In the early 1920s, Ernest Hemingway was a little-knwn jurnalist. The idea fr the study came frm descriptins f wlves’ hwling in a pack. Observatins frm the wild suggest that each wlf attempts t hit a different tne. The result is a rugh mixture f sunds that might create the impressin f a much larger grup, which wuld help frighten away ptential enemies. “And s it had been therised that they were actually paying attentin and changing their pitch,” says Patel.
This is very hard t test experimentally, f curse, which is why Patel and his clleagues turned t huse pets. They asked a handful f dg wners t recrd their dgs hwling t their persnally preferred track-first in the riginal key and then in versins that had been changed three semitnes abve and three semitnes belw-t see hw they wuld respnd t the change in pitch.
