These people are studying English. However, they are now facing some problems.
I am Pablo. I work 50 hours a week as a taxi driver, so I talk to people all day. They understand me, but I know I make a lot of mistakes. No one corrects me. My vocabulary is strong, but grammar is my problem. I'm trying to change little by little. For example, I don't use the past tense (时态). I always say, “I drive him to the office this morning” instead of “I drove him to the office this morning”.
My name is Maria Luisa. I'm teaching myself English, and I'm good at grammar. However, it's really difficult to find ways to practice English. I live in an area where everyone speaks my language. My neighbours and friends speak Spanish. I can speak Spanish in the supermarket and at the post office.
I am Li Ping. I understand the grammar and the readings in my class and I think my writing is good, but I'm very nervous when I speak English. I don't want to make any mistakes because I'm afraid people will think that I'm stupid. Also, my pronunciation isn't good. When I speak, people often say, “What? Say that again.”
I am Yoshi. I have been in the United States for one year. I'm studying hard and I know grammar well, but the vocabulary is very difficult. When I listen, I don't understand many of the words. When I try to read, there are three or four new words in every sentence. I feel discouraged.

People often ask me for advice on how to learn English. Everyone is different. I'll share some of my experience. I once learned English in Beijing University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell is that, once you've started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. When you're riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “how would I say them in English?” At first, it will be with simple words or word groups, but later you should think about bigger phrases and word groups. Now I'm in America, and for most time, I just think in English and speak it directly. It's amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of trying to speak English with others because I didn't want to make mistakes. Finally I got over it. And while traveling in America, I tried to hang out with friends who speak no Chinese, so I have no choice but to speak English. I wasn't afraid to make mistakes and I don't mind others laughing at me. My English started improving more quickly after that.
It may be a good idea to ask any of your American friends to look at the way you're writing, and give you some advice.

The English language has a lot of words which can be used in many different ways and in many different expressions.
One such example is the word “matter”.In fact,“matter” can mean just about anything. It could be one of the most useful words in the English language.
Let's get to the heart of the “matter” — a matter of principle.
If someone says that you owe (欠) him $50, but you don't, a friend might say, “Well, you could pay him the $50.It's not that much money. Then you won't have to hear him say it anymore.” But if you do not owe him the money, do not pay him the money. It's a matter of principle.
There is another way to use the word “matter”.But be careful with your choice of words.
If you ask someone, “What's the matter?”, it shows you are worried about the other person. But saying, “What's the matter with you?” has a completely different meaning. And it usually sounds rude.In fact, when you say, “What's the matter with you?”, you are suggesting that the person did something wrong or stupid.
Another expression that could sound rude is to say, “It doesn't matter to me.” Here, it depends on the context,_and how you say it.
Let's say you tell someone that a friend just got a big raise at work. That person answers with,“It doesn't matter to me.” Here,it means he or she does not care. And it sounds rude.
But saying,“Oh,you pick where we eat dinner. It doesn't matter to me.” does not sound rude.In this situation,“It doesn't matter.” shows you are easy-going.
No matter how you look at it and what you say,“matter” is a very useful word. And it's only a matter of time before you will become an expert on the use of “matter”.

Each May since 1956 people from across Europe and around the world have gathered around their televisions with friends and family for an evening of international entertainment (娱乐):The Eurovision Song Contest. It may well be a fun event but perhaps it's not the shared celebration of European language that it could be. In the first ten years of Eurovision, the UK and Ireland were the only two countries to sing in English. Now English is what we expect. Is it that English is becoming, or has become the official language of music?
From high streets in Hungary to supermarkets in Sweden, from bus stops in Bulgaria to parks in Poland, people listen to English-language music everywhere. And people don't just listen, they sing it too! From sporting events in Spain to nightclubs in Norway, from concerts in Croatia to fitness (健身) classes in France, people sing along to popular songs in their everyday lives, in English. But why?
For one evening each year Eurovision is the dinner party of Europe. A dinner party to which each guest brings something special. Their clothing, tradition and food show their culture and their language shows the character of a nation. Although there are 50 nations with 83 languages, for Eurovision, English is the only language. Does Eurovision really represent Europe?
English is an international language spoken by over 1 billion people worldwide. It is no surprise that so many musicians make music in English. Of course, music makes money and more listeners make more money. According to Ragnar Thorhallsson, singer and guitarist with the Icelandic indie band “Of Monsters and Men, English is simpler and is easier to make rhythms.” Could this be true?
Let's remember that although English-language music is everywhere, music is not everything. As long as we continue to learn, to speak, to love, diversity (多样性) shall be valued. After all, what fun is a dinner party if the guests can't communicate or express themselves in the way they choose?

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
School mornings were always busy. The first sentence I usually heard was “It's time to rise!”It was Mom's loudest voices, and there was no way I could pretend not to hear it or hide from it.
By then, I couldn't get to the kitchen fast enough. In fact, it was a race between my sister, my brother, and me. We usually seated ourselves at the same time, sometimes knocking each other out of our places. After breakfast, we all rushed out to the bus stop as we took our lunch bags that contained a sandwich, fruit, and dessert.
Then, one day, much to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch! What could have happened to it? Did Mom forget to make or buy it? Oh, well, I thought,“It's only one time, so it's no big deal.”But, for the next few days, my lunch contained no dessert! So one day, after school, as soon as I got home, I asked,“Mom! Why haven't you been putting a dessert in my school lunch?”
Mom answered,“Why, Eugene, I have been including a dessert in your lunch. If you're not getting them, then who is?”
So then we thought of my activities, and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at school, I always put my lunch in the classroom closet (储物间) along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl — the bad boy of the third-grade classroom. The teacher didn't like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of each day.
Carl lived in a group foster home (集体寄养之家). He was loud and somewhat of a thief. He would take just about anything that wasn't fastened down (盖紧), so he wasn't welcome at school. Mom and I decided that with nothing else to do, Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1:
My mother and I talked about ways to solve this problem.
Paragraph 2:
Another day, Carl asked me if he could come to my house and meet my mother.
参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
My mother and I talked about ways to solve this problem. After some thinking, my mother said she was going to put two packages of goodies in my lunch. I was confused, but my mother just told me that one package was for me and one was for Carl. And then I put my lunch bag in the classroom closet as usual. One day, Carl stopped me and asked why there were always two desserts in my lunches. I told him that one was for him. At this, he became a little thoughtful.
Paragraph 2:
Another day, Carl asked me if he could come to my house and meet my mother. I told him that he would be welcome at our house as long as he did not steal anything and did not fight with others. He agreed. After that, Carl would come to our house every day after school with me and we enjoyed our time together playing games. I learned a lifelong lesson from Mom about how to treat others with respect.
