But n red crrectins. And always a star. Smetimes even a Gd! The scrawl (潦草的笔迹) in that wrried my mther, s ne day when she met Mrs. White fr ne f thse Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never crrected my mistakes. Why she never red-pencilled in the right spellings f wrds r pinted ut grammatical errrs.
Mrs. White said, “The children are just beginning t get excited abut using wrds, abut frming sentences. I dn’t want t dampen that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait...” What my mther gave me was the gist f what she culd remember. But I grew up learning t use wrds with lving cnfidence just like that.
And it ccurs t me that if Mrs. White had used her red pen mre precisely I prbably wuldn’t be telling yu abut this nw. I lk back nw and think she must have been a rather extrardinary teacher, wh restrained (限制) her red pen t allw the jy, wnder and excitement f expressin flwer.
I used t misspell “beautiful” a lt. I never culd quite remember that the “e” went befre the “a”. It annyed my teacher in high schl endlessly. Eventually the “e” s and “a” s that were wrng placed in “beautiful” settled int their right places. I am glad I didn’t wait n them thugh. “Pretty” is easier t spell but it desn’t hld as much as yu mean smetimes.

Little kids can pick up a new language pretty easily. It’s suppsed t be far harder fr lder children. But that cnclusin might nt be crrect. The windw n when peple can learn a language well appears t last until arund age 17 r 18.
Earlier research had suggested we’re best at learning grammar in early childhd. Then we hit a dead end arund age 5. But that’s nt s, said Jshua Hartshrne and his clleagues.
Hartshrne surveyed tens f thusands f peple nline. He began by asking vlunteers t take an nline English grammar test. He used their answers t guess their native languages. After cmpleting the test, vlunteers answered questins abut where they had lived, the languages they had spken frm birth and the age at which they first started learning English. It als asked hw lng they’d lived in an English-speaking cuntry.
Hartshrne’s grup analyzed respnses frm 669,498 native and nn-native speakers f English. If peple mved t a new cuntry and began speaking English by age 10 t 12, they finally spke it as well as thse wh had learned bth English and anther language frm birth, the researchers fund.
The results further shwed that arund age 17, peple’s ability t learn grammar tk a nsedive and that thse wh started learning English after age 10 r 12 never reached the same level f English prficiency ( 熟 练 ) as peple wh started yunger. Why? The researchers think it’s because they had fewer years t practice befre their skills drpped ff at 17.
Hwever, they fund language learning did nt end at 17 and peple’s English skills kept imprving slightly until arund age 30. This was true amng bth native speakers and thse wh learned English as a secnd language, the new study fund.

Only by vercming fear f failure can we achieve success in life. Here are sme tips n hw t remve fear and fcus n success:
Understand that at times yu make mistakes. 36 Befre any f us learned hw t walk, we crawled ( 爬 行 ). We gt up, fell dwn and gt up again. We cntinued the prcess until we culd walk quite well.
37 Instead, view it as a stepping stne. Make certain that yu learn frm failure and then use what yu have learned in future situatins. Refuse t cnsider failure a character weakness. Ding s will nly prevent yu frm achieving future success.
Remember that failure has prduced many successes. 38 Albert Einstein’s teacher tld him t quit schl and said, “Einstein, yu will never achieve anything!” Beethven’s music teacher said he was hpeless t becme a cmpser ( 作曲家). Henry Frd’s first tw car cmpanies failed.
Appreciate the benefits f failure. Ralph Wald Emersn said, “All life is an experiment. The mre experiments yu try, the better yu make.” It’s hardly pssible fr smene t achieve success fr the first time he tries. 39
Believe in yurself. Rather than give up when things dn’t wrk ut, take it as a chance t build perseverance ( 坚持不懈). Remind yurself hw many failures became successful because they wuldn’t give up. 40
Dn’t take failure persnally.
Wrk hard and try t avid failure.
Realize that yu are human and humans make mistakes.
Believe that yu’ve gt what it takes t wrk thrugh the difficult times.
Making the same mistake again can lead t the failure in yur future wrk.
Cnsider hw many peple in histry had failed befre they became successful.
In ther wrds, yur chances f getting things right n the first try are little.
