“Pay it forward” is a new saying which means donating money to performing good deeds without hoping for recognition. As far as the receiver of the money, gifts, or good deeds is concerned, he or she is told only to do something good for someone else.
When Scott, a homeless man, spent his last $15, he didn’t see it as an investment, but it was about to pay him huge profits. After he helped a woman who ran out of gas, she returned the favor by raising a lot more on the Internet.
Emily McClure, 26, was driving to visit a friend when she ran out of gas half way. “He saw me pull over and knew something was wrong,” she wrote. “He told me to get back in the car and lock the doors. A few minutes later, he came back with a red gas can, using his last 15 dollars to make sure I could get home safe.”
She couldn’t repay him at that time because she had no cash with her. “I have been stopping by his spot for the past few weeks. I repaid him for the gas and gave him some clothes.”
Emily decided to do more for him, so she started a crowdfunding(众筹) campaign on gofundme.org, and it quickly gained far beyond its initial $10,000 goal. When it reached $100,000, the fundraising page was shut down for a time at Scott’s request. He didn’t want to be misunderstood, like he was taking advantage of the situation. Finally, Emily said that she restarted it because the public motivation had not decreased. She also added that Scott planned to donate the rest to a good cause.
According to The Washington Times, Scott wants to get a job at an Amazon warehouse and a department manager from the tech company has already reached out to Scott, saying he wants to help Scott.
4. Why did Scott buy a can of gas for Emily?
A. To get huge profits from her. B. To get a job for making a living.
C. To get a chance to become famous. D. To make sure she could get home safe.
5. Why was the fundraising page closed for a time?
A. People had no more interest in donation. B. Emily was too busy to make efforts for it.
C. Scott was unwilling to be considered greedy. D. The goal to raise $10,000 had been achieved.
6. Which of the following best describes Scott?
A. Flexible but mean. B. Caring and supportive.
C. Honest but stubborn. D. Aggressive and demanding.
7. What does the author want to tell us from the text?
A. Two heads are better than one. B. One good turn deserves another.
C. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. D. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Yellow is usually the color of happy, joyful emotions. But according to a new study, not all people associate the sunshiny shade with good feelings.
To find out what factors might play a role, researchers tested a new hypothesis(假说): What if people’s physical surroundings affect their feelings about certain colors? For example, if someone lived in cold and rainy Finland, would they feel differently about yellow from someone who lived near the Sahara Desert?
The researchers looked at color-emotion data from the ongoing international survey of 6,625 people in 55 countries. The survey asked participants to rate 12 colors according to how closely they were associated with feelings including joy, pride, fear, and shame.
The researchers paid particular attention to the data on yellow, and analyzed how different factors — including hours of sunshine and the amount of rainfall — corresponded with people’s feelings about the color. The two best predictors of how people felt about yellow were the annual amount of rainfall, and how far they lived from the equator(赤道).
Overall, people were more likely to associate yellow with joy when they lived in rainier countries that lay farther from the equator, researchers reported in the Journal of Environmental Psychology. In Egypt, the likelihood of yellow being associated with joy was just 5.7%, whereas in chilly Finland it was 87.7%. In the United States, with its mild climate and amber waves of grain, people’s yellow-joy association levels were between 60% and 70%.
The researchers also checked whether associations changed with the seasons — whether, for example, people in a certain country liked yellow more in winter than they did in summer. They found that opinions about color remained fairly constant all year round — even when the weather changed, the data on the yellow-joy association was as good as gold.
8. What did the researchers do before the survey?
A. They went to Finland. B. They made an assumption.
C. They studied certain colors. D. They analyzed some data.
9. Which of the following may affect people’s feelings about yellow?
A. The seasons. B. The length of daytime.
C. The geographic position. D. The amount of snowfall.
10. How did the researchers carry out the survey?
A. By interviewing participants. B. By studying the data collected.
C. By traveling around the world. D. By looking at color combinations.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Finland: A Country Admiring Yellow B. Yellow: Associated With Joy Conditionally
C. Color: An Important Role in Good Feelings D. Color-emotion Data: Collected Internationally
D
Royal Dutch Shell is launching a $300-million forestry program, at the time when an increasing number of oil companies are putting money into carbon offset(碳补偿) plans to meet climate goals. The company will spend the money over the next three years on projects to store carbon, including large forests in the Netherlands and Spain, and will start offering motorists the option of purchasing carbon offset when they buy petrol at the pump.
The executives of the company explained that these carbon offset projects were a new business opportunity for Shell, as well as a way to meet its climate targets. “We believe that over time we will be building up a career, because these carbon credits will become more valuable as carbon becomes more limited,” they said. Shell recently decided to cut its net carbon footprint(碳足迹) by 2—3 percent in five years, which includes emissions(排放物) from the products it sells. The company plans to produce carbon credits from the forestry projects, and then sell these credits to customers buying its oil and gas products, or apply the credits to its own operations to lower its carbon footprint.
Plants absorb carbon dioxide as they grow and restoring forests and other natural areas is considered one of the simplest ways to store carbon. However, the voluntary market for carbon credits based on forestry projects has its critics, as projects in developing countries can be hard to monitor. Shell’s move has also been criticized by some environmentalists. They worried that there was a risk of “greenwash” when companies invested in forestry projects. “There is an entire debate about whether forestry projects truly reduce emissions or not," they said, pointing out that planting in one area could cause deforestation(滥伐森林) in another area.
Shell said it would rely on the third party to insure that its forest program could meet the Voluntary Carbon Standard and strict biodiversity requirements. Mark Lewis, head of climate change investment research at BNP Paribas, said, “Planting trees to offset emissions, as far as it goes, is a step in the right direction.”
12. What is popular among oil companies these days?
A. Studying climate change. B. Launching forestry programs.
C. Working out carbon offset plans. D. Attracting motorists to buy their petrol.
13. How will Shell make profits from its carbon offset projects?
A. By quitting the emissions of its products. B. By reducing its carbon footprint by a quarter.
C. By limiting the oil used by its own operations. D. By putting carbon credits it produces on the market.
14. What makes some environmentalists concerned about the forestry projects?
A. The projects can’t really stop carbon emissions.
B. The projects are hard to monitor in poor countries.
C. The projects may lead to deforestation in other forests.
D. The projects haven’t met strict biodiversity requirements.
15. What does the underlined word “greenwash” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Discount. B. Cheat. C. Decline. D. Change.

Dear Peter,
I’m writing to invite you join us in playing in one of William Shakespeare’s well-known play, Romeo and Juliet. The play, that will be put on three weeks from now, is looking for a young man to play a role of Romeo. I think you are the right person. You are familiar to the story because you have just finished a paper on it. Besides, you had experience in performing when you are in England. What you need it to do is to memorize a few lines and do some practice. It is no doubt that your participation will make the play a greatly success.
I’m looking forward to your earlier reply.
Yours,
