M: Good morning, everyone. I’ve come here to talk to you about the company’s new plan to encourage employees to come to work by bike instead of by car. First of all, let’s look at the benefits to employees.
One of the obvious benefits is financial — obviously it costs a lot to buy and run a car, and bicycles are much cheaper. Cyclists don’t have to pay road tax or insurance. And cycling will also reduce the amount of time it takes them to get to and from work. The health benefits of the plan are probably well known. Studies have shown that cycling four miles a day halves the risk of heart disease. Another health benefit is that cycling can reduce stress, so it helps you to arrive at work or at home feeling good.
Well, let me just tell you a bit more about the plan itself. The company will lend you up to a thousand dollars to buy a bike and all the necessary safety equipment and you won’t have to pay any interest or any tax on that amount.
You’ll just repay it over three years. You are allowed to buy two bikes — but no more — with your loan, and that’s if you live a long way from work. This allows you to cycle to your nearest station, leave one bike there, get a train, pick up the second bicycle at your arrival station, and then cycle from there to work.

M: Sydney is Australia’s most exciting city. The history of Australia began here. It is the biggest city in Australia, and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. There are over 20 fine beaches close to Sydney. Its warm summer climate and cool winter have made it a favorite city for immigrants from overseas. There are three things that made Sydney famous: its beautiful harbor, the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. But there are many more interesting things in Sydney: beautiful shops and restaurants. For example, rows of interesting old houses built in the 19th century, and in summer or winter, day or night, Sydney is an outdoor city. Some Americans think it very British. Some British visitors think it is like America. There is some truth in both these opinions, because Sydney takes from both the Old World Europe and the New World America, which makes itself into something that is neither British nor American but truly Australian.

Let me tell you about a trip that's arranged for later this year. It's to Cardiff, the capital of Wales, and it's a very exciting city. This trip will be of particular interest to those of you who are studying history at school, though if there are any spare places, other people can go too. We'll spend a full day in Cardiff. In the morning there'll be a tour of Cardiff Castle, which includes part of a Roman wall that's 2,000 years old. Then you'll join in an activity that'll teach you about medicine in the period when much of the castle was built, the Middle Ages. In the afternoon we'll meet a member of Cardiff City Council. He'll talk to us about various projects for protecting wildlife, and show us some of the improvements over the last few years. He spends a lot of his time talking to the public about what they can do to help. Now for some practical things. We'll leave here on the twenty-second of June and get back to school on the twenty-fourth. We'll travel by coach to Swindon, and take the train from there to Cardiff-the whole journey will take around two hours. And we'll spend two nights in a hotel. The sports fans among you will be happy about that, as it's close to Cardiff's famous stadium.

M: Have you ever seen a small, red beetle(甲虫) with black dots on its back? These little insects, called ladybugs, are harmless to humans. A ladybug does not bite or sting humans. Ladybugs are also harmless to plants, and they do not carry diseases. But how did the ladybug get its name? There are many stories. One of these stories came from the Middle Ages. The crops were being eaten, and the villagers began praying. The red beetles with black dots came and ate the harmful insects. These beetles were named “the Beetles of Our Lady.” The name was shortened to lady beetles or ladybugs. Since then, the ladybug has been known to bring good luck. There are many beliefs about ladybugs from all over the world. It has been said that if a ladybug lands on a maiden’s hand, she will marry soon. In England, it has been said that if a farmer sees a ladybug, he will have a good harvest. Some people believe that the number of spots you see on a ladybug’s back will present the number of children you will have. Ladybugs today can still bring good fortune. If you have ladybugs in your garden, then you do not need to use insect poison to get rid of aphids(蚜虫). Aphids are tiny insects that are harmful to many plants. They suck the juice from the leaves of the plant. A ladybug can eat as many as 50 aphids in a day. Some people buy ladybugs to fight the aphids.

OK, so my friends, they convinced me to go on this hiking trip through the mountains. Eight of us, we were going to go for a week, hiking through the mountains, backpacking, carrying all the equipment on us, so that we could camp out and cook over a fire and everything. We ended up camping out every single night. Two of the nights were really nice. The sky was so clear that you could see all the stars. It was warm, and it was beautiful. But on the second night, we had a huge rainstorm. It scared us to death. You know, we were out there in the middle of nowhere, and we were wet and scared, but it was OK, because the next day was warm, sunny, and all of our stuff got to dry out, so it worked out OK. We covered about 200 miles in one week. We were really moving.

M: Hello, everybody. Today I’d like to share with you something about John Audubon. John was born on April 26th, 1785. He spent much of his childhood in France, where he spent many hours each day outdoors painting pictures. At the age of 18, he moved to the United States. Well, actually, John began his life in the US as a businessman. However, instead of taking care of his business, John was often off exploring the nature. At first, John spent his time hunting for fun. Then he found that the animals around were very beautiful, and he particularly enjoyed observing the birds he saw. He began studying them, trying to learn the differences between the birds and noticing their different behaviors. Therefore, he painted the birds he observed a lot. In 1819, John realized that he didn’t have enough money to pay his bills. He was very upset that he couldn’t earn enough money to support his family, so he spent time improving his painting skills and began to sell his paintings. He discovered that he could earn some money while doing something he really enjoyed. We’re lucky now to have so many paintings of American birds by John Audubon.

W: Well, my name is Cindy and recently, I’ve finished a tour which is not the type of thing I’d usually go for. But because we won it, we didn’t have to pay anything. We didn’t get off to a good start, though, because the bus from the airport to the hotel was awful. It took ages. The trip was all-inclusive, so all drinks and meals were included in the price. The drinks were fantastic! The hotel food was either tasteless or too hot, but the waiters were all friendly and knowledgeable at least. John decided he wanted to take a trip to a museum, so I went along. Actually, I didn’t really like it. It was pretty disappointing. I surely preferred being near the ocean. The beach was amazing and I went there several times. In the second week, John went off on his own into the mountains, but I stayed in the hotel. I once tried going on an elephant ride, but it was terrible. Elephants frightened me, so I gave up. The two weeks went by so quickly. We got back last night and, all in all, I think it was a great trip, really relaxing. I’m so glad we entered the competition.

M: Books have always been an important part of people’s lives. Libraries were important parts of both universities and town centers, and many of the first successful companies in modern times made their money by selling books. Like newspapers, publishers used to have a lot of power and influence, but nowadays, the companies that control digital information seem to have taken over. In particular, e-books have replaced traditional books for most modern readers, especially in big cities, for whom everything has to be easy to carry and convenient to use. Tech companies like Amazon and Apple sell “e-readers” that can contain thousands of books, and their online stores list millions of titles, far more than any bookstore could ever hold. As more and more people buy computers, smart phones, and tablets, the market for e-books continues to grow. Many traditional book publishers and bookstores have gone out of business. For example, Border’s Group used to be one of the largest bookstores in the United States, with more than 600 locations and billions of dollars in sales every year. But after e-books appeared, they started losing money and had to close all their stores.
