Hello, Mr. Jones. I’m Linda Brown, a tour guide at Sunshine Travel Agency. Are you ready for the trip? Well, I know it’s your first time to travel by air, so I’d like to tell you what to do at the airport. Well, luckily the airport is small so you can’t get lost. As you enter, on your left you’ll see a lot of check-in desks. You should go to your airline desk, OK? Once there, show your ticket and your passport to the clerk and place your luggage on the scales. Try not to have more than twenty-five kilograms altogether. Oh... and don’t check in your hand luggage, as you’ll be taking that with you on the plane. Then, the clerk will give you a boarding pass with your seat number printed on it. You don’t have to worry about the departure tax. It is included in the price of the ticket.

Welcome to Climb Summer School, everyone. Over the following ten weeks, you’ll take classes ranging from language, literature to creative writing and communication. Our school was founded in 1983. If you take a look at page 34 in your brochures, you’ll find a picture of what the school used to look like back then. Now, please open to page 56, so we can have a look at the map. Very well. We’ve got three student halls in total, one on the left of the garden and two on the right. You will live in the one on the left — Mary Hall, named after our founder’s sister. The other two are Peter Hall and William Hall. You can see a row of buildings on your left. The building closest to us here at the gate is the canteen. The next one is the gym. And the last building is the study center. I know most of you have traveled a long way to get here. So you’ll be taken to your rooms where you can relax for a couple of hours. Later on, we’ll have our first activity of the day, a mix-and-match dinner. And tonight, we’ll have our very first film night.

W: Good evening, I’d like to make a few announcements before the first performance begins at this year’s Art and Music Festival. Firstly, a short guide to some of the important places in this stadium. There are three stages. Stage 1 is the main stage and is where I am speaking from now. Stage 2 and Stage 3 are opposite each other to the left and right of the main stage. The first aid post is directly behind me and to the northeast of the main stage. The organizer’s office is next to the back entrance. In this office lost children can be reunited with their parents. In front of the office you will find ten public telephones. These telephones can only be used to telephone out, and they will not receive incoming calls.
If you want to leave the stadium for any reason, please use the main entrance at the other side of the car park. And remember to keep your ticket with you, as you will not be readmitted without it. Most importantly, when leaving the area of the stadium, try to keep as quiet as possible so as not to disturb your neighbors, That’s all from me. Next the presenter will go on to explain this evening’s schedule.

Hi, my name is Mike. My most valued possession is my mobile phone, which makes it convenient for me to keep in touch with my friends and family. It is important because it contains not only the phone numbers of my friends and family but also their information such as the address, the date of birth, and hobbies. So it contains a lot of thing. I got my first mobile phone ten years ago. It was very big and heavy and could only make calls. Since then I have changed five mobile phones. The mobile phone that I am using now is an iPhone 4, which my father bought for me as a birthday gift two years ago. It cost 4,500 yuan. It is really a bit more expensive than regular mobile phones. Apart from communicating with my friends and family, I use my mobile phone mainly to play games for entertainment. When I wait for someone I often play games on it. Also I’d like to listen to music on it. I can surf the Internet and then download games, music, movies and anything that I like from the Internet. So that’s why I love my mobile phone so much. I’m too dependent on it. I cannot live without it. For example, if I go out and forget to bring my mobile phone, I’ll have to go all the way back home and pick it up.

M: Hello, everyone. This is the first meeting of everyone who is competing in the match. You have to do the following to train. Five days a week you must run at least five kilometers. Three times a week you should ride one hour on your bike. The swimming practice will take place on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday in the pool at school. The first four weeks you're expected to do all your training on your own. During the final two weeks we'll train together. During your training you should be sure to eat healthy food and sleep eight hours every night. This will help you keep in good shape. All of you have had a medical examination and are in good condition for this match. If you haven't brought the permission form signed by your parents, please do so by tomorrow afternoon. If we don't have the paper signed by your parents, you won't be allowed to compete in the match. You'll be competing against four other schools. There are twelve people here today but only five will be chosen to compete. The five chosen for the team will play for our school in the match, so remember, it's a big responsibility. Make sure you all train hard and do your best.

M: Hello, everyone! I’m John, the President of the Student Union. Now I have an important announcement to make. There are a few changes that have been made to the visit. So, please pay full attention to what I’m saying next. We still have been arranged to pay a visit to the local museum this weekend, but it’s on Saturday. We were notified that the museum wouldn’t open this Sunday due to some special reasons. And we are going to meet in the playground instead of the school gate at eight o’clock in the morning. We will go directly there by school bus. Owing to the very big museum, you’d better wear comfortable shoes for long walks. More than anything, please bring a notebook with you and make some notes. We will have a discussion about it in the class meeting next Monday.
Oh, I nearly forget to remind you of the rules. Don’t take pictures of the cultural relics. But if you do want to take a picture as a token of visit, you can do that in front of the museum. And nobody is allowed to touch anything there, or else they will be fined.
Have a nice weekend!

Everyone has a natural sleep routine. You go to bed and wake up at a certain time. But everyone's routine is not the same. Some people--the early birds--go to bed early at night (around 9:00 or 10:00 pm). In the morning, they wake up easily and are energetic. Others--the night owls--stay awake late (until midnight or later). For them, it is difficult to wake up early. What do we know about early birds and night owls? Here is what studies show.
Teenagers are natural night owls. Also, most need nine to ten hours' sleep a night. But in many places, the school or work day starts at 8:00 am. For this reason, only one in five teenagers sleeps enough. More early birds get good grades in school, but night owls do better on some intelligence tests, according to a study of 1,000 Spanish teens. People with high scores on these tests usually get good jobs.

M: The Martian tells the story of Mark Watney, an astronaut on the Ares 3 mission to Mars. After a terrible storm almost destroys the ship and the base, the crew of his ship believe he is dead. But Mark does not die in the storm, and he has been left behind. Alone on the red planet, he has to survive until the next mission to Mars arrives. While this novel is fiction, in some ways it feels like non-fiction. It is very scientific and packed with details about survival on Mars. Watney is a botanist (植物学家) and engineer, and he begins to grow food and produce water in his artificial camp. The author is Andy Weir, and this is his first published book. In it he has created a realistic character. There is a lot of humor in the story, and the reader can identify with the emotions (although no one can really imagine what it’s like to be on Mars). Watney admits at the beginning that he is in deep trouble, but he never gives up. What The Martian gives us is a realistic look at an intelligent person alone on a planet who tries to survive.

My cousin Sandy lives on a farm, working for her father, my uncle. The farm, which is nearly one hundred kilometers from the city, has belonged to my uncle for twenty-five years, ever since my father gave it to him. He raises a large number of animals, including cows, chickens, sheep and ducks. Sandy thinks life on a farm is very different from that in a big city. She doesn’t always have to worry about her work, and doesn’t have many difficult things to do there. “Most of the time, I’m my own boss, so I don’t have to ask anybody else before I decide to do something. And the most important is, I never have to hurry to do anything,” Sandy tells me. What’s more, she loves not only the fresh air, but also the sweet song of the birds. But she does agree that she sometimes feels bored, since every morning she has to get up very early, and at about half past four go milking the cows. So she goes to bed early every evening, at around nine o’clock.
