My adventure short story took place in Nepal, where I did the Mohare Danda Trek — which was no easy feat; however, in my opinion, it is truly one of the best hiking trails in the world. The Mohare Danda is one of Nepal’s newest treks, opened in 2010 as an Eco-trek to help support and develop the Parbat and Myagdi districts.
I’ve always enjoyed such kind of hikes as my friends and I conquer one destination after another. As you gaze upon the mountain peaks, interact with locals, and take in the nature that surrounds you, it’s hard not to feel immense gratitude for such adventures. This is particularly true when we reached the top of Mohare Danda at 3,313 meters (10,869feet) and realized just how far we’d come.
It was a stunning hike, though my first day got off to a difficult start as I found myself violently ill. Ascending(爬升)higher and higher, sweat pouring down my face and my backpack threatening to pull me to the ground, I stopped constantly to gasp for breath and throw up quite a bit — until we reached the high altitude tea house where we’d be staying the night. The accommodation was rough, to say the least, which was a small family-run hotel with squat toilets, spiders, and no showers.
While the group went in for tea, I laid on the ground, nearly crying from the physical pain from the challenging hike and discomfort from the sickness. At that moment, I truly didn’t think I could do it. But then I opened my eyes to the beauty that surrounded me— scattered wild flowers all over the mountains, feasting yaks and buffaloes, high-altitude villages and the stunning terrain of the Annapurna Himalayas, which were the type of beauty you truly can’t find anywhere else —and realized that if I gave up now I’d never forgive myself.
The hotel owner was very kind, who brought me warm water and some medicine. He also suggested that I bring some oxygen just in case, and I did so, which turned out to be life-saving.

One day, when I was reading, I received a call from the principal (校长) of my high school to invite me to give a talk as a representative of alumni association (校友会). He asked me to speak to the group the next morning. I felt so honored to have got such an opportunity and immediately replied yes. But after the call, I became nervous and panicky.
The whole night, I polished my speech again and again, and practiced before a mirror until I could deliver the speech fluently. Even though I had made full preparations, I could not sleep with great anxiety. What if words failed me and didn’t attract audience at all? What if I forgot the words in the middle of the speech?... I was hesitating to call the principal with regret and tell him that I could not come. Finally, I gathered some courage to go. I thought, “If I miss this opportunity, surely the school will never invite me again to any of their programs.”
Anyway, I reached the school on time. Before giving the talk, my whole body was trembling. When my turn came and I started speaking, my heartbeat increased and my mouth went dry. I wasn’t even able to read the written speech properly. I was not aware of where I was standing and what I was reading. I just managed to finish the speech in a low voice. That was the day when I realized my biggest weakness, Public Speaking Anxiety.

During the past two years, I felt down from time to time, especially when I stayed indoors. To get out of the house, I decided to teach myself how to skate again even though it had been more than 30 years since I had been on the ice. Little did I know, I would also be teaching myself how to rise to the challenges I’d soon face in life, too.
I dug out my old figure skates, but they didn’t work. So I ordered a new pair of skates and found a place to get them sharpened. I assumed it would be easy to pick up from where I had left off, so I reserved our ice time. Armed and ready, I was awake before the online reservation system opened to secure spots at my neighborhood rink (滑冰场). I even convinced my son to join me for my first go.
Filled with fear, I estimated there was a five-centimeter drop down from the walking ledge (台子) to the ice and nothing nearby to grab onto in order to keep my balance. My son was already circling around but skated over to offer his arm for support.
I climbed down, one skate at a time and my leg shook slightly when both feet landed on the ice.
“Can I hang onto you for the first few minutes?” I asked my son nervously. I took baby steps but I had forgotten how to glide (滑行). Eager to see how far I could go, I let go of my son’s arm.
With great efforts, I began to do slow laps, inching ahead with my skates and staying close to the rink boards.
I avoided falling on my first attempt but as I walked home silently with my son, I wondered whether I should quit. Fear had held me back and I hadn’t given it my all.
“You used to skate so well, what happened?” asked my son.
“Life got in the way.”

After filling out sixty applications, going through three interviews, and winning just one offer, I took what I could get: to teach in a remote area in western New Jersey. I kept reminding myself that I could do what I had always dreamed of doing since I was fourteen: teaching English.
At the school, I worked very hard, only taking time off to eat and sleep. I got along very well with my students who were only seven or eight years younger than me.
But I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love for the written words, while the students preferred to throw paper planes and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.
In college, I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore students’ bad behavior. So I did, feeling confident that, as the textbooks had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounded reasonable, but the textbooks evidently ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable.
By the time the principal, who was always ready to fire bad teachers, came into the classroom to observe my class, the students exhibited very little good behavior. After he settled down in the back of the room, the boys in the class were still making animal noises, hitting each other and the girls filed (修剪) their nails or read magazines.
I just pretended nothing wrong was happening. I went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. The principal seemed to be growing more and more annoyed. After twenty minutes, he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I only felt mildly comforted that I powered through the rest of the class without crying.

“Nine-eighty-four for a urgency call please. You are heading to Maroubra for a child of unknown age, address to follow, over.” Must be a big job, I thought as I moved quickly to the radio. I sat in the front seat of the ambulance and took the microphone. My heart jumped. The possibilities of a young child surviving falling from a height were low at best. Then I gestured to the driver that we would have to head off.
“Take a left here,” my partner Amanda said. “The second street on your left is a lane way.” The driver threw the ambulance around the corner and saw a man waving his hands. He indicated that we should head down the lane way. Then I saw a woman with her arms in the air. There were people along three blocks leading to the address, signaling us in. It had now been nine minutes since we received the call and we travelled about 15 kilometers. It was a miracle(奇迹) that we got here so quickly.
The driver came to a sudden stop beside the crowd. Amanda and I got off the ambulance immediately. I saw a boy lying on the grass beside the footpath. The boy’s face was white and looked dead. A woman standing behind the boy was his mother. I could see the wide-eyed scare on her face. There must be 15 people standing silently around. All eyes were glued to us as we approached.
I saw a young man going down on his knees and performing external cardiac massage(体外心脏按摩) on the boy. Later I learned that the young man was a medical student. “Two, three, four, five,” he counted as he pressed the small chest—but a failed attempt. There was no sign of life. “Let me try,” Amanda said, giving the boy mouth-to-mouth resuscitation(复苏) and heart massage. About two minutes later, there were signs of life and the cardiac monitor showed the heart had electrical activity. I took a big breath in and out.
Para. l: We immediately put the boy in the ambulance.

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容及所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Christmas was approaching, and I had no idea what to get for my wife. We had just moved to Italy. Donna was away attending an important meeting, so I had the rest of the week to figure out what to get her as a Christmas gift before she got back.
My house partner while Donna was away was her cat, Princess, who was everything that her name implied. I was keeping Princess indoors in our new home until she became familiar with the place and then planned to slowly introduce her to the great outdoors. Princess had other ideas, and slipped out of the house as I was bringing in some food. By the time I had turned around and gone back out of the door to look for her, she was gone.
Donna would be back in a few days and it would ruin Christmas for both of us if Princess was not back by then, safe and sound. Donna had already excitedly told me over the phone that she had found several fun toys and delicious snacks for Princess as Christmas gifts. She couldn’t wait to get back and wrap them up.
I was in big trouble. I had to find Princess as soon as possible. So, I made up a poster of the cat that I personally drew because I couldn’t find a photo of her anywhere. I was sure my wife had hundreds on her phone, but I didn’t dare ask her for one. Perhaps because my poster were not so clear, soon people in the area came to my house with several homeless cats. Though Princess wasn’t among them, I let them stay in our yard. I figured Donna would understand.
Donna’s happy daily calls continued, as did my daily searches for Princess. I still hadn’t mentioned anything about the disappearance to my wife. Finally, the day came for my wife to return.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成篇完整的短文。
I was looking forward to my son Scott’s visit and our morning trip to the Collingwood Flea Market. It was a typical November day, cold in the shade and warm in the sun. A perfect day for outdoor shopping.
We walked up and down looking at the many things, but nothing called out to me. After an hour of walking with the wind blowing in the air, we decided to call it quits and go home for lunch.
On our way, I was rubbing my cold hands together when I noticed that my engagement ring was missing. When I informed Scott of the missing ring he couldn’t believe it either. We searched the car and I searched my clothes, too. No ring! It must have fallen off my finger in the cold.
We headed back to the flea market and parked in the same spot as before. We checked that area, and then began walking up and down the maze of tables while looking at the ground. Leaves blew in the wind and people were everywhere. Hundreds of feet passed by and I began getting lightheaded as I intently looked at the ground, I was afraid of the thought of someone finding my ring and wearing it home, not knowing the emotional value and its history. It was an expensive engagement ring my now dead partner had given me twenty years earlier. I had never lost or misplaced it in all that time... until now.
We gave up, cold and hungry. I was angry at myself for having lost the ring. We drove home as I tried to hold back my tears.
After lunch, which I had no appetite for, we decided to return to the flea market. If we were going to find it, it was now or never. Time was of the importance. And so, for the third time we parked the car in the same spot. Because it was later in the day, most of the vendors had packed up and left.

8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On the way back from work every evening, more often than not there would be a homeless man standing at the exit of the freeway. He looked to be in his late 40s but was probably a lot younger. He had shoulder length straight black hair and a short beard, and he was of average stature.
His eyes were what struck me the most about him, they were brown and they had a sparkle. Like an inside light that was beaming out of his eyes. His eyes, I thought, represented the man in general. People say they can talk a lot from a person’s eyes. It was certainly true in his case. He always waved at every car, he was always happy and smiling and sometimes almost dancing.
Every day after work I would remember to gather any spare change, and put it aside to give to him if I saw him. A feeling of joy would come over me every time I saw him, while coming off the ramp. He had that effect.
I’d quickly roll down my window and give him the coins. Occasionally the red light would be on for a minute and we would ask each other about our day. His answer would always be the same, “I’m blessed!”
I knew what his answer was going to be every time, yet I would still ask. It amazed me that even in his situation of being homeless he was so positive, and his answer would remind me of how blessed I was. A single mother of four amazing kids, with a place to call home and with a job to provide for my kids.
Then one day I was called into my boss’s office and was told that I was being laid off due to the economy. A feeling of worry overcame me, and for the rest of that day all I could think of was “How am I going to provide for my kids, how am I going to pay rent, what am I going to do?”

Needless to say that on my way home that day I was very sad and upset.

9.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The most delightful and unusual thing I paid for in the last summer was a pair of ducklings. One day I spotted a friend’s photo of two tiny golden ducklings in her living room. I message d her immediately. She was fostering(照料) the baby ducks for a farm. As the farm explains on its website, you can adopt the newborns and parent them until they grow into their “adulthood” when you could choose to keep them or take them back. For $165, the farm would bring us everything we needed to foster ducklings and also an activity for Leo. This program would provide us with what we’d been lacking: joy and fellowship. “Were getting ducklings!” I proudly announced.
About 10 days later, a man from the farm arrived at our home and handed over a shoebox housing a pair of baby ducks. Leo and I held them in our hands, each one a tiny, almost weightless parcel of silky gold. Leo immediately cast himself as their father, and the ducklings accepted the role happily, waddling(摇摆) at his feet and slipping on our hardwood floors. Leo kissed them on their beaks(喙)and they bit his lip slightly, which he concluded meant they loved him.
After a few weeks, the ducklings tripled in size, and the fairytale took a turn. Much as we loved them, it was time to make the choice. They were about to enter adulthood, and it was getting inconvenient to keep the many longer. It was only then that I realized I didn’t know what would happen to them back at the farm. I called the farm, and I was told that actually our ducklings would likely serve as a“wonderful supper”.

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My ten-year-old self loved summertime. The best part of summer was the community pool. Everyone was there.
We didn’t have a care in the world. Our biggest concern was which one of us could hold her breath underwater the longest. We didn’t care what we looked like or who was cool. I never once thought about how I looked in a swimsuit or if my hair looked good. I was aware that I wasn’t super-thin like some of the other girls I saw, but I didn’t care.
And then one day, I was taking my turn on the diving board with all the other kids. I jumped in, floated freely to the top and swam over to the ladder to make my way out of the pool. I noticed a girl standing at the top of the ladder, so I swam slowly, giving her time to move. I didn’t know her. She looked cute and thin.
But instead of moving, a strange thing happened. This girl leaned over the pool and said to me, “They don’t allow beached (搁浅的) whales in this pool.”
Beached whales? I soon realized that I was the beached whale. Suddenly, my cool blue swimsuit didn’t cover enough. I got out of the pool quickly and wrapped my towel around my body, feeling like I was going to throw up. From that moment on, I was aware of my size.
Clothes became a horrible dream, and I struggled through my teen years and into adulthood. I cried over clothes that didn’t fit. My heart had always hated the little girl by the pool, who took the confidence out of my life until I got my daughter, Lisa.
One day I dressed my little girl in beautiful clothes and put a bow (蝴蝶结) on her head, but she refused because she liked to be comfortable. Is society interested in comfort? However, when I stared at her, I suddenly realized how beautiful she was, even though she was covered in mud.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
When Lisa was ten, I came across a picture of myself when I was ten and I showed it to her.

参考答案:
1.In my hundreds of hiking trips, I have never experienced such a difficult situation as now. I have suffered from physical pain, and my willpower has gradually been worn away. However, the kindness of the hotel owner has made me feel like a spring breeze, which has further strengthened my determination to persist in hiking. After hearing that I wanted to continue, the boss and other people in the hotel expressed their support, but in order to ensure my safety, they were willing to continue with me, so we formed a small team and began to march towards the top of the mountain.
At this moment, the sun was falling, and the top of the mountain was golden under the rising sun. Looking at this beautiful scene, I suddenly felt that all the hardships I had experienced before had disappeared at this moment. I had achieved my goals and aspirations. Suddenly, I felt a bit dizzy. I staggered back for a moment, and supported me forcefully with both hands behind my back. I was the hotel owner, and perhaps there was nothing more satisfying for me than now. I had the sense of conquest to climb the top of the mountain, and the sense of fulfillment to be accompanied by friends. These are all my most precious assets.

After my speech, I met with the principal and explained what happened to me. Instead of blaming me, he comforted me warmly. He told me that this happened to everyone. Even great speakers faced the same things when they started. He encouraged me to practice more and not to give up. And he even suggested that I come again next time. With his encouragement, I made up my mind to overcome the problem of public speaking anxiety. I was greatly convinced that I could do better next time.
Around one month later, I was invited to give another speech. After a month of practice, this time I was feeling comfortable and confident. It turned out that my speech was appreciated by the principal as well as the teachers because I was able to get my idea across to them. They encouraged me and praised my efforts, which made me very happy. After delivering it successfully, I became more confident. I was grateful to this opportunity because it made me realize that everything is possible if we have the courage to take the first step.

My son always encouraged me. He believed that I could do it. And he said that I was his pride. As time went by, I got better and better at skating.

However, my eyes went wide open when I found it was a letter with several suggestions about my teaching, one of which was highlighted in red: An educator should get the students actively engaged.
I made up my mind to make a change. In the next class, when the students seemed to expect another boring English lesson, I cleared my throat and announced, “Boys and girls, let me hear your own voice about my literature lesson.” Suddenly, a complete silence fell over. Flashing a smile, I continued, “Anything you’d like to say!” At this, the class immediately came to life.

We went to the manager’s office and told him my sad story. I left my name and phone number hoping that someone would find the ring and turn it in. After that, I took a deep breath and we set out on our mission. It was much warmer and not as windy. I took the left side of the paths and Scott the right. We walked and walked and walked. There was broken glass that shone like a diamond ring. There were shiny soda can tabs that caught our eye. There were silver coins.
Finally, we reached the far end of the flea market. There were a number of empty tables because the vendors had already packed up and left. And there, under one of those tables, I spotted a shiny little circle in the dirt. I shouted to Scott that I had found the ring! He said it was unbelievable! Yes, it was truly a miracle. Three hours after I lost it, with hundreds of people walking by, my ring waited for the person meant to find it... me!

Needless to say that on my way home that day I was very sad and upset. Still processing what had happened, I didn’t even remember to look for my spare change and keep it ready like I usually did. I wasn’t feeling the joy as I got off the ramp where the homeless man would be. Yet there he was as always, as I turned the ramp. He set his eyes on me, while still smiling and waving at others. I’d hoped to catch the green light, but I missed it.
While I was waiting for the red light to turn, he strolled over to my car. With a big smile, he looked me straight in the eyes and said “Today I’ll give you a dollar”. He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a dollar. I was touched and burst into tears. What he gave me was more than a dollar bill, but a valuable lesson. No matter what material things are taken from you, no one can take away your choice to be joyful. I know I am blessed.

9.Now, we couldn’t keep them, but we also couldn’t take them back. What a dilemma! All this time, we had been fostering them out of love, hadn’t we? Or had we been fattening them for a fancy meal indeed? Never did I imagine that the joy and fellowship we had would come to a brutal breakup. Plus, I didn’t have the heart to tell Leo to accept such a miserable fate for his beloved ducklings. Dreadfully guilty, I launched a sort of duck adoption agency, desperately emailing and calling animal shelters in the hope of finding them a safe home.
I was losing hope when I received an email from a woman who lived on a hobby farm. She was looking for more ducks, and she was vegetarian, which made her a perfect candidate. We carefully packed everything for our ducks before heading to their new home. As we entered the hobby farm, I felt as if we had slipped into a fairytale: bunnie shopping around sunlit grass, miniature horses trotting on the rich pasture, and grown-up ducks wandering about with their which feathers dancing against summer clouds. Reluctant and rejoiced at the same time, we left out ducks for this dream house.

When Lisa was ten, I came across a picture of myself when I was ten and I showed it to her: “That’s me!” she said with a smile. But I shook my head. We could have been twins. Yes, she looked just like me, and I thought she was a beautiful and smart girl, full of confidence. What a pity I had missed myself. The fat little girl in the photo looked at me, as if she was reminding me that I was not a beached whale, but a beautiful little girl with dreams and gifts. Something started to stir in my mind.
Then I told her the story of the little girl by the pool. After hearing my story, Lisa was a bit confused about my life’s being shaped because of a hateful little girl’s words. But I explained quickly that I had already forgiven her. Anyhow, that was life, and you must find yourself once again. With this, Lisa smiled at me, “Oh, it seems that I’m a really lucky daughter, because I have a beautiful good mother. Time to swim now!”Watching her lively figure going away, I strongly believed that life is not measured by the size of our clothes but by who we are.
