My dog died. Yes, she was very old, deaf, and partially blind. She had long lost her youthful energy. Watching her settle into her bed was as painful for me as it was for her. In the past few months, she had begun to bark at strangers and neighbors. But she used to be friendly even if a child pulled her tail. Knowing her decline doesn’t lessen the loss, however.
My husband had found her abandoned on his farm and brought her home. She was a black and dirty bag of bones who got nervous when we approached. I like to think that the 13 years she spent with us were filled with love. Every so often, though, my husband would remind me that her days were counted, and we agreed that if she showed any signs of pain, we would put her down. No need for her to suffer, no need for us to cling(紧紧抓住). I prepared myself for her departure.
Yet, when it came on a bright, hot Tuesday afternoon, I wasn’t ready. I was angry about the unfairness of it all. I wanted my two youngest sons, who live out of state, to say their goodbyes. It appears as if we could negotiate with death, with fate. It seems to me that no matter what the circumstances are, we always think we have more time. We fool ourselves to prove our behavior correct. We can’t really live every day as if it were our last. It would be exhausting.
We do love our pets, don’t we? They become a necessary part of the family. So I can’t help but cry. I still look for her in my home office, where she slept. I still expect her to come and sit at my feet or to scramble(快速移动) to the front door when one of the children stops by. And I miss my routine of the walks, the feeding and the bathing. I miss her presence and the sense of her being around the house, but more than anything I miss the knowledge that she loved me so unconditionally and without question.
4. How was the author’s life with her dog?

When my grandmother died at the age of 96, there were two things she left behind in abundance — nearly 100 photo albums documenting decades of travel and home life, and a dozen quilts, one of which my mother gave me.
Quilting is the process of sewing together fabric(布料) to make one large piece of fabric. In my family, quilting and sewing is a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. My mother says her great-grandmother would occasionally travel around New York State to sew clothing for other families.
In the United States, quilting was a craft(手艺) that started as a necessity and eventually became much more. In 1862, the U. S. government offered millions of acres of land to Americans who wanted to move west. This allowed families to settle on land that they could eventually own. They often built their own homes and lived off the vegetables in their gardens and the livestock they had. Sewing was very important for women because they were responsible for clothing their families and keeping them warm.
Quilting also became a chance for women to socialize with each other. They would gather for so-called “quilting bees”, where they would meet up and work on one quilting project together. This provided a much-needed relief from the lonely life of living on a large piece of land.
Throughout history, the different patterns of American quilts have conveyed all kinds of information. From them, we can tell where a person lived, what region of the world they originated from, or sometimes a story is told in pictures on a quilt.
Even today, women still gather to quilt together as a show of friendship and a love for the craft, just like the old days. My sister has tried quilting a few times, and hopefully, her two daughters may one day continue this family tradition.
8. What do we know about quilting?
A. It is a lost traditional craft. B. It is a major means of making a living in the U.S.A.
C. It is a craft that has become a cultural symbol. D. It was a way to carry on the American history.
9. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?
A. Introduce a new topic for discussion. B. Summarize the previous paragraphs.
C. Add some background information. D. Praise the U. S. government’s policy.
10. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Working on the land. B. Participating in “quilting bees”.
C. Designing a quilting project. D. Clothing the family.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To instruct how to sew fabric together. B. To show the author’s skills of quilting.
C. To talk about the struggle of women. D. To appeal for the preservation of quilting.

We can video chat with astronauts aboard the International Space Station and watch live footage from the frozen heights of Everest. But communicating with a submarine(潜艇) or a diver is not so easy. The lack of practical methods for sharing data between underwater and airborne devices has long been a frustration for scientists. The difficulty stems from the fact that radio signals work perfectly in air travel but poorly in water. Sonar(声呐) signals used by underwater sensors reflect off the surface of the water rather than reaching the air.
Now, researchers at MIT have developed a method with the potential to revolutionize underwater communication. “What we’ve shown is that it’s actually feasible to communicate from underwater to the air,” says Fadel Adib, a professor at MIT’s Media Lab, who led the research.
The MIT researchers designed a system that uses an underwater machine to send sonar signals to the surface, making vibrations(震动) corresponding to the ls and 0s of the data. A surface receiver then reads and decodes these tiny vibrations. The researchers call the system TARF. It has any number of potential real-world uses, Adib says. It could be used to find downed planes underwater by reading signals from sonar devices in a plane’s black box and it could allow submarines to communicate with the surface.
Right now the technology is low-resolution. The initial study was conducted in the MIT swimming pool at maximum depths of around 11 or 12 feet. The next steps for the researchers are to see if TARF is workable at much greater depths and under varying conditions — high waves, storms, schools of fish. They also want to see if they can make the technology work in the other direction — air to water.
If the technology proves successful in real-world conditions, expect “texting while diving” to be the latest underwater fashion.
12. What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 1?
A. The future of video chat underwater and in air.
B. The frustrations of developing underwater devices.
C. The difficulty of communication from water to air.
D. The current situation of communicating with a submarine.
13. What does the underlined word “feasible” mean?
A. Achievable. B. Convenient. C. Changeable. D. Alternative.
14. What do we know about TARF?
A. It is widely used to find downed planes.
B. It can work well at great depths underwater.
C. It is an underwater machine that sends signals.
D. It can send, receive and read signals from underwater.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Real-world Uses of Sonar Technology
B. Full Water-to-air Communication Closer to Reality
C. A Breakthrough in the Application of Video Chat
D. TARF Becoming a New Means of Communication

Leaving a good impression can be done in different ways, from clothing to posture, and from talking style to body language. Below are several tips for you to begin with:
● Physical appearance matters. We’re visual creatures after all.
Physical appearance is the first clue one relies on to judge who we are. 16 It also means the person means something to us by dressing properly. If it is a business setting, be aware of the dress rule or culture. 17 A thumbs-up here does not mean the same elsewhere. So do the research! Details from any little areas will affect the impression on the whole.
● 18
A fake(假的) smile can potentially do more harm than good in our attempts to leave a good impression. It is understandable that sometimes it is hard to suddenly force a smile. 19 Remember being positive plays an important part in shaping our first impression.
● Look into people’s eyes until you see the colors of their iris(虹膜).
Keeping eye contact delivers a sense of friendship to the people we interact with. Consequently, they feel more connected to us and tend to be more positive toward the interaction. 20 Well, try to identify the color of the others’ irises. Get it? That makes a good eye contact example.
Are these the impressions we want to leave? Stop staring at the ground and look at people in the eye then!
A. What makes a quality eye contact?
B. How does eye contact affect interaction?
C. The requirement varies from culture to culture.
D. Then at least try not to look discouraging and angry!
E. Don’t fake a smile, or people will doubt your sincerity.
F. Always smile while interacting with others, especially with a new friend.
G. Besides, it is a way to show respect by choosing appropriate clothes for different settings.

18. E【解析】本段主要讲述的是微笑和积极性在留下好印象中的作用,且根据本段第一句“A fake smile can potentially do more harm than good in our attempts to leave a good impression.”
19. D【解析】根据空前句“It is understandable that sometimes it is hard to suddenly force a smile.”及空后句 “Remember being positive plays an important part in shaping our first impression.”
根据空后的try to identify the color of the others’ irises可知,设空处应该提问如何进行目光交流。 故选A项。

look like... 故填like。
try to do sth. 故填to help。
故填it.
故填who/that。

Last month our class organized a hiking along the Chaobai River, which run through Hebei, Beijing and Tianjin. Much to my disappoint, I found the river was serious polluted. At that moment, I was determined to do what I could protect it. First, under my teacher’s help, I used the equipments from the school lab to test the quality of the river water. But then, I used the data I had collected it to analyze the pollution of the water. Finally, I write a report on the pollution of the river to the local government. I also gave a presentation in class where I suggested that we must make small changes to protect our water resources.
第二处:disappoint → disappointment【解析】much to my disappointment 是固定短语,意为“令我大失所望的是”。
故在could后加to。
第五处:under → with【解析】with one’s help 意为“在某人的帮助下”,是固定短语。故将under改为with。
第八处:删除it【解析】I had collected为定语从句,修饰前面的data一词,从句中省略了作宾语的关系代词that或which,it多余,故删除it。
故将must改为should或删除must。
注意:1. 词数100左右;
Dear Wiley,
How is everything with you recently? Now I’m very busy preparing for my College Entrance Examination. I’m writing to tell you that I plan to go on a trip to Britain for three weeks after the College Entrance Examination.
I know there are many places of interest in Britain, but I don’t know them very well. So could you recommend some worth visiting to me? In addition, is there anything that I should pay attention to?
As is known to us all, London is the capital and a beautiful city of Britain. So I mean to visit it and learn more about it. I’d appreciate it if you could spend some time accompanying me there.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
本文还使用了些复杂句式,如that引导的宾语从句(that I plan to go on a trip to Britain for three weeks...)和定语从句(that I should pay attention to),非谓语动词短语(accompanying me there)等。“I’d appreciate it if you could spend some time accompanying me there.”和“Looking forward to your reply.”
