Japan is aging faster than any other nation. By the end of this decade, there will be three retirees for every child under 15 and before long, one in six people will be over 80. Its population will soon be falling by nearly a million people every year and some people predict that, some time in the next century, the last Japanese person will die. Other countries are encouraging immigration to deal with their demographic woes. But not Japan, which is using different ways to reduce pressure put on health care and social services.

The Toto-made toilet, common in Japanese hotels, can push up to help the elderly. Now Toto is working with Daiwa House, Japan’s largest house builder, to equip toilets for retirees. These have medical sensors that measure blood sugar levels, the blood pressure and body fat of the user. The data is emailed to the local GP through a built-in internet device (装置). So make sure you eat your greens and stay regular, or the doctor will be in touch.

The over-75s account for more than a quarter of the deaths in car accidents on Japanese roads. Toyota is working with Professor Kawashima, who developed brain training games for Nintendo, to create intelligent cars that monitor brain activity in the elderly. Other technologies could also work to keep elderly drivers cautious.

Japan has twice as many pets as it has children. But real animals are difficult to look after as their owners age. Paro is a furry white baby seal robot which responds to petting by moving its tail and opening and closing its eyes. It shows emotions such as surprise, happiness and anger, and has sold well in nursing homes where it is reported to stimulate (刺激) responses among those with dementia (痴呆).

   Japan’s Institute of Physical and Chemical Research has developed Riba, a nursing care robot that can lift the elderly out of bed.

“I think the ‘always on’ life is probably even worse than having a poor diet,” says Peter Neby, the founder of Punkt, a Swiss consumer electronics company. That's why his company makes easy-to-use devices that do one thing very well, but nothing more, and allow you to focus on "having a life and living”.

      Punkt’s new product, the MP01, is a back-to-basic mobile phone. Launched at the London Design Festival and designed by British industrial designer Jasper Morrison, the phone’s back is gently inclined(倾斜的), which makes it easy to hold. But it’s the MP01's functional simplicity that sets it apart. Users can make calls and send texts, receive calls and texts, check a calendar for dates and store 3,000 contacts in the address book. And that’s it.

      Morrison and Neby believe the tide is turning against technology that endlessly demands people’s attention. “I think we are more aware than before of feeling stupid when looking at our screens,” says Morrison. “We are quite realistic, and we are not out to replace the iPhone,” says Morrison. “But as smartphones develop, there is a place for something small and without those functions.”

      Neby says he has been using the MP01 all summer, but only at night or on the weekend. If he needs to make a call in the evening, there is no chance for him to see any of the distracting information on his smartphone. “With the smartphone, if you are not very disciplined, you will be easily drawn in,” he says.

      And that's what it comes down to. “Taking a single-function phone is terrifying, but it certainly deserves a try for the sense of freedom that comes from doing something rather than staring at a screen and for a change,” Neby says.

Much information can be conveyed, purely through our eyes, so the expression “eyes also talk” is often heard.

Can you recall any experience that further proves this statement? On a bus you may quickly glance at a stranger，but not make eye contact. If he senses that he is being stared at，he may feel uncomfortable.

It is the same in daily life. If you are stared at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry about other’s staring at you that way. Eyes do convey information, right?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex. If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking，as if he tries to control you, you will feel uneasy. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim, since he believes the false idea that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication.

In fact, continuous eye contact happens between lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time, to show love that words cannot express.

    When I was 12, I met Mary. She came to China with her parents, whom taught English in an university. We soon became good friends.
