Recently, my daughter found something at the back of a cupboard. She described it: “It’s a box, about the same size and weight as a brick (砖). It’s made of plastic and has buttons (按钮) with numbers on.” She hoped it was a machine for travelling through time! She was wrong— it was my first mobile phone!
Finding my old phone made me think about how fast things change. Everyday objects used by one generation are unknown in the next generation. Here are some examples.
This small, rectangular box is made of plastic. There are two small wheels inside. Around the wheels there is a brown tape. This tape moved from one wheel to the other. It was used for recording or playing music.
We also listened to music on records. These are large, flat, round things and people play them on a record player. My record player was more modern than this one. This gramophone is a very early record player. It is made of wood and metal. My grandparents used one for playing records.
This thing is made of metal with a wooden handle. It was used for cleaning carpets (地毯). My grandmother hung her carpets on a line in the garden. Then she hit them with this carpet beater and the dirt fell out!
This also belonged to my grandparents. It is long and thin. It is made of metal. It has a handle at one end and the other end looks like a bell. It was used for putting out candles. I think it is easier to blow!
If you think these things are funny, remember the things you use today may also look funny to your children and grandchildren!
37.Why does the writer tell us about the thing her daughter found?______
A.To show how quickly things change.
B.To show how good her daughter is at finding things.
C.To show that her daughter is funny.
D.To introduce the topic of traveling through time.

A.The cassette tape and the recorder. B.The candle snuffer and the carpet beater.
C.The carpet beater and the gramophone. D.The gramophone and the mobile phone.

A.Put something outside, e.g. We always put out the rubbish at night.
B.Stop something burning, e.g. The firemen are trying to put out the fire.
C.Make it known to a lot of people, e.g. The police put out a warning about the terrorist.

A British supermarket became the first in the world to let customers pay by using just the veins(静脉) in their fingers in September, 2017.
Customers at the Costcutter store, at Brunel University in London, can now pay by using their vein map.
The company behind the technology, Sthaler, said it was in “serious talks” with other big British supermarkets to use high-technology finger vein scanners(扫描器).
It works by using infrared(红外线) to scan people's finger veins and then connects this map with their bank cards.Customers' bank details are then stored with payment provider Worldpay, in the same way you can store your card details when shopping online.Shoppers can then go to the supermarket with nothing on them but their own hands and use it to make payments in just three seconds. It requires the person to be alive. It means that if a criminal cuts off someone's finger, it would not work.
It's reported that fingerprint recognition(指纹识别),used widely on mobile phones now,is unsafe and can be copied even from finger smears(指纹残留) left on phone screens. But vein technology is safer as it cannot be copied or stolen.
Sthaler said nearly fifty students were already using the system and it expected 3,000 students out of 13, 000 to have signed up by November.
Simon Binns, commercial director of Sthaler, told The Daily Telegraph, “This makes payments so much easier for customers. This is the safest form.”
