When large animals like bears require peratins, dctrs depend n anesthesia (麻醉) t keep bth the animal
and medical team safe. But what happens if a shark in the pen cean needs surgery (外科手术) — fr example,
t plant an internal tag (内部标签)?
The prcess is surprisingly fast and lks very different, explains Carline Cllats, a researcher at the New
England Aquarium, in an interview with Ppular Science. The first step is t catch the shark. Cllats explains that
she starts by thrwing a piece f fishing bait (饵料). When the shark takes a bite, she pulls it t the side f the bat,
where she catches its drsal fin (背鳍) and wraps rpe arund its tail.
Fixing this psitin alngside the bat keeps the animal and handler safe. “It’s nt mving arund, hurting
itself, r dangerus fr us,” Cllats says. “And nce I have that dne, it’s much easier t be able t maneuver the
fish. S then I can actually just physically turn the shark ver.”
Turning the shark ver will put it in a state similar t drwsiness (昏昏欲睡), called “tnic immbility”.
While the exact reasn fr this is still unknwn, researchers like Cllats believe it’s related t sense verlad.
“It is a very helpful tl when yu’re trying t wrk with the animal and, yu knw, perfrm that small
surgery n their stmach, because it’s like a natural sedative (镇静剂),” she explains. “If I had t sedate that animal,
that wuld actually cause a much lnger recvery prcess t let that animal g back int the wild. S ur tagging
prcess is three t fur minutes.”
Cllats uses a part anesthetic t plant the internal shark tag, which is abut the size f a AA battery. When
she cmpletes the prcess, she turns the shark upright and remves the rpes and hk befre setting it free. Frm
start t finish, the shark is usually n the line fr nly five t ten minutes.

Fr many peple, the 40-hur wrk week can be a tiring thing. But new research supprts the idea that the
slutin isn’t necessarily t fcus n imprving yur mindset (心 态 ), getting a better night’s sleep, r simply

Recently, an internatinal team f scilgists asked mre than 140 cmpanies acrss the US, UK, Canada,

clear. Nne f the cmpanies said they were necessarily against maintaining the fur-day week, and they reprted
increases in wrkplace prductivity as well as in incme. Meanwhile, wrkers said less stress and burnut, alng
with general imprvements in physical and mental well-being. Accrding t the study’s rganisers, these results
came as n surprise.
The study’s authrs explained that a key methd t ensure manageable wrklads ver fewer hurs was t cut
ut largely unnecessary meetings. Instead, wrkers depended mre n phne calls, messaging platfrms, and ther
cmmunicatin tls.
Beynd changing wrk prcesses, anther imprvement t efficiency cme frm hw wrkers used their extra
day ff. Peple ften used this third day fr persnal small jbs and dctr’s visits — tasks they nce struggled t
fit int a 40-hur wrk week. They als had mre time fr hbbies, husewrk, and persnal care — all f which
help imprve mindset and health. Fr cmpanies, benefits included lwer healthcare csts and reduced wrker
turnver.
“Nt lsing highly trained persns — in fields like healthcare r teaching — t stress and burnut is
certainly a wrthwhile gal,” said Juliet Schr, a scilgist. “At a time when many bsses struggle t fill psitins,
the fur-day week can be psitined as a key benefit.”
32. What’s the slutin t the tiring wrk week accrding t the text?
A. Better sleep. B. Harder wrk.
C. The fur-day wrk week. D. Mindset imprvement.
33. What can be inferred abut the trials?
A. They were fruitful. B. They failed finally.
C. Only wrkers benefited. D. Cmpanies felt unsatisfied.
34. What des Juliet Schr prbably agree with?
A. Stress causes psitin cuts. B. Fur-day week helps hiring.
C. Wrkers need mre training. D. Bsses dislike the new wrk style.
35. What is the text mainly abut?
A. A new wrk week trial. B. Ways t reduce wrk stress.
C. Hw t imprve prductivity. D. Benefits f gd mindset.
