Smetimes the best way fr students t learn isn’t frm a teacher—it’s frm anther student.A new learning prgram pairs students having difficulty in reading at Handley High Schl with struggling readers at Quarles Elementary Schl t help them imprve their reading and writing skills while wrking tgether.“It builds their cnfidence reading with ther students,” said Jessica Cavalier,a reading expert at Handley.“There’s an understanding between the lder and yunger students because they bth struggle.”
Eight students frm Handley began visiting Quarles twice a week t wrk with struggling① furth-graders.The furth-graders taking part in the prgram were picked by their teachers and reading experts at the schl.Fr 30 minutes,the students read tgether in Quarles’ library,wrking with the same “reading buddy②” each week.“They’re building relatinships,” said Cavalier.“We’re seeing sme prgress.” Handley freshman③ Nemi Lpez said each week she picked bks she thinks her reading buddy,Emily Gmez,wuld like.“We like t read tgether,” she said,adding that she has seen Emily’s reading skills imprve ver the past few mnths.Emily said she liked reading with Nemi because “she makes me laugh by telling jkes.”
