Macinley Butson was just 16 years old when she first had the idea to try and protect women from more ? than ? necessary radiation during breast cancer treatments梐nd now, her invention could be a game-changer in the medical field.
Butson, whose father works in medical physics, has always been interested in science.
But she only began researching the harmful side effects of radiation treatment after her father discussed his experience with ineffective cancer treatments in his work. Since Butson
had also recently lost a relative to breast cancer, she felt inspired to conduct her own
research on the subject. She tried to begin her medical research by consulting scientific journals, but she found their academic terms almost impossible to understand.
She then turned to the internet to find videos that taught how to read scientific journals.
As she went deeper in her research, she stumbled upon a key bit of information: copper (铜)has been shown to be effective at protecting skin from radiation. An idea hit this Australian teen as she was viewing a film on medieval wars in her 10th grade history class.
When she saw the scaled(鳞片)patterns of the mail(盔甲),she was inspired to create a wearable protective tool out of copper. She then headed back online and watched videos on how to put together tiny scales. She made her own flexible scale-mail which she now calls SMART: Scale Mail for Radiation Therapy.
When her invention was tested in a laboratory setting, it reduced surface exposure to
unnecessary radiation by 75%. And now Butson is working on getting her SMART into clinical settings for use.
    24. Why did Macinley Butson start her research?
    A. To assist her father with his work. B. To save her relative from cancer.
    C. To publish some articles in journals. D. To find effective ways to treat cancer.
    25. What does the underlined phrase 搒tumbled upon? in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A. Came across. B. Missed. C. Passed on. D. Required.
    26. Where did Macinley Buston get inspiration for her invention?

    C. History textbooks. D. Soldiers? defensive clothes.
    27. Which of the following best describes Macinley Buston?

We抳e all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence.
What抯 the problem? It抯 possible that we all have compromised conversational
intelligence. It抯 more likely that none of us start a conversation because it抯 awkward and challenging, or we think it抯 annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself
among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it抯 an invaluable
social practice that results in big benefits.
Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can抰 forget that deep relationships wouldn抰 even exist if it weren抰 for casual conversation. Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. 揂lmost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,? he explains. 揟he key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”
In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited
people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction (互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better
coffee shop experience. 揑t抯 not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,? say Dunn. 揃ut interactions with peripheral (边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense
of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. 揝mall talk is the basis of good manners,? he says.
    28. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?
    A. Addiction to smartphones.
    B. Impatience with slow service.
    C. Inappropriate behaviours in public places.
    D. Absence of communication between strangers.
    29. What is important for successful small talk according to Carducci?
    A. Showing good manners. B. Focusing on a topic.
    C. Making business deals. D. Relating to other people.
    30. What does the coffee-shop study suggest about small talk?
    A. It improves family relationships. B. It raises people抯 confidence.
    C. It makes people feel good. D. It matters as much as formal talk.
    31. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Conversation Counts B. Ways of Making Small Talk
    C. Benefits of Small Talk D. Uncomfortable Silence

A study found wireless signals are able to pass through bags and suitcases to judge the sizes of dangerous metal objects and identify them. 揟hese items could include weapons, chemicals, laptops and batteries for bombs,? the research team said on Tuesday.
Research suggested that Wi-Fi can now be used to estimate the volume of liquids such
as water, acid, alcohol and other chemicals for explosive material. The study led by
researchers at the Wireless Information Network Laboratory(WINLAB)in the School of
Engineering showed a wireless device with two to three antennas(天线)that could be
    fitted in existing Wi-Fi networks.
The detection system analyzes what happens when wireless signals go through and bounce off objects or materials. The approach, which the paper states, works by separating the wireless interference (干扰) caused by two factors of objects ? the material and shape. 揗ost dangerous objects such as weapons are usually metal or liquid, which have significant interference,? researchers said.
When it was tested on a backpack, the accuracy rate topped 95 percent. 揃ut the accuracy dropped to about 90 percent when objects inside bags are wrapped. And the tech
could save lives if used in museums, stadiums, theme parks or schools,? the team said,
noting its design can inspect bags or luggage without being an exposure to privacy.
It uses channel state information(CS) that is readily available in low-cost Wi-Fi devices. 揟his could have a great impact on protecting the public from dangerous objects,? said Yingying Chen, a co-author of the study, 揟here抯 a growing need for that now. In large public areas, it抯 hard to set up expensive screening equipment like what抯 in
airports. Manpower is always needed to check bags and we want to develop a method to
    try to reduce manpower. “
The peer-reviewed study, which recently won a best paper award at the 2018 IEEE Conference on Communications and Network Security, is now published online. 揊uture work will continue to focus on ameliorating the accuracy of identifying objects and imaging shapes and volumes,? researchers said.
    32. What does paragraph 3 talk about?
    A. The function of the technique. B. The way the device works.
    C. The principle the study is based on. D. The benefit of the study findings.
    33. What抯 the advantage of the device?
    A. It saves people in danger of natural disasters.
    B. It passes through bags without damaging them.
    C. It uses antennas to pick up networks? signals.
    D. It protects personal information from being exposed.
    34. Why did the researchers study the device according to Yingying Chen?
    A. To save money and labour. B. To make full use of Wi-Fi.
    C. To protect passengers? privacy. D. To research dangerous objects.
    35. Which of the following can replace the underlined word 揳meliorating? in the last paragraph?
    A. Confirming. B. Improving. C. Discovering. D. Examining.

My writing career began quite accidentally. It was all because of my friend Henry.
Born into a poor family, Henry had no chance to attend school. He couldn抰 read but he liked my reading for him greatly. One day I played a little trick on Henry. I was reading him a story from my textbook. Suddenly I moved away from the story and made up my own, pretending to turn pages regularly. Henry, of course, had no idea at all. Upon finishing the story, Henry began to clap.
揟hat was the best story you抳e read me in a long time,? he said, still clapping.
    I laughed. 揜eally?”
揑t was great. Will you read me more of it tomorrow?”
揊ascinating,? I thought, feeling like a man who discovered a buried treasure in his own backyard. That same night, I tried writing my first short story. It was a story about a man
who found a magic cup. If he cried into the cup, his tears turned into pearls (珍珠), but he
was a happy man and rarely cried. So he managed to find ways to make himself sad. The story ended with the man sitting on a mountain of pearls, unable to feel happy any longer.
The next day, I ran to Henry after school, asking him to hear the story and told him I
wrote it last night. Henry was totally absorbed in it, his face shifting as the story developed.
揝ome day, you will be a great writer,? Henry said. 揂nd your stories will be read all over the world. But can I ask a question? Why didn抰 the man just eat some onions to make himself cry to get pearls?? I was shocked because I never expected Henry could be helpful to my writing. I rewrote it and with Henry抯 encouragement, I sent it to a magazine. To my surprise, it was published and sold well.

Whenever I finished a new story, I would turn to Henry. Gradually, I found Henry was really an
excellent listener as well as a good adviser. Although he couldn抰 read, he had a clear mind and a gift for
polishing stories by asking questions. Every time I shared my new stories to him, he always listened
attentively and provided valuable suggestions. I never thought my reading to Henry could arouse his
talent for stories, which contributed to an unexpected cooperation. Later, several more stories were
published and I was well paid.
I decided to use the money to help Henry. However, I didn抰 know what Henry wanted most. When
he touched the pages dearly on which my stories were printed, it occurred to me that Henry should have
