Read the following three posts from the website, ifonly.com, and answer the questions that follow.
CJ, 31, social worker
I wish I had given the plain-looking guys a second chance while I was at school. I always went for handsome, athletic types. So, where am I today? Married to a good-looking fool. A handsome man who has no heart, no sympathy, and no love for anyone but himself. I sometimes visit my family back in my hometown and occasionally I run into old classmates — the plain-looking guys. And what do I see now? Very intelligent, warm, funny men who are everything I want, but will never have in a husband.
Mia, 22, photographer
When I was at school,I played in most of the school sports teams. I remember one year our football team had to win the last game to get into the finals. Three minutes of the game left and we needed to score. I got control of the ball and ran towards the goal. Our captain was right next to me shouting “go on, take a shot”. But I panicked and passed the ball to her. She shot and missed. If only I hadn't passed the ball. I knew immediately that if I had taken the shot I would have scored. Ever since that game I've always taken every opportunity I could.
Ben, 52, mechanic
I wish I had listened to my parents more when I was a teenager. Thinking back, I find they gave me lots of good advice, but I ignored everything they said. I thought they were old and didn't know anything. Now I have got two teenagers of my own and realize how right they were.
If I had listened to them, I might have made some better decisions in my life. I would have gone to university and probably waited a bit before I got married. I hope my daughters will listen to me more than I listened to my parents.

Yesterday afternoon I was in my studio working. I was chatting on the phone when something made me look up. Out of the window, on the other side of the street, I saw my very elderly neighbor kneeling in the grass, his caregiver beside him. “I've got to so.” I said to my friend. “I think something is wrong.” So I ran downstairs, out my front door and across the street.
“He was taking a walk, and he tripped on the pavement,” the caregiver said. “I can't lift him on my own.” My neighbor is a large man, so I ran back across the street and got my husband! Together we were able to get him standing, but he couldn't walk. Luckily, a woman bicycled by and asked if we needed help! She got a lawn chair from my front porch and we got my neighbor seated. After a few minutes of rest, we were able to help him get into the house. “I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't rushed over to help. I was all alone,” his caregiver said.
So here's what I've been thinking about since: help your neighbor. Look up from what you are doing, and look around for who you can help. It may not be as clear as it was in this case, but there's always help you can give — to your neighbor across the street, or the person standing beside you. They are all your neighbors.

Dear Elaine,
My third-grade daughter is having friend problems at school. She comes home complaining(抱怨)about other children at school every day. None of the other children want to play with her. They make fun of her and no one wants to sit by her at lunch. My heart is broken when I hear her words. When I suggest things she should try, she tells me that I don't understand her. When I try to find out what is really going on, she gets even more upset and cries harder. What can I do to help her?
Sarah
Dear Sarah,
We all want our children to be accepted by other children and it hurts us when they are not. We want to march right up to school, shake those children, and say “Don't treat my baby in this way!” Our task, however, is to keep our expectations, worry, and anger to ourselves and do something positive (积极的) for our children. We must encourage our children to solve their own problems.
If you want to help your daughter, the best thing you can do is accept her feelings. I know how hard it is not to do something to help our children with their friend problems, but they will always refuse our advice. When your daughter comes to you with her complaints, listen without saying a word. Try to see what your daughter is feeling and ignore the words. When you think you know what she is feeling, let her know that you know. She needs to express her feelings and you just allow her to do that.
Sit and listen for as long as she wants to talk, or cry. If you need to say something, let her know that her feelings are acceptable. They often need to be encouraged to solve their own problems. We may have to listen for a long time before they move from complaints (抱怨)to problem-solving. They need our support and encouragement but they don't need or want our advice.
Trust your daughter to learn and grow from this experience. You will, too.
Elaine Gibson

I am a person who has always loved reading. For me, it is easy to get lost in a book and return to the world a couple of hours later having been on an adventure. As a 6-year-old, I could be found reading Harry Potter, a difficult book for a 6-year-old but I enjoyed it all the same. Now, as a student, it is harder to find the time to read books for pleasure; however, I relish the summers where I have the time to read to satisfy myself. Growing up, it soon became clear that spelling for me was not difficult and I had a wide vocabulary. This is because I began reading from such a young age.
My advice for you as English learners would be to read the books that you have often read in your own language in English. Reading, stories especially, is a great way of improving your vocabulary and spelling without noticing as you are lost in the story. For me, I have read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in French and am currently reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Spanish. This is a really useful way of being able to read in another language because I know the story so well in English, it is easy to follow the story in the foreign language even if I do not understand every word.
This is another important point: it is not necessary to understand every word. If you understand the meaning of the sentence, each word is not necessarily important. Sometimes it is impossible to translate directly from one language to another. Quite often, if a word is used several times in a text, you can gain your own meaning from it and it makes much more sense than if you tried to translate it in the first place.
Give it a try. If you like reading you could be opening up a whole new world of literature.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As high school students, we must spend the vast majority of our time in class and reading books. __16__ Without a friend, our world would be a wilderness. What kind of friends should we pick?
What are the dos and don'ts of friendship? Here are some of my opinions.
__17__ We may consider different people we meet every day to be nice and feel like making friends with them. However, not all good people are matches for us. Rather than make friends with the popular students, we should spend time with those we have things in common with, or who will be there to listen to us. Moreover, we should be careful about students with many bad habits, since they could pass those habits on to us.
Being tolerant is a good idea. No one is perfect. __18__ Therefore, we should try to understand our friends and be patient with them when they make mistakes since we're all on a journey to being better people. Gradually, our friendships will last longer and become more solid.
Be honest. __19__ However, it's better to be honest with friends, to tell them what is bothering us and seek their advice. Being honest will not annoy your friends, but it will bring you and your friend closer together.
We need to be open-minded. Listen to others' ideas, whether you agree with them or not. __20__
A.We must be careful.
B.We need to be well-informed.
C.As is said, honesty is the best policy.
D.A friend without faults will never be found.

G.We all tend to show our positive side to friends and hide our true feelings.

第三部分:写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
请以“Should we click for a friend?”为题写一篇英语短文谈谈你的看法。
注意:1.写作词数应为80左右;
2.可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。
参考范文:
When it comes to whether we should click for a friend, I think the answer is “No”.On the one hand, I think the friend on apps is not reliable, because the information online cannot be proved efficiently. On the other hand, what we should do is to go out so as to make more friends in reality, which will improve our personalities and enrich our spiritual and real life world. Clicking for a friend isn't a good way to make our social life colorful after all. In conclusion, we should say no to clicking for a friend.
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was ten, I was suddenly faced with the suffering of moving from the only home I had ever known. My whole life, brief as it was, had been spent in that big old house, gracefully touched with the laughter and tears of four generations.
When the final day came, I ran to the small backyard and sat alone, with tears welling up from my heart.Suddenly I felt a hand rest on my shoulder.I looked up to see my grandfather. “It isn't easy, is it, Billy?” he said softly, sitting down on the steps beside me.
“Grandpa,” I replied through my tears, “how can I ever say goodbye to you and all my friends?”
For a moment he just stared off into the apple trees.“Goodbye is such a sad word,” he said.“It seems too final, too cold, for friends to use.We seem to have so many ways of saying goodbye and they all have one thing in common: sadness. When you and your friends must part, I want you to reach deep within you and bring back that first hello.Come with me, my friend,” he whispered.
We walked, hand in hand, to his favorite place in the front yard, where a huge red rosebush sat noticeably alone.Kneeling, he pulled me close.“It isn't just the roses that are beautiful, Billy. It's that special place in your heart that makes them so.”
His eyes met mine again.“Billy, I planted these roses a long time ago — before your mother came to the world. I put them into the soil the day my first son was born. That boy's name was Billy, just like yours.I used to watch him pick roses for his mother.” I saw my grandfather's tears.I had never seen him cry before. His voice became hoarse.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1:
“One day a terrible war came, and my son, like so many sons, said goodbye to fight a great evil.
Paragraph 2:
A year and a half later, my grandfather became seriously ill.
参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
“One day a terrible war came, and my son, like so many sons, said goodbye to fight a great evil.Ten months later a telegram came.My son had died in some tiny village in Italy. All I could think of was that the last thing I said to him in life was goodbye.” Grandpa slowly stood up.“Don't ever say goodbye, Billy.Don't ever give in to the sadness and the loneliness of that word.I want you to remember to take that special hello and lock it away within you.”
Paragraph 2:
A year and a half later, my grandfather became seriously ill. When he returned after several weeks in the hospital, he wanted his bed next to the window, where he could see his beloved rosebush.I noted how tired he looked.I took his hand as gently as he had once taken mine.“Hello, Grandpa,” I whispered. His eyes slowly opened, “Hello, my friend.” With a brief smile, he closed them again and forever.Suddenly, I knew what he had meant about never saying goodbye — about refusing to give in to sadness.
