamburger or a cup of coffee. I could not attend any of the theaters. There were one or two Negro theaters, but they didn’t get any of the main pictures. If they did get them, they got them two or three years later.
I had grown up hating not only segregation but also the cruel acts that grew out of it. I had seen police violence with my own eyes, and watched Negroes receive the most tragic injustice in the courts. I can remember the organization known as the Ku Kux Klan. It stands out white supremacy(至高无上), and it was an organization that in those days even used violent methods to preserve segregation and to keep the Negro in his place. I remember seeing the Klan actually beat Negro. I had passed spots where Negroes had been savagely lynched (用私刑). All of these things did something to my growing personality.
In my late childhood and early adolescence, two incidents happened that had a tremendous effect on my development. The first was the first empty seats at the front of the store. A young white clerk came up and murmured politely:
”I’ll be happy to wait on you if you’ll just move to those seats in the back. “
Dad immediately replied, ”There’s nothing wrong with these seats. We’re quite comfortable here. “
”Sorry, “said the clerk, ”but you’ll have to move. “
”We’ll either buy shoes sitting here, “my father said quickly, ”or we won’t buy shoes at all. "

Over the summer I moved from Texas to Missouri. This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in Missouri. I was really nervous about starting a new school and having people like me. I decided that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I bought a new outfit so the first day would be perfect.
On the first day of school, scared, yet eager to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs. My first class was geometry, but where was that? I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you new? You look lost. Do you want me to help you find your class? My name is Diane. What’s yours?” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
After exchanging names, I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. It was nice meeting you. I hope I see you again and your day goes all right.”
I said a quick thank-you and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle. I decided that this guy was popular.
A few minutes later the teacher told everyone to go find a seat and get ready for the class. I managed to get one right next to the guy. I said, “Hi, my name is April and I’m new here.” He said coldly, “Hi, I’m Johnny.” That class dragged on and on. Finally, the bell rang. I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me find it?” He looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom.

Alan and the other campers sat around the fire chewing meat chops. It would be Alan’s first night in a tent, and he was excited but a little nervous.
As they ate, the conservation officer spoke. “Much of the wildlife in this area comes out only at night. So after supper, let’s start a night watch. Volunteers will take turns to stay down here by the fire, away from the tents. Those who take part will get a chance to see a world that many of you never knew existed.”
Alan’s stomach tightened. Then he heard the officer continue, “There are no dangerous animals this close to Cape Town. Any volunteers?”
A tough-looking kid with red hair muttered something about needing a good night’s sleep. Another boy spoke up. “I’ll take a shift.” The kid who’d sat next to Alan on the bus volunteered. Alan sat tight. Then one of the girls raised her hand with a giggle. Alan frowned. If a girl could do it, he could, too. He volunteered.
A few more kids raised their hands, and then the officer explained, “This is how it works. When the rest of you go to bed in a tent, the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of watcher is to keep the fire going gently. After thirty minutes, he or she wakes the next person.”
Alan heard his voice asking, “Are you sure it’s absolutely safe?”
The officer looked at him. “The danger is minimal. We wouldn’t have taken you here otherwise. Do you still want to volunteer?” Alan nodded but felt uneasy.
Earlier that day, the officer had challenged the campers to spot animal tracks along the river. That was fun. But being alone in the dark was not. Alan’s flashlight was already fading to a dim glow because he had used it too often. Looking around, Alan thought he saw a large bird swooping (俯冲) and wondered if it was an owl. He had seen small paw prints in the sand by the river. Was the owl hunting for the creature that had made them?

How Do We Celebrate Mother’s Day
It is specially in a big family like ours that such an idea takes hold—we decided to have a special celebration of Mother’s Day. We thought it a fine idea. It made us all realize how much Mother had done for us for years and all the efforts and sacrifice that she had made for our sake.
We decided that we’d make it a great day, a holiday for all the family, and do everything we could to make Mother happy. It was our plan to make it a day just like Christmas, so we decided to decorate the house with flowers and ribbons. We got Mother to arrange the decoration, because she always does it at Christmas.
Well, after breakfast we had it arranged as a surprise for Mother that we would hire a car and take her for a beautiful drive away into the country, which would be a great enjoyment for her. We got everything arranged for the trip, and we got Mother to cut up some sandwiches and make up a sort of lunch in case we got hungry. Mother packed it all up in a basket for us ready to go into the car.
Well, when the car came to the door, it turned out that there hardly seemed as much room in it as we had supposed, because we hadn’t considered Father’s fishing basket and the rods, and it was apparent that we couldn’t all get in. Father that he could just wait at home. But of course we all felt that it would never do it, especially as we knew he would make trouble. The two girls, Anne and Mary, would gladly have stayed and helped Mother get dinner, only it seemed such a pity to, on a lovely day like this, have their new hats home to miss the beautiful day. Will and I would have dropped out, but unfortunately we wouldn’t have been any use in getting the dinner.
So in the end it was decided that Mother would stay home and just have a lovely day round the house, and get the dinner. We all drove away with three cheers for Mother, and Mother stood and watched us from the window for as long as she could see us. Father caught such big fish that he felt sure that Mother couldn’t have landed them anyway, if she had been fishing for them, and Will and I fished too, though we didn’t get so many as Father. We all had a splendid time.

    Zlateh the Goat
This winter, for Reuven, it was a bad one, and after long hesitation he decided to sell Zlateh, the goat. She was old and gave little milk. Reuven told his boy Aaron to take the goat to the butcher in town.
Aaron understood what it meant, but he had to obey his father. Leah, his mother, wiped the tears from her eyes. Aaron put on thick clothes, and took along two slices of bread with cheese to eat on the road.
While the family said good-bye to the goat, Zlateh licked Reuven’s hand and she shook her small white beard. The sun was shining when Aaron left the village. Suddenly the weather changed. In his twelve years Aaron had never experienced a snow like this. His hands were numb, and he could no longer feel his toes.
Suddenly he found a haystack (干草堆) and dragged Zlateh after him. When he reached the hay, he made out a nest for himself and the goat. The moment she smelt the hay, she began to eat. Outside, the snow continued to fall. Aaron ate his two slices of bread and cheese. Then he milked her. The milk was rich and sweet.
The outside was still completely dark. He began to talk to Zlateh. “If the snow keeps on falling like this, we may have to stay here for days,” Aaron explained.
    “Maaaa,” Zlateh bleated.
Aaron said patiently. “I need you and you need me. Isn’t that right?”
    “Maaaa.”
For three days Aaron and Zlateh stayed in the haystack. Aaron had always loved Zlateh, but in these three days he loved her more and more. She fed him with her milk and helped him keep warm.
On the morning of the fourth day Aaron heard the ringing of sleigh (雪橇) bells. The peasant who drove the sleigh pointed out the way to him — not to the butcher, but home to the village. Aaron had decided in the haystack that he would never part with Zlateh.

The school picnic day was on Sunday, and on Saturday morning I decided to ask Mum some questions. As soon as Mum took the last bite of her toast, I decided I couldn’t wait for her any longer and asked, “Mum, where is Italy?”
My mum pushed up her glasses and looked at me with her head to one side. Then she said, “Italy is an European country which is very far away from here, my love. Why do you want to know that?” I shrugged (耸肩), “That’s where Mike, the new boy in our class is from.”
She nodded and invited me to go to fetch the geography book. The book was big and Mum always kept the very big books on the bottom shelf of our bookcase. I watched as Mum flipped to the index and then to a page near the middle. “Here we go,” she said, turning the map around to show me. I let my finger meet hers where it said the word “Italy” in capital letters. According to the introduction to the country on the page, Mum helped me know more about the country.
“You know, Mum, Mike’s parents are extremely busy working in the downtown. He seldom eats regularly let alone (更不用说) have his native foods. I really want him to be very happy for his first picnic with us…” I paused and observed Mum, worried that Mum would think that it was silly and maybe a waste of money buying food only to give it away. But she didn’t. Instead, she said, “I think that’s a brilliant idea! Go and get ready, and we’ll head out on a big shopping.”

Sally had been playing football all summer. She really enjoyed running after the black and white ball across the grassy field with the other players in her bright orange uniform.
Before each game, they had a practice session. The coach showed her and her team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. She was pretty good at passing the ball, but every time she got a chance to kick the ball to the goal, it would be stopped by a player from the other team or be caught by the goalkeeper. Now the football season was almost over and she still had not scored one single goal. She really felt discouraged and wondered if she should quit football and join a different club.
“After all, I am a girl. I was not born for such a rough game,” Sally told herself. “I will try another club.” She even daydreamed that she was a member of the hip hop club and she was dancing on stage in a big auditorium with thousands of people cheering for her. She also thought about joining a different sport, like jogging or cycling. Anyway, football would be her last choice.
“Don’t give up. No one is born for the game. Use your advantage,” the coach said after Sally told him her doubt during a break between the sessions. “Most important of all, believe yourself. You can do it.”
Sally was not totally convinced but she did want to have a try. When the break was over, the coach blew his whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Sally bent down to tie up her shoes and repeated what the coach had said in her mind. “Use your advantage. Believe yourself. You can do it.”

Lucy Marlow had everything an eleven-year-old girl could possibly want except one thing:a pair of pink leather roller skates(旱冰鞋). Unfortunately, the skates cost over $1,700. Even though Lucy’s parents were very indulgent(纵容的), they thought it was too much for a toy. “It’s not a toy!” Lucy cried. “It’s transportation!” Lucy’s parents gave in and promised that she could have them only if she had straight A on her report card.
Soon at the end of the term, Lucy proudly presented her parents with the straight—A report card they’d demanded, and the next weekend, Lucy was whizzing(飞速行驶)around the neighborhood faster than anyone else with her new skates.
Then one day when Lucy went to school, she was surprised to discover there was a new girl in her class. She was sitting at the desk next to Lucy in geography and she looked very friendly.
“Hi! I’m Lucy!” Lucy whispered, “Want to go roller skating after school?”
“Hi! Mi name is Heather. But I’m afraid I can’t!” Heather said.
”Listen, if you don’t have skates, you can use my old ones, “Lucy said.” I have a brand new pair...”
The bell rang, Heather reached to pick up a pair of crutches(拐杖)under the desk and got up. Lucy was shocked to find one of her legs was missing above the knee. She gasped, “Oh, I’m so sorry! What happened?” Heather shrugged, “It was a car accident.”
That night, Lucy couldn’t sleep. She got up and turned on her laptop. There were all kinds of prosthetic limbs(假肢)for kids. Lucy wondered why Heather didn’t have one.
The next day, over lunch, Lucy asked Heather, “So, how come you don’t have a prosthetic limb?” Heather blushed. “I had one three years ago, after the accident,” she explained, “But I outgrew it. My dad lost his job so we don’t have insurance anymore. We’ve contacted a non-profit that helps kids like me, but I’m on a waiting list...” Hearing her words, Lucy fell into a short silence, remembering how she pressured her parents into buying her the pink skates.

    Pay It Forward
Ryan, whose father died of illness early, was a senior high student now. He and his mom were on their own, living in a sparsely furnished apartment. Mom lost her job because of the economic crisis and they barely got by (勉强度日).
As usual, Ryan walked into the restaurant where his mother once worked as a cashier in 2010 and queued up to pay for the lunch.
“Two forty,” Sonia, the cashier said.
“Could you charge it to my account, please? My name is Ryan Harris.”
Sonia looked through the record chart, announcing that Ryan didn’t have any credits (积分) left, and suggested he pay cash. Reaching his hand into his pocket, Ryan only took out several cents, which couldn’t cover the lunch. He smiled weakly, turned away and took a seat in the restaurant for a rest. He felt so hungry that his eyes fell on the sandwiches people around were enjoying. Before long, unexpectedly, Sonia walked up to him, bringing a lunch and putting it on his desk. Surprise deprived him of all power of speech. Sonia explained, “I paid for it. And I bought you some credits to last you through the month. I know what it’s like to go without lunch.”
Soon Ryan learned the truth. Sonia went to the same senior high in 2010 like him and used to have lunch in the same restaurant every day. One day, she stayed in line, waiting to buy her lunch, but was told that she didn’t have enough credits. So she left, empty-handed. Just as she thought she would go hungry, an amazing cashier brought her lunch and a card reading “Pay it forward and help someone else in need”.
Sonia told Ryan the amazing cashier changed her life forever, and she was the reason why Sonia decided to start working here, meanwhile handing Ryan the card. Ryan promised that he would pay the money back to her one day. But Sonia insisted, “We are human. And we have to be nice to each other. You needn’t pay me back; you pay it forward!” Ryan could not believe his good fortune, enjoyed the lunch and went to school.

A Community Puts on a Dazzling Display of Support
In Sara’s family, putting up Christmas lights was always a big day of celebration. Every year, just after Thanksgiving Day, her dad Anthony, 70, would visit local stores to check out new decorations and then excitedly string lights and hang decorations in and out of the house. The dazzling (绚烂的) display made him a hit in the community.
On 2020 Christmas Eve, as usual, the whole house twinkled with lights, and gifts were piled under the tree. While everyone was looking forward to enjoying another Christmas together as a family, Sara, got a call: the whole family had tested positive for COVID-19. Their Christmas celebration had to be canceled.
At first, everyone’s symptoms (症状) seemed manageable. But right after the new year, Anthony started having trouble breathing and unfortunately passed away two weeks later, though the rest had recovered from COVID-19. The following week of planning the funeral was the worst for Sara and her husband, Frank. Sorrow left them doubled over in pain. The saddest of all was that no neighbours attended her father’s funeral. Only the twinkling Christmas lights at night brought them a little bit joy. The lights were one of the last moments they had of their beloved father, so they kept them up.
One morning in February, Sara received an envelope. “Take your Christmas lights down! It’s Valentine’s Day!!!” the unsigned letter read. Sara looked at the paper in shock. Then she got angry. She could have bottled up that anger, but she decided to write about it instead. She logged on to a local community Facebook group and shared the letter. She ended the post with this: “We all had a tough year. Be kind to people because you never know what they are going through.”

    Smile for the Camera
He had beautiful features, half-Arab and half-African: large almond-shaped brown eyes and a delicate nose. His hair was black, cut short. For a refugee (难民), he was in good shape physically, though dirty and barefoot.
He stood in front of my camera and stared. “You will find my parents,” he ordered. “I can’t promise,” I replied and focused the camera on his face, “Smile.” “Then I can’t smile.” I snapped a photo of the boy and wrote down his vital information: Maiga Fotana, age 10; his parents’ names; his village. “Bye,” I said when I finished and he walked away silently.
Until sundown, I shot pictures of hundreds of children. We would post their pictures wherever we could in the war-affected country, hoping someone would recognize a little face and come to the camp to claim the child.
The next morning, Maiga was first in line. “Did you find my parents?” he asked. “No,” I said, “I just took your picture yesterday. I haven’t even developed it yet.”
“My parents will be looking for me, so I need to take another picture,” he said. I loaded my camera. “One photo is enough,” I said, “We’ll make copies and post them all over. Besides, I don’t have enough film (胶卷). I can’t take two photos of everyone!” He drew close to me. “We won’t tell others,” he whispered. He winked (眨眼示意). I shook my head. “Bye,” he said.
The next day, he came and tilted (倾斜) his head, “I want to help you,” he said, “I can write names.” He took his place next to me. Maiga had beautiful hand-writing, square and even (方正匀称). He spoke to each child with authority as he wrote down their information. As each child left, Maiga said, “Bye.”
One day, hundreds of people came to our camp. They held photos in their hands with hope in their wide dark eyes. They strained their necks to see through the crowds. They called out names.
All the aid workers gathered to watch as adults and children ran to each other, crying and embracing. I saw family after family brought together, and I felt delighted and moved as well.

Two little girls, Addie and Gracie, neatly dressed as they were going for a pleasant walk and pretty lunch-baskets filled with the nicest of things, started out for a walk up the canyon(峡谷). There was a good road for long distance. Then it branched off right and left. The trees grew taller, the bushes thicker and more twisted and they felt as if they were away off in a little world of their own. How nice it was! Birds came close overhead, and they saw several live squirrels. After gathering a great many flowers and eating lunch, and having had enough walking for a while, they began telling certain fairy stories in which the parties all lived out in the woods.
The day wore along until afternoon, when the canyon began to grow dark very fast. “Do you think we’d better start home?”asked Addie.“I guess it’s early yet. But if you wish we might walk slowly down a little way”, said Gracie. With a show of some reluctance, Addie gathered her treasures together, and they started at a leisurely pace, which somehow was gradually accelerated without the apparent notice.
These children had gone farther up the canyon than they had realized. The many charms had attracted them along and they didn’t feel tired for a long while. Suddenly, a low rumble was heard that increased and seemed to be rapidly coming in their direction.
“It’s raining! Are there any caves?” “Only way up on the side.” “Let’s take hold of hands and run!” “We’d have to drop our flowers.” “I don’t care. Hurry!” Away they went, the wind driving the rain right in their faces. The pretty hats were dripping. The light pink dresses hung straight down, and their shoes were sopping wet. “Do you think our parents will come after us when they know it’s storming up here?”
    Addie began to cry.

I was eight the first time I played checkers. I’ve played about a thousand games since then, but none was so memorable as that first one.
It was icy January in Kansas. When the snowstorm hit, cutting off our power, we were thrown into darkness though it was still around noon. No heat, no light. The winter became terrible for everyone-especially for me and my six year old brother.
Methodically Grandpa gathered up his winter coat. Scarf and gloves. and disappeared into snow. Several minutes later, he returned, carrying much wood. Glancing casually at my brother and me, he said, “Come on boys. Time to build a fire. ”
But the fire wasn’t enough to sustain the attention of two young boys. “Maybe,” Grandpa remarked, carefully considering the situation. “we could do something I used to do as a boy. Let’s go camping.”
My brothers and I looked at each other in amazement.
”Get your sleeping bags, pillows and stuffed animals, and meet me back here.“
It took us only minutes to gather our sleeping gear. When we returned Grandpa had rearranged the furniture, clearing an open space in front of the fire. in short order, we had a fine campground.
“Now then” Grandpa began, unfolding a strange looking game board, “who’s up for a little game of checkers?” “What are checkers?” my brother and I asked.
“Never played, eh? Well. it’s time you boys learned,” Grandpa said.
For the next hour or so. Grandpa coached us on the fine art of playing checkers. I became a fair player after losing four games in a row. Then I defeated Grandpa. When I asked him if he’d let me win, he merely winked (眨眼 and set the board up for the next game Afterward. Grandpa used his old guitar to sing us some campfire songs to which we sing along.

Last year at Christmas time, my wife, three children and I were on our way from Paris to Nice. Somehow everything went wrong. Our hotels were “tourist traps” and our rented car broke down. On Christmas Eve, when we checked into a dirty hotel in Nice, there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts.
It was raining and cold when we went out to eat. We found a small restaurant poorly decorated for the holiday. Only five tables in the restaurant were taken. There were two German couples, two French families, and an American sailor, by himself. They were eating in stony silence except the sailor. He was writing a letter, and a half-smile lighted his face. In the corner a piano player was listlessly (无精打采地) playing Christmas music.
All of us were interrupted by an old French flower woman through the front door. She had a worn overcoat and her old shoes were wet. Carrying her basket of flowers, she went from one table to another. No one bought any. Exhausted and sad, she sat down at a table.
The sailor finished his meal and got up to leave. Putting on his coat, he walked over to the flower woman’s table.
“Merry Christmas,” he said, smiling and picking out a handful of flowers. “How much are they?”
    “Two francs, sir.”
The sailor put a twenty franc note in the woman’s hand.
“I don’t have change, sir,” she said. “I’ll get some from the waiter.”
“No, ma’am,” said the sailor, leaning over and kissing the ancient cheek. “This is my Christmas present for you.”

“Bye, Mom; bye, Dad; don’t worry. We’ll take care of everything!” Carly waved as her parents drove off. They were headed for a well-deserved vacation from their candy store, and Carly had promised them she’d be able to run it by herself. Her parents didn’t quite agree, however, so they compromised by having Carly’s Aunt Maggie come over and help, who was called “uniquely creative”.
Maggie blew into the store like a swirling whirlwind and asked for an immediate start. Carly showed her where the family made some of their own candy, such as fresh fudge(软糖), cotton candy, and ice cream. They had lots of delicious flavors to choose from. Aunt Maggie looked them over and tasted a
bite of the chocolate fudge. “It’s delicious, right?” Carly asked confidently. “It’s good, but … unoriginal,” replied her aunt. “We can do better.”
Before Carly could question what Maggie meant, the woman had gone to investigate the kitchen. Moments later, she came back with her hands full of items. “Brussels sprouts(豆芽菜)?” Carly gave her aunt a puzzled look. Aunt Maggie couldn’t be serious!
But she was. The woman’s hands were busy chopping and then adding small pieces of the vegetable into the vanilla fudge batter(糊状物). Carly’s eyes grew wide as she watched her aunt mix it together. “Aunt Maggie, I really don’t think that’s a good idea,” said Carly. “No, you’re quite right,” agreed Maggie.
“ But that’s definitely an ice cream flavor. The cold will perfectly balance out the spicy sauce!”
Carly shook her head in dismay. She couldn’t imagine what her parents would think upon their return. Her aunt whistled a happy tune as she continued to mix strange candy combinations: lemonade with pickle(泡菜)juice, barbeque-flavored candy, and lima bean(利马豆)ice cream.

    18.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In our home, there are two coins apparently pressed by something heavy. One is in my father’s hand, the other mine. Both of them remind us of the history…
Doing things with my father was always fun due to his rich imagination. I don’t recall a time when Dad stood across my path; he always walked beside me, guiding me with his own steps. When, at 10, I announced that I was going to Africa to bring back wild animals, my mother and sisters pointed out my age, the problems of transportation and all such ordinary and unimportant facts.
But not Dad. He brought home books about Africa, train and boat schedules, and even some iron bars which we used to build cages for the animals I was to bring back. When the departure day was approaching and I was becoming anxious, my father brought home a newspaper that told of an accident on the railroad that was to take me to Baltimore. This postponed my trip and, by the time the train tracks were repaired, he and I were off on a new and more exciting project.
When a neighbor’s dog killed my dog Bounce, I was determined to kill that dog. I thought about it day after day, almost making myself ill. “Let’s get it done,” my father stated unexpectedly in a whisper one evening. I followed him, to discover that he had tied the dog. He gave me a gun, and then stepped back for me to do the work. The dog and I looked at each other. He shook his tail to express friendship. Suddenly the gun was too heavy for me to hold and it dropped to the ground. The dog came up and kissed my hand. The three of us walked home together, the dog jumping in front. No word was ever said about what had happened. None was needed.
When President Harding died, the funeral train was scheduled to pass through a town about 20 miles from ours. I wanted desperately to go and see this train, but Mother pointed out that there would be school the next day and that it would be a long trip. That ended the discussion.

Every single one of us has a different story. It is easy to judge others based on what we witness for a brief amount of time, but this is not what we should do.
Andre Owen is a policeman who works for the Sussex Police. He is a kind-hearted young officer. He is always working hard and devotes himself to his duty. And on one particular day, his shift (轮班) was proving to be one of the tough days. That day, he started to work at around 7:05 am. It was such an early start for his duty that he had no time for breakfast. He was called to a serious incident shortly after he began to be on duty. The incident was in Brighton, which meant he had to go to Oxford to take care of the matter. It was a long drive there, which took him about two hours to get there. The matter was very hard to deal with, but he managed to settle it successfully.
After his visit to Oxford, Andre Owen drove his way back, only to find another incident down the road. The accident involved a family who needed help, but the traffic was so crowded that they couldn’t get through. As a result, the officer had to stop traffic to get them to safety. At the end of it, he had 45 minutes left in his shift but he still had to drive back for two more hours.
It was such a difficult day and he almost did not get to have time to eat. At lunchtime, he finally had an opportunity to get food, so he went to the nearest fast food restaurant to buy himself lunch. Just like any other customers there, the policeman was patiently waiting for his food to arrive. A lady eating her own food, kept staring at him while he was waiting.

My little sister, Donna, turned six, and she started copying whatever I did — every move!
“What are you doing?” she asked my friend Maya and me one Saturday morning.
“We’re making earrings,” Maya said, pointing to a photo in the craft page of her magazine.
Donna plopped (扑通) down next to us at the table. “May I make one too?” “Um...” I paused.
“Sure!” Maya said. Donna squeezed in so close to me that I could hardly see what I was doing.
“Can you give me a little more room? You are blocking me from the beads.” I said a little angrily.
“I’m just trying to see what you’re doing.” Donna said.
“Well, you don’t need to see exactly what I’m doing.” I told her. “You can make your own design just over there, Donna.”
“I am!” she said. She was using the same colors of beads and string and everything that I was using.
Having finished the earrings, Maya suggested we get her guitar to make up songs for our band.
“An excellent idea!” I said. “Let’s go to the backyard where we can have some privacy.”
When Donna didn't say anything, I thought she must have understood what I meant. Nevertheless, 10 minutes later, she showed up before me.
“Sorry I’m late, but I couldn't find my tambourine (铃鼓).” said Donna. “It was in the basket that my Hello Kitty was sleeping in. Isn’t that so funny? Maybe, we should invite Kitty to be in our band!”
“Our band?” I asked. “Since when is this our band? You’re constantly following me like a shadow, and I’m so tired of it. Please leave me alone, OK?”

    参考答案:
    1.Paragraph 1:
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap (包裹) the coat in Christmas paper. She wrote “To Bobby, from Santa Claus” on it, after which she drove me over to Bobby’s house, explaining I was officially one of the Santa’s helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobby’s house, and I took a deep breath, dashing for his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I put the Christmas present down, pounded on his doorbell and then I hid in the car with my grandma.
    Paragraph2:
Grandma and I waited breathlessly for Bobby Decker’s front door to open. Finally, it opened. Out went Bobby Decker. Seeing the coat in the bag, he glanced around and looked quite astonished. Seconds later, he called his mother to go out for a check. Hearing them say “Thanks” to Santa Clause, I felt very proud of what I had done. At that moment, I even made up my mind to be Santa’s helper forever. It was on that night that I realized the truth that a person who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas present under the tree.

For the first time I saw that if I would have been married then my son would have been innocent like him. He was full of tears, hugged me and kissed me. He told no one has ever loved him like that after his parents’ death.

I remember riding with him another day when he accidentally drove past a stop sign. A policeman pulled up to the car and said:" All right, boy, pull over and let me see your license." My father instantly retorted:" Let me make it clear to you that you aren't talking to a boy. If you persist in referring to me as boy, I will be forced to act as if I don't hear a word you are saying." I felt so embarrassed that I couldn’t do anything but sit there, keeping my body unmoved and holding back my tears. What I wanted to do is just to make friends with them. I couldn’t figure out why they laughed at me. But one thing was certain, that is, I must removed myself from their presence. Therefore, I wasn’t ready to leave until they walked far away.
Before I was ready to go home, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. I felt very strange since I was new here without making any friends. Turning around, I saw Diane who came up to me with a warm smile on her face. She said she would walk together with me. What a kind and friendly girl she was, I thought. Hearing a noise, Alan froze, feeling something was there in the darkness. A ripple of fear crept up on him as he cast a glance there. Heart beating wildly, Alan made his way to the noise, with both of his legs trembling uncontrollably. A closer look convinced him that it was only a rabbit, which quickly disappeared in the dark. In relief, he felt the gentle breeze rubbing his face. The moon shedding its silver light on the woods, Alan was greeted by the sound of birds and insects. Enveloped by fragrant air, he felt as if in the wonderland.
The next morning, the officer asked for reports. Other campers bragged about their adventure in the dark—how they ran into some “horrible” creatures and bravely scared them off. The officer, wearing a doubtful look, offered no comments. When it was Alan’s turn, he told the truth that there were no scary animals but breathtaking scenery to be explored. Aaron’s family and their neighbors had searched for the boy and the goat but had found no trace of them during the storm. Then came the fourth day. Aaron’s mother cried for him; his father remained sad. Suddenly one of the neighbors came running to their house with the news that Aaron and Zlateh were coming up on the road. There was great joy in the family. Aaron told them how he had found the stack of hay and how Zlateh had fed him with her milk. Aaron’s mother kissed and hugged Zlateh and gave her a special treat of chopped carrots and potato peels, which Zlateh gobbled up hungrily. Nobody ever again thought of selling Zlateh. Once in a while, Aaron would ask her, “Zlateh, do you remember the three days we spent together?” And Zlateh would lick his hand, shake her white bearded head and come out with the single sound which expressed all her thoughts and all her love.

With all the money I saved carefully put in my pocket, I rushed to meet my smiling Mum at the front gate. We went to stands of fresh fruits and vegetables, selecting some for making pizza. Proudly looking at the products, Mum and I drove back home in high spirits. I could picture the perfect pizza which my mother was expert in cooking and the new boy's amazed face.
We gathered on the grass on Sunday morning and I saw the Italian boy immediately. I waved my hand to draw Mike’s attention. He looked around and finally made sure that he was my target. Shy and quiet, he approached me with a light-hearted pace. I patted the place beside me, gestured him to sit down and unpacked his native food. He hesitated at first but later focused his eyes on my sincere face and gave me a broad smile. What a beautiful day it was! We enjoyed the delicious pizza together and came to understand each other by sharing different experiences. No one would resist the sincere kindness.

Then I noticed Maiga standing at the edge of the group, watching. Tears poured from his eyes and his mouth was parted in a silent cry. I rushed to him and he sobbed into my chest. “They’ll come. It’s just the first day!” I hugged him and he melted against me. It must have been months since someone had held him this tight. I let him hold on until he was ready to let go. In the following days, Maiga was usually quiet and withdrawn. Sometimes, though, he was animated, almost happy, and he talked about his family, his village and his school.

Two weeks later, an aid worker came with a man who looked just like Maiga. “Maiga!” I could barely whisper the name. Maiga was busy writing names. “Maiga!” The familiar sound made him look up. His mouth dropped open and his pen slipped out. He squeaked as he stood up and threw himself into his father’s open arms. I watched with tears all over my cheeks. Maiga then smiled at me and said eagerly, “You will miss me!” I nodded, trying to stop my sobs. “I’ll definitely miss you!” he shouted. I wanted to take a photo of his smile, but no film could have captured the happiness I saw on his face.

Then the sailor headed for our table with the flowers in his hand. He picked out a red flower and placed it on our table. “Merry Christmas!” he greeted us in a cheerful voice. Before we could say “Thank you”, he went to other tables. In an instant, everyone in the room was presented with flowers. 17.Carly looked up as the bell over the front door rang, and in came three boys. They ordered strawberry ice screams. “Oh, how dull,” laughed Maggie. “I insist you try something new!” She offered them a Brussels sprout fudge, a barbeque-flavored candy and a hot sauce ice cream. Sensing their hesitation, Maggie added the items were her treat. Confused, but too polite to argue, the boys left the store. “There go our customers. They will tell everyone how weird our candy is, and nobody will shop here!” Carly mumbled to herself, propping her chin up in her hand and picturing her parents’ scolding her for ruining the fame of the shop.
Thoughts brought back by the bell, Carly saw a big crowd, including the three boys. They were back, but this time there was a crowd of kids swarming the store with them, who couldn’t wait to order and take a bite of the new specials. In the hustle and bustle, Carly and her aunt spared no effort to serve all the customers—more lining up at the door every minute. What a scene! When they finally sent the last customer out of the door, they sighed with relief. “Innovation works miracles!” Carly exclaimed joyfully, “You’re a genius helper!” Grinning proudly, Aunt Maggie winked and gave her a high five.

But when the day arrived, Dad did not forget. He came to me and, in a voice as near a whisper as his nature would allow, said, “Jim, boy, it’s time to see the funeral train.” We drove along to the town without talking much. When we came to the railroad station, a half dozen people were talking in soft tones and looking down at the tracks. Suddenly, the funeral train was coming slowly.
    Paragraph 2 :
Dad put two pennies into my hand and asked me to put them on the rails. I did as told and stepped back to hold his hand as the train went past. I could hardly breathe, and so exciting were the sight and sound. After the train left, I got back the two pennies from the tracks. Dad put one in his pocket and I kept the other. For years, Dad and I carried the coins pressed by the weight of history. And the knowledge of what we shared made me feel very close to him.

It was at that moment that the woman decided to come up to him to say something. “While you’re in here stuffing your face, there are criminals that need catching out there,” she said. What the woman said hurt Owen severely. He was tired and hungry, and he had to hear those words from her. Although the man was not in a good mood after the incident, he did not make any explanation or answered back to the woman who easily judged a man in uniform who was only trying to get his lunch.
However, Owen decided to share something on the Internet. In his post, he said he wanted to tell the lady who scolded him for buying food on duty that he had been working since 7:05 am that morning, not even for toilet break. His shift was not easy, especially on the particular day, and the unkind remark he got made it all even worse. He felt sad for someone who was quick to judge a person without really knowing the person.

20.Hearing what I said, Donna got a super-surprised look. Then tears started welling up in her eyes and before I could say a word, Donna ran away. Gazing at the little figure disappearing from sight, I regretted what I had said. I didn’t mean to hurt her at all. How I wished I could take back those words right away! Realizing I never put myself in her shoes, I made up my mind to make an apology to her and find a way to make her happy.
I came up with a plan that I hoped would help. My friend Maya and I looked around and found Donna very soon. I was walking towards her, holding the kitten Charlie in front of my face. When I got close, I copied the kitten: “Hi, Donna! Your sister says she’s really sorry for the way she treated you just now. I want to play the tambourine in your band, but I’m not good at it with my paws. So I’m hoping you can give me a hand.” Luckily, Donna smiled and agreed to join us. I said to myself, “Never will I treat Donna that way, no matter what happens.”
