Created in 1998 by Casey and Shelley Black, the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center focuses on not only rescuing young abandoned wolves but educating the public. Unlike other centers, you can actually walk with the wolves and have exciting, hands-on interaction with them here. And so, we gathered one late winter morning to learn, prepare and walk.
Scrappy and Flora, our wolves that day, were brought to the center when only a few days old. “They lived in the house with us for the first several months. We treated them like human babies, fed them and slept with them,” said Shelley. So, they are totally used to people. However, these are wild animals. For that reason, Shelley and Casey explained, the walk is totally on the wolf’s terms. “We don’t approach them, but if they come up to us, we can touch them.”
With all this in mind, we headed for the woods. We were walking on a logging road when suddenly, Flora, all 60 pounds of her, hurried up to me and raised up on her legs. She was almost as tall as me. As she leaned in, put her huge muddy paws on my shoulders and sniffed my face, apparently she was saying hello in wolf talk.
We walked farther, maybe half a mile, while Scrappy and Flora dashed in and out of the woods stopping to occasionally roll in the snow, dig for this or that and just play. Then we all headed into the trees to a picturesque stream where the wolves splashed, drank and had a great time.
One could point out that this whole adventure was staged and quite artificial. But the purpose, Casey and Shelley said, is to explain the wolves’ place in the environment and, primarily, to let people know wolves don’t have to be universally feared — they really don’t hide secretly in the woods just waiting to eat people, but they’d rather avoid people, for the most part.
4. How is the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center different from others?
A. It trains and educates wild wolves. B. It aims to rescue young abandoned wolves.
C. It raises wolves for commercial purposes. D. It allows visitors to take a walk with wolves.
5. What can be inferred from Shelley and Casey’s explanation in Paragraph 2?
A. The walk can be potentially dangerous. B. The wolves have lost all their wildness.
C. People should get close to the wolves actively. D. The wolves can read people’s mind like human babies.
6. Why did Flora behave like that when she saw the author on the logging road?
A. To express curiosity. B. To show friendliness.
C. To attract attention. D. To seek companionship.
7. Why do Casey and Shelley organize such an adventure?
A. To advertise the center. B. To publicize wolf hunting.
C. To promote environmental protection. D. To clarify some conventional views of wolves.

In 2011, Nancy Ballard went for a routine checkup that turned into something extraordinary. In fact, she was carrying a painting of a plant she’d done when she arrived at her doctor’s San Francisco office. “It would be great if we had artwork like that for our chemotherapy(化疗) rooms,” the nurse said. Ballard asked to see one.
She was shocked by what she found. The walls were dull and bare, and the paint had chipped off(剥落). It was a depressing room for a depressing routine — patients restricted themselves to chemo drips for perhaps several hours, often with nothing to look at other than those sad walls. Ballard didn’t have cancer herself, but she could sympathize with the patients. “I couldn’t imagine how anyone could even think about getting healthy in a room like that,” she says. As it happens, Ballard’s physician, Stephen Hufford, was ill with cancer himself, so finding time to decorate the rooms was low on his to-do list. So Ballard made it her mission to brighten the place up.
She started by e-mailing 20 local designers. “I wrote, ‘You don’t know me. But my heart hurts after seeing these rooms,’” she said. She then asked whether they would donate their time and money to transform just one of Dr. Hufford’s rooms each.
As it happened, six of them wrote back almost immediately. Six rooms got new paint, light fixtures, artwork, and furniture. Dr. Hufford was delighted. “All the patients feel relieved of the pain because of it,” he said. He even noted that his own tone of voice was different in the rooms and that he was better able to connect with his patients.
Ballard was so encouraged by the patients’ reactions that she created a non-profit organization, Rooms That Rock 4 Chemo, to raise money and decorate more spaces. Since then, she has worked on 20 projects, including one in Pennsylvania. “We were in Philadelphia for a ribbon cutting, and a woman was there on her third battle with cancer,” says Ballard. “When she saw what we’d done, she said, ‘I’m gonna beat it this time. I thought I wasn’t going to, but now I know I’m gonna beat it.’”
8. What made Ballard decide to help decorate the chemotherapy rooms?
A. Her sympathy for cancer patients. B. Her passion for room decoration.
C. The good relationship with Hufford. D. The request of a nurse in San Francisco.
9. What outcome does Ballard’s effort bring about?
A. More hospitals will be built. B. Hufford cured more patients.
C. The cancer patients were feeling better. D. Hufford’s chemotherapy rooms got good fame.
10. Which words best describe Nancy Ballard?
A. Loving and devoted. B. Talented and energetic.
C. Rich and generous. D. Ambitious and creative.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Design for Hope B. Battle Against Cancer
C. Donation for Patients D. Decoration in Hospital

You may not like it, but learning English is absolutely necessary if you want to succeed abroad. Not just that, you have to show your knowledge of the English language on one of the two major English proficiency(精通) tests: the IELTS or the TOEFL.
Which test you should take depends on your goal. The TOEFL remains the top exam in the U.S. But the IELTS is gaining ground in the U.S. and it has already been the preferred test in the U.K. and Australia. There are also differences in the tests themselves. They both measure the four main language requirements: speaking, reading, writing and listening. However, the tests are very different in their form and methodology. “Compared with the TOEFL, the IELTS test requires you to actually have a grasp of the language and an ability to use it, rather than simply being well prepared for the test,” explained IELTS examiner Julian Fisher.
The key reasons for this are that the IELTS test requires fill-in answers besides multiple choice(选择题), and its speaking section is done with a real examiner instead of a computer. The examinee is given a topic related to daily life. “The face-to-face interview with a trained speaker of English allows for communicative interaction(互动), which reflects real academic and workplace situations,” said senior exam marketing officer Pang Shuai.
What scores do I need? For the IELTS, a band score of 5 to 7 is fine for the majority of undergraduate and post-graduate programs. For top schools, you will probably need at least a 7. When it comes to the TOEFL, there is a range. It all depends on the colleges. Ordinary schools will let you get by with a score as low as 60. For a top-tier university, on the other hand, you will need to score upward of 100 points on your TOEFL.
12. What does Paragraph 2 suggest?
A. The TOEFL score is preferred in Australian universities.
B. Universities in the U.K. mainly see students’ IELTS scores.
C. The IELTS is more widely accepted than the TOEFL by US schools.
D. In the U.S., the TOEFL score is not as important as it once. was.
13. Which of the following is a difference between the TOEFL and the IELTS?
A. There are no fill-in answers in the TOEFL tests.
B. The IELTS tests focus more on test-taking skills.
C. The IELTS interviews test-takers on the computer.
D. The TOEFL checks four English skills, while the IELTS doesn’t.
14. What does Pang Shuai think of the face-to-face interview?
A. More exams should take this exam form. B. It is helpful in one’s studies and at work.
C. This exam form can make test-takers more relaxed. D. A test-taker can score high simply by preparing well.
15. Which of the following is correct if you want to go to a top university in the U.K. or U.S.?
A. A 7 on the IELTS is probably a must.
B. A score of 60 on the TOEFL is enough.
C. You should take both the TOEFL and the IELTS.
D. You need a 7.5 on the IELTS for post-graduate programs.

Recently my classmates have had a heated debate on if our city should host the Lanzhou International Marathon. Some students agree the idea. They think that there is a great honor to host the event and that it will make people to learn more about our city. What’s more, this event can attract more visitors to our city, where will improve our tourism. Besides, others hold an opposite opinion, think that it is a waste of money to host the event. What’s worse, it may cause great traffic jams and inconvenient to our life. As far as I am concerned, I am in favor of it because it will not only improve the image of our city but inspires more citizens to take part in sports and games and live a health life.
