    Wang Daheng, Father f Chinese Optical Engineering
    In 1949, the field f applied ptical (光学) science didn't exist in China. Understanding its imprtance fr natinal strength, the Chinese gvernment paid much attentin t ptical research.
    Wang Daheng, a respected ptical physicist, devted his whle life t this cause. He kept watching n the develpment f China's first ptical glass, first electrnic micrscpe, first laser device, and first large­size ptical measuring equipment, and helped t fund the Chinese Academy f Engineering. He was called the Father f Chinese Optical Engineering.
    As a teenager, Wang Daheng ften fllwed his father t the bservatry and became greatly interested in the apparatus (仪器) there. In 1936, he graduated frm Tsinghua University with a degree in physics. Tw years later, he wn a gvernment schlarship t study in England. After earning his master's degree frm Imperial Cllege Lndn in 1940, he began his dctral studies in ptical physics and technlgy.
    In 1948, Wang gave up his established career and cmfrtable life in the West and returned t his mtherland with the aim f empwering it (增强它的自主权) thrugh science and technlgy. At the time China did nt have the capability t prduce ptical measuring equipment n its wn. In 1951, Wang was instructed t fund an institute f fine mechanics and was appinted its first president. Within less than tw years, Wang and his team prduced the first grup f China­made ptical glass. Over the fllwing six years, they went n t develp the cuntry's first electrnic micrscpe, first high­precisin thedlite (经纬仪), first ptical range finder, and five ther ptical devices, laying the fundatin fr China's precisin ptical instrument industry. In 1961, they independently develped the ruby laser in China. In additin t scientific research, Wang advanced the study f ptics in higher educatin.
    Starting in the 1960s, Wang participated in ptical research related t the develpment f nuclear bmbs, missiles, and man­made satellites. In 1970, China successfully launched the Dngfanghng I satellite, f which Wang was ne f the designers. When the satellite returned t Earth, the devices they designed brught back clear images f ur hme planet seen frm the uter space fr the first time.
    T clse the technlgical gap between China and develped cuntries, Wang and three ther scientists made the suggestin f drawing up a state hi­tech develpment plan in 1986, which led t the famus 863 Prgram.
    In 1992, Wang and a grup f ther scientists called fr the creatin f the Chinese Academy f Engineering. In the fllwing years, he wn many hnrs frm the state. He passed away in Beijing aged 96 n July 21, 2011 after living a full and fruitful life.
