Macinley Butson was just 16 years old when she first had the idea to try and protect women from more ? than ? necessary radiation during breast cancer treatments梐nd now, her invention could be a game-changer in the medical field.
Butson, whose father works in medical physics, has always been interested in science.
But she only began researching the harmful side effects of radiation treatment after her father discussed his experience with ineffective cancer treatments in his work. Since Butson
had also recently lost a relative to breast cancer, she felt inspired to conduct her own
research on the subject. She tried to begin her medical research by consulting scientific journals, but she found their academic terms almost impossible to understand.
She then turned to the internet to find videos that taught how to read scientific journals.
As she went deeper in her research, she stumbled upon a key bit of information: copper （铜）has been shown to be effective at protecting skin from radiation. An idea hit this Australian teen as she was viewing a film on medieval wars in her 10th grade history class.
When she saw the scaled（鳞片）patterns of the mail（盔甲），she was inspired to create a wearable protective tool out of copper. She then headed back online and watched videos on how to put together tiny scales. She made her own flexible scale-mail which she now calls SMART: Scale Mail for Radiation Therapy.

In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited
people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction (互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better
coffee shop experience. 揑t抯 not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,? say Dunn. 揃ut interactions with peripheral (边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense

A study found wireless signals are able to pass through bags and suitcases to judge the sizes of dangerous metal objects and identify them. 揟hese items could include weapons, chemicals, laptops and batteries for bombs,? the research team said on Tuesday.
Research suggested that Wi-Fi can now be used to estimate the volume of liquids such
as water, acid, alcohol and other chemicals for explosive material. The study led by
researchers at the Wireless Information Network Laboratory(WINLAB)in the School of

fitted in existing Wi-Fi networks.
The detection system analyzes what happens when wireless signals go through and bounce off objects or materials. The approach, which the paper states, works by separating the wireless interference (干扰) caused by two factors of objects ? the material and shape. 揗ost dangerous objects such as weapons are usually metal or liquid, which have significant interference,? researchers said.
When it was tested on a backpack, the accuracy rate topped 95 percent. 揃ut the accuracy dropped to about 90 percent when objects inside bags are wrapped. And the tech
could save lives if used in museums, stadiums, theme parks or schools,? the team said,
noting its design can inspect bags or luggage without being an exposure to privacy.
It uses channel state information(CS) that is readily available in low-cost Wi-Fi devices. 揟his could have a great impact on protecting the public from dangerous objects,? said Yingying Chen, a co-author of the study, 揟here抯 a growing need for that now. In large public areas, it抯 hard to set up expensive screening equipment like what抯 in
airports. Manpower is always needed to check bags and we want to develop a method to
