Inventors are always at work, dreaming up new technologies. Some inventions help us solve problems. Others make life easier, or more fun. Here, TIME for Kids (TFK) presents three of our favorite inventions. See how they make us live a better life.
    Stopping Sickness
Christine Schindler is an engineer. She wanted to help stop the spread of foodborne illnesses, so she created PathSpot. It uses light to scan a person’s hands for harmful germs, such as E. coli. Restaurant employees hold their hands beneath the scanner. Then the scanner evaluates whether they must be rewashed. Some popular restaurants have started using the product since it was launched in May, including some Chopt and Pokéworks ones.
    Talking Eyes
For people who are blind or have other visual impairments, the OrCam MyEye 2 could be a game changer. It might also be useful to people with reading difficulties, such as dyslexia. Described as “talking glasses”, this AI device can be attached to any eyeglass frame. It can identify faces. It can also read text aloud. Fitting all this power into such a small device is like “putting an elephant in a small closet”, says Amnon Shashua, the inventor of the technology. Now the device can be bought online.
    Sports Safety
Research shows that playing football increases the risk of brain injury. Still, about a million kids under the age of 13 play football, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. The VICIS ZERO1 YOUTH football helmet can help keep kids safe. It has thick support on the front and sides, where kids are likely to take the hardest hits on the field. Players in 1,500 youth teams have worn the helmet.

    B
When people find out my son Sam is a competitive mathlete, they usually ask if my husband and I are “math people”. The answer is definitely not. We were both decent math students, but nothing like Sam, who participates in math competitions and spends most of his spare time doing or thinking about math.
However, ninth grade was tough for Sam. He left the world of middle school math, where he was kind of a big fish, and started swimming with the high school kids. To prepare for a competition, he took multiple practice tests, which were sometimes as long as three hours. In the end, he didn’t do as well as he’d hoped in the most recent competition and was rejected by a math camp he’d applied to.
One day, he wandered into my office, clearly depressed. “I don’t know why I didn’t do better,” he said, flopping down into a chair. “Maybe I should just quit.”
I quite understood his feeling. “You can always quit. The only person it really matters to is you, and if it isn’t important to you anymore, then quit.”
Sam sighed, “I don’t want to quit. I just feel like the whole year’s been a waste. Maybe I’m not good enough.”
There it was. The thought always haunts us all that we just aren’t good enough, and that all our hard work won’t matter in the end because we don’t have “it", something we need to turn our effort into success. Actually, it is absolutely not. We should learn to commit ourselves to something because it’s beautiful and worth our while, not because we’re certain we’ll succeed. We can’t control the outcome, only our input. To devote time to something with no guarantee of success is risky and terrifying. But, so is everything.
    4. What do we know about Sam’s study in high school?
    A. He was struggling with math. B. He was a big fish in competitions.
    C. He took practice tests every day. D. He was a member in the math camp.
    5. Which of the following words can best describe Sam?
    A. Confident but stubborn. B. Humorous and persistent.
    C. Ambitious and considerate. D. Hard-working but hesitant.
    6. Which word can replace the underlined word “haunts” in the last paragraph?
    A. Scares. B. Bothers. C. Inspires. D. Impresses.
    7. What does the author try to tell us?
    A. No pains, no gains. B. There is no end to learning.
    C. Knowledge starts with practice. D. Process is more important than results.
In the end, he didn’t do as well as he’d hoped in the most recent competition and was rejected by a math camp he’d applied to. 故选A项。
根据第二段中的he took multiple practice tests, which were sometimes as long as three hours 可知,萨姆学习很努力。 Maybe I should just quit. I don’t want to quit.
根据画线词后面的that we just aren’t good enough, and that all our hard work won’t matter in the end because we don’t have “it”, something we need to turn our effort into success可知,作者提到的想法都是消极的想法。

A United States Coast Guard facility was attacked in 2019. Its monitoring systems, cameras, and doors all stopped working. The facility shut down for 30 hours. The source of the attack? An employee had opened an e-mail and clicked the link inside, which contained malware, a type of software designed to damage computer networks. This is what we call cyberattack and it is becoming more common.
A U.S. government agency, called the National Security Agency, or NSA, works to protect the country’s computer networks from these attacks. But the NSA has a problem: There aren’t enough people trained to do cybersecurity. According to a 2017 report from Cybersecurity Ventures, there will be 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs by 2021.To address the shortage, the NSA and the National Science Foundation sponsor cybersecurity camps for elementary, middle, and high school students.
The first camp opened in 2014. Today, there are some 150 of them around the country. All are free for students to attend. Ibrahim Baggili runs such a camp at the University of New Haven. There, students learn the basics of programming using Python, the coding language favored by many hackers.
In one activity, students investigate a crime scene — a computer where intentionally harmful code was used. Physical clues lead them to a Twitter account. And they must decrypt(解密) a message posted to the account.
“Cybersecurity is not a fixed thing,” Baggili says. “Every day, you’re going to be facing different kinds of problems. Someone is going to attack you, and you’ll have to defend yourself.”
    8. What was the cause of the shutdown of a U.S. Coast Guard facility?
    A. It was attacked by an employee. B. Its computer network was attacked.
    C. Its monitoring systems stopped working. D. An employee opened an e-mail accidentally.
    9. Why does the NSA help to build cybersecurity camps?
    A. To deal with the shortage of IT workers. B. To make students’ school life more colorful.
    C. To encourage more people to do cybersecurity. D. To provide more job opportunities for students.
    10. What do we know about Ibrahim Baggili?
    A. He dislikes fixing problems every day. B. He thinks cybersecurity is challenging.
    C. He teaches Python at the University of New Haven. D. His computer was attacked by intentionally harmful code.
    11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Ibrahim Baggili: a Pioneer in Cybersecurity B. NSA: an Agency to Protect Computer Networks
    C. Cybersecurity Camps: a Way to Fix Cyberattacks D. Cyberattacks: a New Challenge to Human Beings
An employee had opened an e-mail and clicked the link inside, which contained malware和This is what we call cyberattack可知,美国海岸警卫队一处设施关闭的原因是网络受到了攻击。故选B项。
There aren’t enough people trained to do cybersecurity.
考生容易根据第二段中的To address the shortage而误选A项。
Cybersecurity is not a fixed thing和“Every day, you’re going to be facing different kinds of problems. Someone is going to attack you, and you’ll have to defend yourself.”

Several studies have linked sugar to health problems, but researchers from Yale found that sucralose, a common zero-calorie artificial sweetener, can also potentially have negative health impacts when combined with carbs which is short for carbohydrates(碳水化合物).
Sucralose is found in low-calorie sodas and thousands of baked and fried goods, many of which also contain carbs. A study published in the journal Cell Metabolism this month found that consuming sucralose with carbs could decrease the body’s insulin(胰岛素) sensitivity and the brain’s response to sugar.
In the study, researchers gave 45 healthy adults who did not regularly consume low-calorie sweeteners three different kinds of sweetened beverages. One group was given a beverage sweetened with sucralose. The second group was given an equally sweet beverage(饮料) with table sugar. The third group had a beverage with the artificial sweetener and a tasteless carbohydrate called maltodextrin(麦芽糊精).
Participants drank seven of these beverages over the course of two weeks, and no changes were observed in the group drinking sucralose alone or sugar. Researchers found that only when artificial sweeteners were combined with carbohydrates did the subjects’ insulin sensitivity and brain response to sugar become impaired.
Because the study included a small sample size that lasted only two weeks, it’s hard to say exactly what kind of long-term impact those changes could have on people’s health, but it’s “probably naive” to think artificial sweeteners don’t cause harm, said senior author Dana Small, director of Yale’s Modern Diet and Physiology Research Center.
Small said, “If you’re going to consume artificial sweeteners, don’t have your diet soda with french fries. Have the diet soda by itself.”
    12. What do we know about sucralose according to the text?
    A. It is created by human beings. B. It does harm to people’s health.
    C. It is a common kind of zero-calorie sugar. D. It can only be found in low-calorie sodas.
    13. How did the researchers get the findings?
    A. By analyzing data. B. By carrying out interviews.
    C. By conducting an experiment. D. By tracking participants’ lifestyles.
    14. What is the limitation of the study published in the journal Cell Metabolism?
    A. There are only three groups. B. The number of the participants is small.
    C. Participants didn’t drink enough beverages. D. Researchers didn’t observe changes in the first two groups.
    15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
    A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Education. D. Technology.
Several studies have linked sugar to health problems, but researchers from Yale found that sucralose, a common zero-calorie artificial sweetener, can also potentially have negative health impacts when combined with carbs which is short for carbohydrates.
句式分析:本句由but连接的两个分句组成,其中but后面的分句中,that sucralose…can also potentially have negative health impacts when combined with carbs which is short for carbohydrates为宾语从句,从句中的主句为sucralose can also potentially have negative health impacts, a common zero-calorie artificial sweetener为同位语,when combined with carbs 为状语,which is short for carbohydrates为which引导的定语从句,作carbs的定语。
故选A项。
In the study, researchers gave 45 healthy adults…One group was given...The second group…The third group.
Because the study included a small sample size that lasted only two weeks, it’s hard to say exactly what kind of long-term impact those changes could have on people’s health
Archeologists have uncovered the hones of dozens of mammoths near Mexico City, Mexico. The fossils were found under an airport that’s under construction. In October, Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History began digging at the site. 16 Experts say there are many more in the ground. “There are too many, there are hundreds,” says the institute’s Pedro Sanchez Nava. Archeologists have been able to excavate(挖掘) about 10 mammoths a month since their work began. They will continue to dig until 2022, when construction at the airport is completed. So far, nothing has been found that would require work on the airport to stop.
Mammoths were huge, elephant-like herbivores(食草动物). They disappeared from the region that is now Mexico some 10,000 years ago and became extinct around 4,000 years ago. 17
Some bones were found on the shores of an ancient body of water. The large, shallow lake is gone, but it was once surrounded by grass and reeds(芦苇). 18 “It was like paradise for them,” Sánchez Nava says.
The excavations are happening about six miles from San Antonio Xahuento, where mammoth fossils were found last year. Scientists discovered two pits(深坑) there that were six feet deep. They were dug by humans, about 15,000 years ago. 19 People may have chased the animals into these traps. The bones of 14 animals were found in them.
At the new site, the mammoths probably died after getting stuck in mud. Sánchez Nava says it’s possible that humans chased the animals into the soft earth. After doing so, they may have eaten the mammoths. The large number of fossils indicates that prehistoric humans may have regularly eaten mammoths. 20
    A. In fact, it may have been part of their daily diet.
    B. The new fossils could reveal why the species died out.
    C. Scientists believe hunters used them to trap mammoths.
    D. Mammoth bones have always been so numerous in the area.
    E. The remains will allow scientists to research how mammoths fed.
    F. Since then, archeologists have excavated the bones of 60 mammoths.
    G. This attracted mammoths, each of which ate up to 330 pounds of plants every day.
Experts say there are many more in the ground.
They disappeared…and became extinct around 4,000 years ago.
根据设空处前一句中的it was once surrounded by grass and reeds,尤其是该句中的grass and reeds这一关键信息可推断,G项(这吸引了猛犸象,每只猛犸象每天吃多达330磅植物)符合语境,且G项中的指示代词This指代前文内容,plants与前文的grass and reeds相呼应。
Scientists discovered two pits there that were six feet deep. They were dug by humans, about 15,000 years ago.

    Dear Terry,
I’m writing to ask whether you could do me a favor.
Fortunately, I was chosen as a representative of our school to participate in an English speech contest in our city. This chance is so important for me that I have prepared for it for a long time. However, I’m afraid that there might be some inappropriate parts. Therefore, I have recorded a video of my speech which is attached to this mail. Would you be so kind as to correct my pronunciation mistakes and provide some advice for me to improve my speech?
I would appreciate it if you could take my requests into consideration. I’m looking forward to your reply.
    Yours truly,
    Li Hua
在遣词造句方面,高级词汇和句式的使用使文章增色不少,如do me a favor,be chosen as a representative,be attached to等精彩词汇,以及 so...that引导的状语从句(This chance is so important for me that I have prepared for it for a long time.)和which 引导的定语从句(which is attached to this mail)等,使文章的语言表达形式更加灵活多样。
