Just before Christmas in 1944, a letter arrived at our house in Philadelphia. The postmark was from Tuskegee, Alabama, so we all knew who it was from. We quickly gathered around my mother as she opened it at the kitchen table.
My Dear mother,
I did not get the leave I expected for Christmas. I will miss all of you. Please leave the Christmas tree up until I make it back. I hope to be with you guys by March.
Love from your son,
Clifton
I was 17 years old at that time. My heart sank. I felt a profound sadness that my favorite brother would not be home for Christmas. He was one of the Tuskegee Airmen and was responsible for maintaining the airplanes flying off to fight in the World War II. My mother, being the optimist, said, “Well, it looks like we’ll get to have two Christmases this year!”
After Christmas, my sister and I worked together to make sure we could keep that Christmas tree looking as pretty as possible. This was no easy job. By mid-January, the tree branches drooped so low to the ground that they became a sliding board for the ornaments.
Each day, ornaments would come crashing to the ground and there were new pine needles all over the wooden floor. My sister and I had to took turns to keep sweeping them up. We repositioned the ornaments to the stronger branches on the tree, hoping they would stay on. Each time we freshened that tree up, my sister and I were full of thoughts about Clifton and how happy we would be to see him again. It made us feel that he was close by, even though he was hundreds of miles away.
On March 5, the doorbell rang. I ran to the door and gave Clifton a big hug. As he hugged mum, I could see he peek over her head at the Christmas tree.
“It’s beautiful,” he said. “Thank you.”
Clifton opened his present and told us all sorts of stories about his work in Tuskegee. That night as we slept, we heard a crash in the living room. We all ran to see what had happened. The tree had toppled onto the sofa and there were needles and broken ornaments everywhere. We all had a good laugh.
37.The writer’s family felt very________after they read the letter from Clifton.
A.sad B.excited C.nervous D.satisfied
38.Why did the writer compare the tree branches to a “sliding board”?
A.The ornaments always fell off. B.The ornaments were so high in the air.
C.The sister liked to play on them. D.The branches looked ugly without needles.
39.The writer’s family kept repairing the broken Christmas tree because________.
A.they wanted to make their house clean B.they wanted to share the tree with Clifton
C.they couldn’t afford a new Christmas tree D.they needed something to forget about Clifton
40.What did Clifton think of the Christmas tree? Why? (请用约40词回答)

There are about 250 kinds of turtles. Most turtles live near fresh water. However, land turtles, also known as tortoises, do not swim at all. Sea turtles live nearly their whole lives in salt water.
Tortoises
Tortoises are slow. They have short, thick back legs. Their front legs are very good for digging. Many tortoises can pull their heads, legs, and tails inside their shells. They quickly do so at any sign of danger. Their strong shells can protect them. Unlike most other turtles, tortoises eat only plants. Tortoises hatch from eggs. The mother tortoise digs a hole, lays some eggs, and covers them with earth. When the baby tortoises hatch, they must dig their way out of the hole. The largest tortoises can grow to four feet long. They may weigh up to 600 pounds.
Sea Turtles
Like tortoises, sea turtles lay their eggs on land. The mother turtle comes out of the ocean onto the beach. She digs a hole, lays her eggs, and returns to the sea. When the baby turtles hatch, they head straight for the water. Sea turtles can swim very fast. They use their front legs like wings to “fly” through the water. Although most turtles can pull their heads and legs inside their shells, sea turtles cannot. The green sea turtle eats only plants. Other sea turtles eat both plants and animals. The largest of all sea turtles can weigh over 1,000 pounds.
Get to know different kinds of turtles and compare them.
Live in salt water and _________ very fast.
They use their front legs to fly through water.
They can’t pull their heads, legs and tails inside the shells.
They eat both plants and animals _________ the green sea turtles.
They are slow and don’t swim at all.
Their _________ legs are used for digging.
Most of them can pull their heads, legs and tails inside the shells.
They eat only plants.
They both have shells.
They both dig a _________ and lay eggs on land.
Their babies hatch from eggs.
31.________
32.________
33.________
34.________
35.When will tortoises pull their heads and legs inside the shells?

It was eleven o’clock at night, a large woman was walking towards home. She had a large purse with everything but money. It hung right behind her shoulder. A boy ran up and tried to snatch her purse. The large woman simply turned around, caught the boy by his shirt, and shook him until his teeth rattled.
After that, the woman asked, “Boy, aren’t you ashamed of yourself?”
“I’m sorry,” whispered the boy.
“What did you want to do it for? Your face is dirty. Nobody at home to tell you to wash your face?”
The boy shook his head.
“Then,” the woman shouted, “it will get washed this evening. You are going to remember Mrs. Jones!” She dragged the frightened boy behind her and got to her door.
“Are you taking me to the police?” The boy asked.
“Not with that face! Have you been home to eat yet?”
“There’s nobody at my house.”
“Then we’ll eat,” said Mrs. Jones. “I believe you’re hungry, so you tried to steal.”
“I wanted a pair of leather shoes,” said the boy.
“Well, you didn’t have to snatch my purse to get things you want. Besides, there’s little money in it.”
There was a long pause. After he washed his face and turned around, wondering what to do next, he saw the door was open. He could run, run, run!
In the corner of the room, Mrs. Jones was heating some beans. She did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run, nor did she watch her purse which she left behind on the bed. But the boy took care to sit on the far side of the room, away from the purse, where he thought she could easily see him.
“Do you need somebody to get milk or something?” The boy asked.
“Unless you want,” said Mrs. Jones.
As they ate, she didn’t ask about where he lived, or his family, or anything that would embarrass him. Instead, she said, “eat some more, boy!”
When they finished eating, she got up. “Now here, take this ten dollars and buy your shoes. Next time, don’t snatch my purse, nor anybody else’s—shoes got in bad ways will burn your feet!”

The waves crashed over the sides of our little boat. Rain beat against my clothes and my back. I could hardly see Jerel or Kaleb, or anything else.
Going for a boat ride when our parents made dinner had seemed like a good idea. My cousin Jerel grew up on this lake. My brother Kaleb and I got to see him only on holidays. We had rowed to explore rocky islands, but we didn’t notice the clouds collecting until the sky got dark.
Kaleb looked worried, but I didn’t. Jerel knew what to do. “We need to get back before the storm starts!” He turned the boat around and rowed quite fast. Suddenly, the thunder rolled across the sky. It seemed as if every cloud in the universe opened up. Water poured from the sky. It was above my feet and rising fast.
Jerel yelled, “Kaleb! Come back to the center of the boat!”
Kaleb was holding the side of the boat tightly. Every time he let go of the boat, it shook, throwing him to the side.
I crawled forward until I reached him. “Hang on to me!” I said.
CRASH! Kaleb and I were thrown forward into the icy lake before crawling back.
The life jackets kept our heads above the water until we felt the rocks under our feet — the same rocks our boat had hit and got stuck on. We came out of the water and looked around for Jerel. Seeing him under the boat. Kaleb and I helped him onto the rocks. He had hurt his shoulder.
The sky was a little lighter, but I could feel ice mixed with rain. It was sleeting. “We have to find a shelter!” The island we were on was tiny and the only shelter was the boat. We managed to turn it over, sticking the front of it up. We hid under the boat together.
Soon we heard the voices calling our names. We yelled as loud as possible. I crawled out and waved my arms. A boat came near and my father called. “Are you boys OK?”
Before we knew it, we were home. “I’m sorry we ruined ‘our dinner’,” I said after Aunt Maureen and Jerel left for the hospital. Mom looked me in the eyes. “You didn’t. You’re all safe. and we are very thankful.”
Hours later, we finally sat down at the table with our reheated dinner. We were all warm and dry. As Kaleb recounted our scary experience, I realized Mom was right. We had a lot to be thankful for.
37.What happened when the three boys went for a boat ride?
A.Kaleb hurt his shoulder.
B.Their boat broke into pieces.
C.They lost their life jackets.
D.All of them fell out of the boat.
38.From the underlined sentences in Paragraph 3, we know that ________.
A.the sky was a little lighter B.the sun would come out
C.a heavy storm would come D.everything was peaceful
39.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The three boys set out without telling their parents.
B.Boys suffered from this awful experience in the afternoon.
C.Kaleb was too frightened to help with anything on the island.
D.The writer wasn’t worried at first because he knew what to do.
40.What might they be thankful for? Why?(请用约40词回答)

One summer evening, Sylvie hurried the cow through the forest, following a path to her grandmother’s home.
Suddenly she heard a loud whistle.
“Hello,” a young man carrying a gun called out cheerfully. “I’ve been hunting for birds,” he explained, “but I’ve lost my way.” Sylvie led the stranger through the forest.
When they reached her house, the stranger explained his problem to Sylvie’s grandmother and was invited to stay there for the night.
After dinner, the young man said he was a scientist, who collected birds. “Do you put them in a cage?” Sylvie asked. “No,” he answered, “I shoot birds and put something special into them to preserve them. I have over 100 different kinds of birds at home. Their feathers look as bright as before.”
“Sylvie knows a lot about birds, too,” her grandmother said proudly.
“ Maybe she can help me,” the young man said. “I saw a white heron not far from here two days ago. I’ve been looking for it ever since. It’s a tall, strange bird with white wings. Have you seen it?” he asked Sylvie.
Sylvie didn’t answer. Her heart began to beat fast. She had seen that bird! The young man added. “I would give $10 to the person who showed me where the bird is.”
That night Sylvie thought about the wonderful things she and her grandmother could buy for ten dollars. She also wanted to be the young man’s friend, because she had never seen anyone so charming.
When the sun began to rise, Sylvie quietly left her house and hurried to a huge pine tree. She wanted to climb to the top of the tree where she could see the whole forest.
Sylvie’s face was pale when, at last, she reached the top. Suddenly, a bird with big white wings flew past her and landed on a branch below her. The other white heron was sitting on the nest in a nearby tree. Now Sylvie knew the bird’s secret!
An hour later, Sylvie returned to the house. The young man would give them the money they needed. Besides, Sylvie wanted to make him happy.
But Sylvie was silent. She remembered how the white heron flew through the air and how they watched the sun rise together from the top of the world. Sylvie could not speak. Finally, she decided to keep the secret of the white heron.
The young man went away later that day and never returned.

Tom: 4
Good question. I’ve always enjoyed being a taxi driver and I don’t want to change. But of course, sometimes, it’s not great. I don’t like driving around without a passenger, but it’s better than just waiting at the airport or at a railway station. I think that’s the worst part waiting.

My Dear mother,
I did not get the leave I expected for Christmas. I will miss all of you. Please leave the Christmas tree up until I make it back. I hope to be with you guys by March.

Why? (请用约40词回答)
______________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
37.A
38.A
39.B
40.He thought the Christmas tree was beautiful. Because it was a tree his family had saved for him, a symbol of love.
I felt a profound sadness that my favorite brother would not be home for Christmas.”可知作者的家人读了Clifton的信后感到非常难过。故选A。
38.推理判断题。根据第四段“By mid-January, the tree branches drooped so low to the ground that they became a sliding board for the ornaments.”到了1月中旬,树枝垂得很低,变成了挂装饰品的滑板。结合第五段“Each day, ornaments would come crashing to the ground and there were new pine needles all over the wooden floor.”可知每天,装饰品都会摔到地上,木地板上到处都是新的松针。可推知作者把树枝比作“滑板”是因为装饰品总是掉下来。故选A。
39.推理判断题。根据第五段“Each time we freshened that tree up, my sister and I were full of thoughts about Clifton and how happy we would be to see him again. It made us feel that he was close by, even though he was hundreds of miles away.”
40.根据倒数第三段“As he hugged mum, I could see he peek over her head at the Christmas tree.”和倒数第二段““It’s beautiful,” he said. “Thank you.”” He thought the Christmas tree was beautiful. Because it was a tree his family had saved for him, a symbol of love.

31.________

The boy really wanted to say something to Mrs. Jones. But he failed to say a word as he turned at the foot of the steps and looked up at the large woman.
