Hawaii hsts unique birds and these birds are at great risk. The biggest threat is a disease called avian malaria.
Avian malaria is similar t the malaria that humans get, but it nly affects birds. The disease is spread by
msquites.
Befre the 1800s, there were n msquites in Hawaii. But nce they arrived, birds had n prtectin frm
their bites. Sme birds mved higher int Hawaii’s muntains, where it was t cl fr msquites. But as the
climate has warmed, the insects are even reaching these areas.
In 2016, BNM, alng with the American Bird Cnservancy and ther partners, began a prgramme t lwer
the numbers f msquites — by releasing mre msquites. That may sund like a bad plan, but there are a
cuple f tricks invlved. First ff, they are nly releasing male msquites, which dn’t bite. Secndly, the
msquites they are letting g have been specially treated s that they carry a bacterium called Wlbachia.
When male msquites with Wlbachia mate with female msquites, the female’s eggs will never hatch. By
releasing huge numbers f specially treated males, the grup hpes mre and mre female msquites will lay eggs
that dn’t hatch. In time, this shuld bring msquit numbers dwn. But it’s nt easy. The birds that need
prtectin are spread ut ver large areas in the muntains f different Hawaiian islands.
In 2023, the grup began using helicpters t release the msquites. But helicpters are cstly, and they’re
als a risk fr the pilt and passengers. S nw, the grup is testing the use f drnes t deliver msquit pds (吊
舱). Drnes can reach remte areas safely, and mre cheaply than helicpters.
But there were challenges. First, the grup needed t figure ut hw t cntrl the temperature f the pds s
that the msquites culd survive the trip. They als needed t figure ut hw t carry and release the pds.
The drnes delivered their first msquites in April. Once the tests are cmplete, the grup plans t use the
drnes regularly. They hpe the prgramme will give Hawaii’s birds a chance t recver.
28. Why did sme Hawaii birds mve t higher muntains befre?
A. T find mre rich fd surces. B. T seek msquit-free cl znes.
C. T avid human hunting activities. D. T build strnger nests against strng winds.
29. What can we learn abut Wlbachia in the prgramme?
A. It affects male’s mating ability.
B. It prevents mated females’ eggs frm hatching.
C. It is cmmn in mst Hawaiian female msquites.
D. It spreads frm msquites t prtected birds ver time.
30. What’s the advantage f drnes ver helicpters?
A. They are safer and cheaper than helicpters.
B. They can carry heavier lads f msquit pds.
C. They perate faster and cver larger areas daily.
D. They require less maintenance than helicpters.
31. What is BNM’s final gal?
A. T cmpletely remve all msquites in Hawaii.
B. T test new technlgies like drnes and bacteria.
C. T prve that male msquites are harmless t birds.
D. T help Hawaii’s native birds recver frm extinctin risks.

Mdern humans — als knwn as Hm sapiens — began in Africa hundreds f thusands f years ag
and later started spreading t Eurpe, Asia and ther places. Scientists believe they met and mated with

sme additinal details abut the timing f this cntact.
One grup examined genetic material frm three female and three male Hm sapien individuals wh lived
arund 45, 000 years ag. That research invlved the ldest genes frm Hm sapiens ever examined, r sequenced
(测定序列) .
Sme f the genes came frm bnes fund in a cave in the central German village f Ranis. Other material
came frm a wman believed t have lived at arund the same time in a cave in what is nw the Czech Republic.
Researchers estimated the perid f mixing between Neanderthals and humans at abut 49, 000 t 45, 000
years ag. The findings were recently published in Nature.
A secnd grup examined genetic material frm 300 present-day and ancient Hm sapiens. This included 59
individuals wh lived between 2, 000 and 45, 000 years ag. That study, published in the jurnal Science, estimated
the perid f mixing at abut 50, 500 t 43, 500 years ag.
The scientists said their new findings n the mixing and mating f the grups suggested the activities
happened a little mre recently than thught in the past. They believe the cntact cntinued ver many generatins.
The team nted it is difficult t knw the exact nature f the interactins between Hm sapiens and
Neanderthals based n the examined data. The researchers als culd nt cnfirm exactly where the mixing and
mating happened. Hwever, they believe it was mst likely smewhere in the Middle East.
The researchers nted mst mdern humans still have genetic material frm Neanderthals that accunts fr an
estimated ne t tw percent f their DNA. They said mdern-day genetic traits linked t skin clur, hair clur
and even nse shape can relate back t the Neanderthals. Our genetic makeup als includes links t anther grup
f human ancestrs called Denisvans.
32. Where did Hm sapiens riginate frm?
A. Africa. B. Germany.
C. The Middle East. D. The current Czech Republic.
33. What d the tw new studies have in cmmn?
A. Researchers used the same genetic material.
B. They discver the exact time and lcatin f the cntact.
C. Their cnclusins have n reliable basis.
D. Researchers have used ancient genes t learn mre details.
34. Hw des the authr develp Paragraphs 5~6?
A. In rder f space. B. By listing numbers.
C. By shwing examples. D. In rder f imprtance.
35. What des the underlined wrd “traits” in the last paragraph mean?
