China launches satellite t test tech fr space debris management
China deplyed a satellite n Sunday mrning t carry ut technlgical tests fr space debris management, accrding t the China Aerspace Science and Technlgy Crp, the cuntry’s majr space cntractr.
The State-wned cnglmerate said in a news release that the Shijian 21 was lifted by a Lng March 3B carrier rcket at 9:27 am at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in suthwestern China’s Sichuan prvince and later entered its preset rbit. The launch marked the 393rd flight f the Lng March rcket family.
The spacecraft is tasked with demnstrating technlgies t alleviate and neutralize space debris, the cmpany said, withut giving mre details. Space debris are defunct artificial bjects in space, including everything frm spent rcket stages and ld satellites t fragments frm disintegratin, ersin and cllisins. Sme f that debris may cllide with peratinal spacecraft r cause hazards t manned spaceflights.
A 1 cm bject mving at 17,000 kilmeter per hur wuld deliver as much energy as a hand grenade and culd destry a spacecraft, accrding t experts. China started a space debris actin plan in 2000 and has allcated cnsiderable amunt f resurces t research the detectin, preventin and mitigatin f space debris, space fficials have said.
The China Natinal Space Administratin established its Space Debris Mnitring and Applicatin Center in June 2015. The center is respnsible fr tracking waste, analyzing hazards, develping preventin and dispsal plans, setting up a database and cmmunicating with ther natins and internatinal rganizatins.
There are mre than 100 millin pieces f debris that are smaller than 1 cm in the space and weighing thusands f metric tns. Impacts by these particles can cause ersive damage and can disable spacecraft, the administratin said.
Abut half f debris in uter space were created by disintegrated spacecraft, said Liu Jing, a senir researcher at the Natinal Astrnmical Observatries and deputy directr f the Space Debris Mnitring and Applicatin Center. She added that abandned missin paylads and used rcket parts are als majr surces f such junks.

Passage2
Tky must keep in mind wastewater dumping is glbal issue
The Japanese gvernment said the 1.25 millin metric tns f cntaminated water it will release int the Pacific Ocean ver the next 30 years r s will be diluted mre than 100 times using seawater. It said this will ensure that the tritium in the water will be ne-frtieth f the natinal drinking water standard, r ne-seventh f the Wrld Health Organizatin's standard.
But this statement needs a transparent scientific basis. If dilutin is safe and easy, peple may wnder why Japan wuld wait until nw t deal with it.
Japan annunced n Tuesday the decisin t dump the cntaminated water frm the tsunami-crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, with releases t begin in tw years.
The decisin has been met with strng skepticism and ppsitin at hme and abrad. The main reasn is that Japan's decisin is nt based n technlgical prgress regarding nuclear wastewater treatment, but rather because its existing strage capacity fr nuclear wastewater culd last fr less than tw years. Anther reasn is that the Japanese gvernment plans t start decmmissining the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear pwer plant in tw years.
The discharge f radiactive water is clsely related t the quantity f nuclear radiatin and the kind f nuclear radiatin material it cntains. There is great uncertainty abut the speed, scpe and impact f its diffusin and dilutin, but ne thing is sure: the wastewater will mve a large distance with cean currents and marine rganisms, which may directly r indirectly affect the surrunding cuntries and the whle marine ecsystem.
The US State Department issued a statement n its website after the Japanese gvernment fficially annunced the decisin, expressing understanding and disguised supprt. Hwever, the radiactive water that will pur int the sea frm Fukushima will eventually reach US shres acrss the Pacific Ocean. The extent f its impact remains t be determined by scientific research.
The United Natins Cnventin n the Law f the Sea stipulates that "states have the bligatin t prtect and preserve the marine envirnment", and urged that all necessary measures be taken t avid crss-brder envirnmental disasters. The cnventin als says that when a state becmes aware f imminent danger t the marine envirnment, "it shall immediately ntify ther states it deems likely t be affected by such damage", as well as relevant internatinal rganizatins.
Therefre, Japan must cnsider the harm t the marine envirnment, fd safety and human health caused by the discharge f a large amunt f nuclear wastewater cntaining radiactive substances such as tritium, in rder t avid man-made marine envirnmental disasters. It shuld reprt the prcess and results f treatment in an pen, transparent and scientific manner and accept the third-party supervisin f internatinal rganizatins such as the Internatinal Atmic Energy Agency and relevant cuntries, s that the wrld can knw whether the radiactivity f the water frm Fukushima has been reduced t a safe level.
1. Hw much des Japan pur the cntaminated water int the Pacific Ocean every year n average accrding t the passage?
A. 100 metric tns
B. 300000 metric tns
C. abut 1,250,000 metric tns
D. abut 40,000 metric tns
2. Why are many cuntries against the decisin made by Japan?
A. because it may influence the cuntries arund
B. because it prbably destrys the whle marine ecsystem.
C. because it may d harm t fd safety and human health
D. because it may reduce the harm f radiactivity f the waste water
3. The wrd “relevant”in the last sentence means______
A. nearby B. belved
C. strng D. invlved
