Trust me-- I am expeditin dctr
Ever since I was a yung child,I've had a taste fr adventure, but I never imagined I'd be able t satisfy this passin at regular intervals because f my chsen career.
My wrk as an expeditin(探险队) dctr has taken me all ver the wrld.Hwever,my favurite trips, and the nes in which I nw specialise, are thse invlving muntains.Never d I feel mre inspired by nature than when I lk up at their twering peaks and begin t prepare myself mentally fr the challenges ahead.
I trained as a dctr in the UK,but there was little in that training t prepare me fr binding up a brken leg during a strm n the side f a muntain! In fact,I'd say that medical skills cme sme way dwn the list f jb requirements, after endurance,flexibility,prblem-slving and cmmunicatin.
This kind f medicine is a millin miles away frm the cntrlled,germ-free envirnment f a hspital, and yur medical kit basically cnsists f whatever yu can carry,s yu smetimes have t be prepared t imprvise(即兴做).Fr example,I've learned that sme drugs can be used fr several cnditins, and I've even had t resrt t cutting branches ff a small tree t make a stick t supprt a brken arm.
That isn't t say that yu can't train t be an expeditin dctr,n the cntrary, there are sme excellent curses available.Nt nly d they teach medical techniques, but als practical skills such as carrying ut risk assessments, crssing rivers safely and using satellite phnes. The first curse I did included a sessin n expeditin dentistry, thugh I must admit I still dn't like the idea f pulling ut smene's tth!
I d mst f my wrk fr adventure hliday cmpanies, travelling t remte places. When I started ut,these hlidays were quite rare, but they have becme much mre mainstream nw that we've all seen celebrities climbing Kilimanjar r watched reality shws abut peple surviving in jungles.
I d have mixed feelings abut all these peple with large amunts f dispsable incme cming t pr areas just fr their wn enjyment,s I try t make sure that the cmpanies I wrk fr have high ethical standards and benefit the lcal cmmunities. And f curse, turism prvides emplyment, and als pens the eyes f rich visitrs t the hardship that many peple are frced t endure.
I realise that this kind f life isn't fr everyne, but I'd recmmend that all dctrs try it at least nce,if nly t make them appreciate the cmfrts f their usual wrking envirnment!

A. They are less imprtant than practical skills.
B. They are strictly required as the mst imprtant.
C. They are adequately attained in medical schls.
D. They are an underlying part f practical skills.
6.Why d expeditin dctrs smetimes have t use unusual techniques? ______
A. They keep their equipment in a backpack.
B. Things can happen that they dn't expect.
C. They dn't have the resurces f a hspital.
D. They are required by the patients n the trip.

A. they rganise expeditins in the remte areas he enjys visiting
B. they appreciate the cmfrts f the unusual wrking envirnments
C. he wants t make sure that his clients are safe at all times during the expeditin
D. he feels uncmfrtable abut the difference between rich turists and pr lcal peple

Happiness,as I see it,cmprises five elements:spiritual well-being (meaning and purpse),physical well-being (nutritin,exercise),intellectual well-being (curisity,deep learning),relatinal well-being (kindness and genersity),and emtinal well-being (cultivating psitive emtins).As an interdependent aggregate f these five elements f SPIRE,happiness is abut much mre than experiencing pleasure.
As Aristtle put it,happiness is the ultimate purpse f life, meaning hw we spend ur everyday lives is ultimately guided by what we think wuld make us happier. This is nt a gd r a bad thing. It simply is,like the law f nature.Even peple wh are tirelessly wrking fr an imprtant cause,fr example,t get rid f wrld hunger, are ding it because they find their wrk meaningful.Meaning is an element f happiness.
One barrier t happiness has t d with the expectatin that happiness is an unbrken chain f psitive emtins. This expectatin, hwever, prevents peple frm experiencing happiness because painful emtins dn't g away but grw strnger when we reject them.
The secnd barrier has t d with equating happiness with success. It's a cmmnly held belief that happiness can be attained by achieving certain gals, like mney r fame.Peple tend t think if they finally find success, they will autmatically becme happy.
The third barrier has t d with the way peple pursue happiness. We want t be happy fr many reasns. After all,we are cnstantly tld that happiness is gd fr ur health, relatinships, and wrk utcmes.Yet,if I wake up in the mrning and decide t pursue happiness straight,I will becme less happy.
But hw?Indirectly. As is knwn,if yu lk up at the sun directly,yu'll hurt yurself. But if yu take the same sun rays and break them dwn,yu'll enjy the clrs f a rainbw.Similarly, pursuing happiness directly can hurt us;pursuing it indirectly—by breaking it dwn int smething like the SPIRE elements—can cntribute t ur well-being.Starting a meditatin practice, exercising, perfrming acts f kindness, learning smething new,r expressing gratitude fr what we have are all indirect ways f pursuing happiness.
8.What des the underlined wrd "aggregate" prbably mean in the first paragraph? ______
A. Cmbinatin.B. Cnclusin.C. Accumulatin.D. Assciatin.
9.What's the authr's attitude twards hw we spend ur daily lives? ______
A. Favrable.B. Suspicius.C. Objective.D. Indifferent.
10.What can we knw frm the text? ______
A. Being a success leads ne t happiness.
B. Refusing negative feelings helps us btain happiness.
C. Ging after happiness directly makes ne feel happy.
D. Pursuing ne aspect f SPIRE can bst ur well-being.
11.Why is the sun mentined in the last paragraph? ______
A. T make a cntrast.B. T make an analgy.
C. T cnclude the argumentatin.D. T answer the previus questin.
D
When a chunk f ice fell frm a cllapsing glacier(冰川)n the Swiss Alps' Munt Eiger in 2017,part f the lng deep sund it prduced was t lw fr human ears t detect. But these vibratins held a key t calculating the ice avalanche's(崩塌)critical characteristics.
Lw-frequency sund waves called infrasund that travel great distances thrugh the atmsphere are already used t mnitr active vlcanes frm afar.Nw sme researchers in this field have switched fcus frm fire t ice:dangerus blcks snapping ff glaciers.Previus wrk has analyzed infrasund frm snw avalanches but never ice, says Bise State University gephysicist Jeffrey Jhnsn. "This was different," Jhnsn says. "A signature f a new material has been detected with infrasund."
Usually glaciers mve far t slwly t generate an infrasund signal, which researchers pick up using detectrs that track slight changes in air pressure. But a cllapse-a sudden, rapid breaking f ice frm the glacier's main bdy-is a prlific infrasund prducer.Glacial cllapses drive ice avalanches, which pse an increasing threat t peple in muntainus regins as rising temperatures weaken large fields f ice.A glacier "can becme detached frm the grund due t melting, causing bigger break-ffs," says University f Flrence gelgist Emanuele Marchetti, lead authr f the new study. As the threat grws, scientists seek new ways t mnitr and detect such cllapses.
Researchers ften use radar t track ice avalanches, which is precise but expensive and can mnitr nly ne specific lcatin and neighbring avalanche paths.Infrasund,Marchetti says,is cheaper and can detect break-ff events arund a much brader area as well as multiple avalanches acrss a muntain. It is challenging, hwever,t separate a signal int its cmpnents (such as traffic nises, individual avalanches and nearby earthquakes)withut additinal measurements, says ETH Zurich, glacilgist Malgrzata Chmiel. "The mdel used by Marchetti is a first apprximatin fr this," she says.Islating the relevant signal helps the researchers mnitr an ice avalanche's speed, path and vlume frm afar using infrasund.
Marchetti and his clleagues are nw wrking t imprve their detectrs t pick up mre signals acrss at-risk regins in Eurpe, and they have set up cllabratins arund the cntinent t better understand signals that cllapsing glaciers prduce. They are als refining their mathematical analysis t figure ut each ice cascade's physical details.
12.What can we learn frm Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3? ______
A. Infrasund has a majr rle t play in discvering new materials.
B. Ice avalanches are a bigger threat t peple than vlcanic eruptins.
C. Researchers are trying t use infrasund in detecting ice avalanches.
D. Scientists emply infrasund mre in muntain areas than in ther places.
13.Which is an advantage f infrasund ver radar? ______
A. The cmbinatin with ther relevant signals.
B. The accuracy in lcating a certain avalanche.
C. The ability in picking up signals in wider areas.
D. The sensitivity in tracking air pressure changes.
14.The underlined wrd "this" in Paragraph 4 refers t ______ .
A. distinguishing different cmpnents f a signal
B. detecting multiple avalanches at the same time
C. calculating the speed and path f ice avalanches
D. mnitring the specific lcatin f ice break-ffs
15.Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage? ______
A. Frm Fire t IceB. Glacier Whispers
C. Nature is WarningD. Secret f Ice Avalanches
