I grew up withut a father. Well, srt f. My parents divrced(离婚) in the 1960s when I was a small child, and I stayed with my mther in Ls Angeles. My father remarried and mved t a small suburb f Atlanta. Fr ne mnth ut f the year in the summer, I wuld fly back and spend time with my dad, s I had a father at times.
Further, I had a series f stepfathers wh ranged frm wnderful guys t alchlics t dangerus individuals. Having lived thrugh such experiences, I find it amusing when peple say that children really need a father in the hme. Well, if he is a gd father and a gd man, then I agree cmpletely. If he is nt, then the child might actually be better ff withut him. We dn't just need fathers—we need gd fathers.
I feel it fair t say I ended up a very successful adult, at least that's what peple tell me. S hw did I d it? I think it started with me having a bit f a chip n my shulder. Nrmally this is nt a gd thing, but in my case it was rcket fuel fr achievement. Nt having a father in my life gave me smething t prve, and it mtivated me in an “I'll shw yu” way.
I als tried very hard, even as a little by t be selfsufficient. And that means I did nt rely upn my parents except t the extent necessary. This kind f independence I believe is highly missed in this age f highly managed children with “helicpter” parents hvering(盘旋) abve them cnstantly.
I als think I never wanted nt having a father in my life t be an excuse fr myself. We make and allw excuses cnstantly these days, but I just never felt that feeling srry fr myself was ging t get me anywhere, I think if children can adpt such mindsets early in their lives it can be helpful.
