      To develop a better understanding of the use of past continuous tense

      To understand the use of ‘when’ and ‘while’

    Teaching Procedures

    STEP 1 Reviewing the structure of past continuous tense

    Ask the students what we learned yesterday to review the structure of past continuous tense.

    STEP 2 Finding sentences

    Read the passage below; find how many sentences are written in this tense.

    There was a robbery at 151 River Street yesterday afternoon. Someone broke into every flat in the building when all were out.

    The man in Flat 1 wasn’t home. He was washing his clothes at the laundry ( 洗衣店 ). The woman in Flat 2 wasn’t home either. She was visiting a friend in the hospital. The people in Flat 3 were gone. They were having a picnic at the beach. The man in Flat 4 was out. He was playing tennis in the park. The college students in Flat 5 were away. They were watching a football game. And the elderly lady in Flat 6 was out of town. She was visiting her grandchild.

    Yesterday certainly was an unfortunate day for the people at 151 River Street. They had no idea that while they were away, robbers broke into every apartment in the building.

    STEP 3 Eliciting the structures with ‘when’ or ‘while’

    Raise some questions about this passage to elicit the structures with ‘when’ or ‘while’.

    What was the man in Flat doing when the robbery happened?

    While the college students in Flat 5 were watching a football game, what was the woman in Flat 2 doing?

    When sb.+ did sth., sb. was/were doing sth.

    While sb.+ was/were doing sth., sb. was/were doing sth.

    While/ when sb. was/were doing something. Sb. did sth.

    Write the structure on the board.

    It is still difficult for the students to understand the structure. So it is important to give them more examples to help them understand it.

     Get them to read the sentences in Part B, Page 101.

    STEP 4 Explaining when we should use ‘while’ or ‘when’

    Give more examples and then explain when we should use ‘while’ or ‘when’.

    Emily was doing her homework while Steven was doing his project.

    两个长动作同时进行

    The light went out while Emily and Steven were working.

    一个短动作(主句)在一个长动作(从句)的过程中发生。

    When the phone rang, I was reading in my room.

    短动作(从句)发生时,一个长动作(主句)当时正在进行。

    We can also use the following diagrams to help. 

      While my mother was cooking, my father was helping her. (强调同时)

    While / When my mother was cooking, my father came in. (强调短动作发生了)

    When my father came in, my mother was cooking. (强调长动作正在发生)

    STEP 5 Completing the exercises on Page 101

    Get the students to complete the exercises on Page 101. Check the answers.

    STEP 6 Doing some consolidate exercises

    A. Fill in the blanks with the proper forms of the given verbs.

    4. One day, he __________ (lie) on the grass and _________ (look ) at the beautiful sky when he fell asleep and had a very strange dream.

    5. I ______________(search) the World Wide Web.

    6. --- What ________ you _______ (do) during the Spring Festival?

    --- I ____________ (visit) Thailand at that time.

    7. When Simon arrived, Amy ____________ (read) a book.

    8. We ______________ (clap) our hands while the performers _____________ (march) across the park.

    9. ---Why didn’t go to the party yesterday?

      --- I _____________(wait) for a important call from Shanghai.

    10. When he ______________ (draw) a picture, the telephone rang.

    B. Translate the following sentences into English, using past continuous tense.

    1.我妈妈正做饭时,我爸爸在看报纸。While my mother was cooking, my father was reading newspapers.

    2.当老师进教室的时候,学生们很吵闹。When the teacher came in the classroom, the students were making a great noise.

    3.当孩子们正上课时,地震发生了。 While/ When the children were having lessons, the earthquake started.

    4.当我在购物时,我突然听到一声像打雷一样的巨响。When/While I was doing some shopping, I suddenly heard a loud noise like thunder.

    5.丹尼尔在滚雪球的时候,摔倒了。While Daniel was making a snowball, he fell over.

    STEP 7 Homework

    Finish off the exercises in the books
