The Chongyang Festival falls on the 9th day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar,so it is also known as the Double Ninth Festival.
The festival is held in the golden season of autumn,at harvest-time.The bright clear weather and the joy of bringing in the harvest make for a festival happy atmosphere. The Chongyang Festival is usually perfect for outdoor activities.Climbing a mountain, carrying a spray of dogwood (茱萸) and drinking chrysanthemum (菊花) wine have become the traditional activities of the festival.
The dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance (香气),and is often used as a Chinese herbal medicine.People in ancient times believed it could drive away evil spirits and prevent one from getting a chill (寒意) in late autumn. So its history as a medicine goes back many centuries. But the custom of carrying a spray of dogwood during the Double Ninth Festival is slowly dying out and many people in the cities do not even know what a dogwood spray looks like.
Early in the Han Dynasty, about 2,000 years ago, people used to climb a high platform outside the capital city of Chang’an on the occasion of the Chongyang Festival. For many,it was the last outing of the year before the onset of winter. The custom evolved (发展成) into present form, when people go climbing to get some exercise as well as enjoy the autumn scenery.
But what about those people who live in plains far from any mountain? The problem is solved by going for a picnic and eating cakes. The Chinese word for “cake”is “Gao”,a homonym (同音异义词) of the Chinese word for “high”.Mountains are high,so eating cakes can,by a stretch of the imagination, take the place of going for a climb.
4.Why do people carry a spray of dogwood on the Chongyang Festival?
A.Because the dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance.

第三段简要介绍了茱萸这种植物,它具有浓郁的香气,可以用作中草药,但是这些都不是重阳节人们携带茱萸的原因,而“People in ancient times believed it could drive away...chill(寒意) in late autumn.”

The New Year is a time for celebrations for almost everyone around the world. In Britain, people go to pubs and nightclubs to dance the old year away, and to welcome in the new one at midnight.Everyone wants to kiss someone special (boyfriend,
girlfriend or even a complete stranger) as the bells ring out at midnight.
In recent years, street parties have become more popular.Hundreds or even thousands of people gather in squares, main streets or on the river banks to listen to bands playing and to see fabulous firework displays.
For people who stay at home, most watch special, live New Year shows on TV and countdown, along with the presenters, from 10 to 1 as the last seconds of the old year tick away and the bells of the New Year are rung.
In Scotland,on New Year’s Eve,people visit their neighbours and drink, dance and generally have a good time.If you’re invited to a Scottish home,it’s important to know what to bring with you:a lump of coal, some shortbread and some whisky.
The coal shows warmth so you’re wishing that the people you visit will have enough heat in the coming year. The shortbread represents food,so you’re hoping that the people will have enough to eat in the New Year. Some Scots call whisky “the water of life”,so when you hand over your bottle to your hosts,it means you want them to have enough to drink over the next 12 months.
There’s one more key task you still have to perform if you can.The first person to knock on a neighbour’s door is supposed to be a tall, dark, handsome man.If you are, you’ll bring good luck to the household. But what if that’s not you? Well,
don’t ring the bell just yet.Wait a while and the right person will turn up soon!
24.What is the best title for this passage?

C.Visiting Scottish Homes in New Year

B.street concerts have become more popular on New Year’s Eve
C.British people let off fireworks in public places to celebrate the New Year
D.people stay at home doing nothing but wait for the bells of the New Year to ring
26.Why do visitors take some things to a Scottish home on New Year’s Eve?
A.To share good food and warmth.
    B.To help those poor families.
C.To send best wishes to the families.
    D.To show respect and richness.
27.The underlined phrase “the right person”in the last paragraph refers to

It’s a safe bet that a robot made your car and made your computer.Pretty soon, they could be making your bed and breakfast, too.
Increasingly, engineers are saying that robots are going to move out of research departments and into your home.Companies including General Electric are working on designs for small robots.Products like the Roomba,a robot that can clean floors, are flying off the shelves.
What’s behind this new robot revolution? It’s partly a matter of technology.Devices that can recognise and respond to a human voice have been developed. There are now a few different ways for robots to move around. They can walk, crawl or ride on wheels.Robots are being made smaller and smaller. They are also becoming more and more able.
A bigger part of the story is on the demand side. From the day the television remote control was invented, people around the world have searched for new ways to be lazy.Take into consideration that more and more people can afford robots, and the time seems ripe to introduce robots to the ordinary family.
To be sure, robots that walk on two legs and talk like people are still a long way off. However, robots that do basic housework such as cleaning or gardening are sure to come out soon. One thing is certain—when these robots do come into our homes, things will change forever.
28.The underlined part “flying off the shelves”in the second paragraph means .
    A.selling well
    B.cleaning the shelves smartly
    C.flying freely
    D.dropping onto the floor
    29.What can Roomba do?
    A.Making beds and breakfast.
    B.Making cars and computers.
    C.Cleaning floors.
    D.Looking after kids and pets.
30.Which plays a more important role in revolutionizing the robot?
    A.Science and technology.
    B.Rapid development of companies.
    C.Effective marketing means.
    D.Great demand from the buyers.
31.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Robots have already come into every home.
B.Technology is the only basis of the development of robots.
C.General Electric is not interested in designing small robots.
D.Robots that can walk on two legs and talk like people are still far from us.
根据本段首句“Increasingly, engineers are saying that robots are going to move out of research departments and into your home.” 故选A。
由第二段中的“Products like the Roomba,a robot that can clean floors (像Roomba这样的产品,是能清扫地面的机器人)”可知,Roomba可以清扫地面。
“What’s behind this new robot revolution? It’s partly a matter of technology.”及第四段首句“A bigger part of the story is on the demand side.(更大一部分是需求。)”
由最后一段中的“To be sure, robots that walk on two legs and talk like people are still a long way off.”
    D
We have to admit that reading is not a pleasant thing at school.Reading is not based on a child’s interests, but to cope with tests. When children are little,we make them read aloud before the teacher and other children,so that we can be sure they “know”all the words they are reading. This means that when they don’t know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years,I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously.
One day,I said to them,“Now,I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for fun.I am not going to ask you questions to find out whether you understand the books or not to ask you what words mean.If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it,that’s enough for me.”
The children sat shocked and silent. Was this a teacher talking? One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me steadily for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me,she said slowly and seriously,“Mr Holt,do you really mean that?”I said just as seriously,“I mean every word of it.”
Later, she really astonished me.One day,she was reading at her desk. From a glimpse of the illustrations I thought she was reading Moby Dick (白鲸).I said,“Don’t you find parts of it rather heavy going?”She answered,“Oh,sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part.”
This is exactly what reading should be.Let the students make their own decisions, find something, dive into it,take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it and go on to something else.
32.What did the teacher tell his students to read for?
    A.For pleasure.
    B.For knowledge.
    C.For a larger vocabulary.
    D.For higher scores in exams.
33.On hearing the teacher’s talk, how did the children probably feel?
    A.Stupid.
    B.Unreasonable.
    C.Understandable.
    D.Too good to be true.
34.What can we learn from the girl?
A.She skipped over those easy parts while reading.
B.She turned out to be a top student through reading.
C.She had a hard time finishing the required reading tasks.
D.She learnt to appreciate some parts of the difficult books.
35.What is the teacher’s point of view in the passage?
    A.Reading requires teachers’guidance.
B.Reading helps students do well in school.
C.Children should be left to decide what to read.
D.Children cannot tell good parts from bad ones.
