It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.

We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.

His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guest room of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. The day starts at dawn on my farm,he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草).I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.

In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. Don't be late for supper,Uncle Paul cried, and keep to the track so that you don't get lost!”“OK!my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的)blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

    Paragraph 2:

    答案

    One possible version:

    Paragraph 1:

Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. This unexpected appearance frightened my horse, which made it run wildly. I tried my best to control it, but in vain. Frightened as I was, I tried to keep my balance to prevent myself from falling off. Fortunately, minutes later, the horse stopped before a river, out of breath, and so did I. At that moment, my dad also came up. Seeing I was OK, he was quite relieved. But it was clear that we got lost.

    Paragraph 2:

We had no idea where we were and it got dark. We didn't know where the farm house was. What we could do was to go back along the previous track slowly. But it was really difficult for us in such a dark situation. Just as we were at the point of desperation, we heard a faint voice from the distance. It must be Uncle Paul, I said. So we cried back with excitement. Finally, Uncle Paul safely brought us back home. What an amazing ride!

    A Vacation with My Mother

I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my motherloving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.

My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we'd ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we'd returned home to get the purse and traveler's checks Mom had forgotten.

David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept:You stand outside the door and play lookout(放哨)while I go, and I'll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go. I had terrible pictures in my mind:Honey, where are the kids? What?! Oh, Gosh...I thought they were being awfully quiet. We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren't about to take any chances.

On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea:Why didn't we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections(反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

    答案

    One possible version:

    Paragraph 1:

The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. We decided to camp along the river. The views there were surprisingly beautifulthe warm sunshine, the fresh air, the clean water. We sat on the grass, enjoying the splendid nature. However, when Dad was about to put up our tent, he was disappointed to find that it had been left in the hotel. Well, Dad had to go back to fetch it to continue our camping.

    Paragraph 2:

We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. Every time we got to a new place, Mom would cheer up like a child. She would get off the car excitedly, laughing and dancing around. Together we enjoyed the modern sights in the big cities, the historical buildings in the small towns and the amazing scenery in nature. When we came back to the hotel after the tiring but excellent visit, Mom would hug us and kiss us on our faces. How sweet she was! Absent-minded and forgetful as she was, she never forgot to express her love to us.

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled(骑行)along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at  home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.

Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. Man, that's a big dog!he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.

Mac's heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶).

Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he'd be easy caught up and the wolf's teeth would be tearing into his flesh.

At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn't think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

    Paragraph 2:

A few minutes later, the other cyclists arrived.

    答案

    One possible version:

    Paragraph 1:

The car abruptly stopped in front of him. Mac rushed down from his bicycle and waved at the people inside the car for help. Paul and Becky inside the car got out immediately to help him climb into the car, in spite of the danger that the fierce wolf was running near. They quickly pushed Mac into their car and closed all the doors as hard as possible, legs trembling and breathless. Seeing this, the wolf still howled outside the car for some time and then left unwillingly.

    Paragraph 2:

A few minutes later, the other cyclists arrived. Mac's friends were shocked to hear the story and very grateful to the young couple. Mac invited all of them back to his home for dinner and he introduced his wife and daughters to his two new friends who saved his life. During the dinner they recalled the adventure and talked about the ways to deal with such dangerous situations.

Though it is one of the faded memories of my life today, there are times when I remember his face clearly, especially his eyes. As he had yellow spots on his eyes, we called him Spotty. He would have been a stray(流浪)dog, until he came to me.

I was seven years old. My dad had just got a new job in Nasik. We had moved into a rented house. It was raining very heavily on the day we moved.

It was a cold dark night. We had our meal and went to sleep. Somehow in the middle of the night I heard some strange sounds outside the main door. I gathered courage and looked out through the window and I was really amused with what I saw outside.

There was a small puppy lying on an old doormat which my mother had put outside the door. It was wet and trembling. At first it was difficult to see the little one. It was the yellow spots on its eyes that made me realize its presence.

It was trying to get under the doormat to avoid the cold air outside and it had managed to get in as I could see only its head outside the doormat. Was it sick or injured?

I felt pity for the poor soul. I went in and came out with an old towel. I went near the innocent one and held it in my hand and wiped the puppy till he had become dry. I took him into my room and made a bed for him with a woolen blanket and a small pillow. He seemed very healthy and comfortable in his new bed as he went to sleep immediately.

The next morning, everyone in the family came to know about the unusual guest.Shall we keep him with us?I questioned my mom.

Like any other parents would, my parents first totally refused my idea but my sister and I convinced them to keep Spotty.

Slowly Spotty got on with everyone and became one of the family members.

    Paragraph 1:

One day, Spotty returned from his daily walk with a broken leg.

    Paragraph 2:

Almost a year later, one midnight we heard Spotty barking breathlessly.

    答案

    One possible version:

    Paragraph 1:

One day, Spotty returned from his daily walk with a broken leg. Appearing exhausted, he came to my room and sat near me, the leg bleeding. I called my mother and she quickly tied a bandage around his leg and gave him food to eat. I was very upset. But the next day, Spotty followed me wherever I went happily as usual though he limped a bit. After this incident my relation with Spotty became more intense. I really admired him a lot for his courage.

    Paragraph 2:

Almost a year later, one midnight we heard Spotty barking breathlessly. We rushed out and saw him barking continuously, heading somewhere. After some time Spotty became quiet. I patted him on his back and came inside. The next morning, my heart skipped a beat when I didn't see Spotty. I searched for him in each and every corner but in vain. And this time he had gone and would never come back. I cried and waited for him. But there were no signs of him and I only saw him looking at me with his sparking eyes in my dream.

John Hyde, who served as a firefighter for 15 years in New Zealand before moving to Australia, is not only new to the neighbourhood, he's also new to the country. But that didn't stop him becoming a local hero recently when he pulled two kids from a burning house.

What he did was fantastic. It was a very brave act. Our family can thank him for our lives. The moment the kids' mother saw what Mr. Hyde did for her family, tears started welling up in her eyes and falling down her cheeks.

However, Mr. Hyde, who settled here six months ago, said he wasn't thinking when he saved his neighbour's son, 5, and daughter, 7, from their Point Cook home minutes before the roof fell.

It was said that the children's mother and grandfather was occupied in housework outside the gate when the house caught fire. As they saw the thick smoke, they were very scared, unable to say a word. In spite of the phone call, the fire engine could not arrive quickly. The two children were in the bedroom. Desperate and hopeless, the kids' mother knelt down, crying at the top of her voice. Because of excessive shock, the old grandfather was in the hospital for a long time.

When there are kids in danger you haven't got time to think; you've got to act,the father of three said.I hadn't met my new neighbours before coming to their help. It's just a different way of meeting them,he laughed. Actually, it was nothing new for Mr. Hyde to jump into a burning building. This time, however, he did it without protective clothing. Later on he recalled the thrilling scene of his fighting the fire.

    Paragraph 1:

Mr. Hyde was in bed when he heard people screaming before 9 p.m.

    Paragraph 2:

I was greeted(映入……的眼帘)by two black and white faces screaming for help,he said.

    答案

    One possible version:

    Paragraph 1:

Mr. Hyde was in bed when he heard people screaming before 9 p.m. He rushed outside to find the kids' mother and grandfather in front of their house, crying that the kids were still inside. On seeing this, he went through the thick smoke wearing just a T-shirt, shorts and no shoes, but unluckily found the door to the children's bedroom blocked by boxes. Going around the back of the house, Mr. Hyde broke the bedroom window with his hands.

    Paragraph 2:

I was greeted(映入……的眼帘)by two black and white faces screaming for help,he said. Luckily, Mr. Hyde quickly pulled both of the children to safety before the fire entered the bedroom. He said it was the young girl's closing the bedroom door that saved her and her brother's lives. Dark as the house inside was, the brave girl hugged her young brother tightly, waiting for the coming help. On hearing John's shouting, the little girl screamed at the top of her voice. Thanks to John's bravery and calmness, the two children were finally reunited with their family happily.

A few years ago, I had taken a part-time holiday season job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I'd begun to see the people rushing by outside. Then an elderly woman caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of step, she moved with deliberation (从容), and there was no hesitation in her gestures. The elderly woman had come into the store along with a younger woman who I guessed was her daughter. The daughter was clearly impatient, rolling her eyes, huffing(怒气冲冲) and sighing, checking her watch every few seconds.

The older woman then separated from the younger one and began to look at the DVDs on the nearest shelf, obviously expecting someone else to help. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title on a piece of paper. It was a bit unclear to make out. Clearly a person looking for it knew a little about movies and quality. Rather than rushing off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it.

Looking back, I think I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment. Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who'd passed away the previous Christmas. As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced her to the different sections: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.

We found the movie, and I complimented her on her choice. She smiled and told me it was one she'd enjoyed when she was her daughter's age and that she hoped she would enjoy it as much as she had. Maybe, she said with a hint of wistfulness(一丝伤感), her daughter could enjoy it with her own young children. Then, when the older woman's turn in line came, she paid in cash, counting out the dollars and coins with the same sureness she'd displayed earlier.

    Paragraph 1:

As the cashier put the DVD into a plastic bag, I walked over to the younger woman.

    Paragraph 2:

The elderly woman moved with her deliberate slowness back to her daughter.

    答案

    One possible version:

    Paragraph 1:

As the cashier put the DVD into a plastic bag, I walked over to the younger woman. Is that your mom? I asked, halfway expecting her to tell me it was none of my business. But she rolled her eyes and said, Yeah. I smiled to show her I wasn't criticizing. Cherish her, I said. And then I answered her curious expression by saying, When she's gone, it's the little moments like this that will come back to you. It was true. I missed my mother still and remembered the moments when I was so impatient as to make her life miserable.

    Paragraph 2:

The elderly woman moved with her deliberate slowness back to her daughter. Together they made their way toward the exit of the video store. They stood there for a moment, side by side, waiting for the rushing holiday current and for their place in it. Then the daughter glanced over and momentarily regarded her mother. And slowly, almost reluctantly, she placed her arm with apparently unaccustomed affection around her mother's shoulders and gently guided her back into the crowds.

Were you Mark's math teacher? an old man came to my office and asked. I nodded.Mark talked about you a lot. I want to show you something, he said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. They found this on him when he was killed in the battle. We thought you might recognize it.

Opening the wallet, he carefully removed a worn piece of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. I knew without looking that the paper was the one on which I had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him. And that happened 20 years ago.

Mark was in the third grade class I taught. All 34 of my students were dear to me, but Mark was one in a million. Very neat in appearance, he had that happy-to-be-alive attitude that made even his occasional misbehavior delightful.

Mark also talked without stopping. I tried to remind him again and again that talking without permission was unacceptable. What impressed me so much, though, was the sincere response every time I had to correct him for misbehaving.Thank you for correcting me,Sister! I didn't know what to make of it at first but before long I became accustomed to hearing it many times a day.

One morning my patience was growing thin when Mark talked once too often. I made a new teacher's mistake. I looked at Mark and said,If you say one more word, I am going to tape your mouth shut!

It wasn't ten seconds later when Chuck shouted,Mark is talking again. I hadn't asked any of the students to help me watch Mark, but since I had stated the punishment in front of the class, I had to act on it.

    Paragraph 1:

I walked to my desk and took out a roll of tape.

    Paragraph 2:

One day I decided to do something different when Mark talked again in class.

    答案

    One possible version:

    Paragraph 1:

I walked to my desk and took out a roll of tape. Very deliberately, I proceeded to Mark's desk, tore off two pieces of the tape and made a big X with them over his mouth. I then returned to the front of the room.As I glanced at Mark to see what he was doing,he winked at me. I started laughing. The entire class cheered as I walked back to Mark's desk, removed the tape and shrugged my shoulders. His first words were,Thank you for correcting me, Sister.

    Paragraph 2:

One day I decided to do something different when Mark talked again in class. I asked the other students to think of the good things they could say about Mark and write them down. Then I listed them on a separate paper. The next day I gave it to Mark.Really? Before long I heard him whispering. The paper did work. Mark listened more and more carefully to my instruction from that day on.Thank you so much for doing that, the old man brought me back to earth. As you can see, Mark treasured it, he added. That was when I finally cried.

It was somewhere between spring and summer, and my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then, I was 13 years old, and always felt unhappy with Mom. But little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.

A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly scent filled the car.

Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. What are you doing? I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we'd be stuck there, so far from home. But that wasn't the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. It'll just be a minute, she called back through the open windows.

My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared, empty-handed.

Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, Do you know someone there? She shook her head. Then what did you do with the flowers? She smiled slightly, I gave them to the receptionist. What? She laughed at my confusion. I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn't gotten any in a while.

I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again, Did you leave your name? To this she answered instantly,No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank you for me.

Suddenly, still thinking about Mom's deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.

    Paragraph 1:

We were worrying about what could be done.

    Paragraph 2:

As we drove along,a flower shop came into sight on the road.

    答案

    One possible version:

    Paragraph 1:

We were worrying about what could be done. But after waiting in vain for a considerable time, Mom and I decided to walk back the road to the nursing home and seek help. God knows how far we had driven! When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, talking about how great that day was. It amazed me what random actions of kindness could mean to the people who received it. While we were laughing and talking merrily, the garage got our car repaired.

    Paragraph 2:

As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road. I paced quickly into the flower shop, where a bunch of flowers glowing red in full bloom caught my eye. Having witnessed the effect of kindness, I decided to send Mom the sweet flowers. Soon, the heavenly scent filled the car again. Mom tried to conceal her excitement, but the glittering tears failed her. Through this trip, I discovered that, despite my occasional anger towards her, I actually felt proud of her. This was the trip of my life.

For many years, I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about and trying to get ready for school.

Hurry up!You'll be late for school, my mother called to me.

I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books?

Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.

But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn't afford tuition (学费). My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought,There goes my diploma.

Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn't want her to live her life with regret. I didn't give up hope of her being back to school in some way.

One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. That's the answer, I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I'll just sign her up for night school.

Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said,Mrs. Schantz, why don't you come back to school?

I laughed,There's no way! I'm 55! But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. This is only an experiment, I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

    Paragraph 1:

It was exciting to go to school again but

    Paragraph 2:

Linda and I saw each other through the time.

    答案

    One possible version:

    Paragraph 1:

It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game. Sitting in a classroom full of kids was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging. During the day, I was still a busy married woman having loads of housework to do. In the evening, I was a hard-working student working on my courses. To my surprise, both Linda and I did very well in night school. I went back again the next semester, and my grades steadily improved.

    Paragraph 2:

Linda and I saw each other through the time. When I was down, Linda encouraged me,Mom, you can't quit now! And when she was down, I encouraged her. I have to say it was a time which was really hard on both of us. But neither of us gave up. At last, I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost all of my classmates voted for me to be the class speaker, and I got a $3,000 college scholarship. The unfinished business in my dreams was eventually finished.

Jatin and his younger sister, Neha, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯着他们).

One day, Jatin took Neha's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Neha agreed and the two decided to share Jatin's running shoes. Neha's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Jatin. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Jatin often arrived late and was warned by the school.

A long-distance race was going to be held for the boys in the city. When Jatin learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

The day of race arrived. Jatin had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Neha and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞)with Jatin from behind and Jatin crashed to the ground.

    答案

    One possible version:

    Paragraph 1:

Jatin looked up and he saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this crucial point, Jatin clenched his teeth, jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. Finally, he was the fourth one to dash across the finish line. Jatin couldn't help sobbing at the thought of letting his sister down. But much to his surprise, the runner who collided with him was disqualified for breaking the rule and Jatin won third prize. Jatin felt overjoyed and relieved during the award ceremony, holding the shoes close to his chest.

    Paragraph 2:

Filled with pleasure, Jatin walked home in no time. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news. On his arrival, Jatin found Neha was walking outside nervously and anxiously. Neha, see what I have got for you, Jatin said excitedly, taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Neha saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Jatin. Thank you! Jatin. Tears of joy welled up in their eyes as the brother and the sister hugged tightly together.
