Recently, I went quad biking (越野摩托车)-r ATV driving-n a dirt track in the muntains utside f Beijing. After a brief instructinal exercise and what seemed like lts f waiting, we put n ur helmets, sped up ur engines and gt nt the track. The sund f the engine raring was thrilling. As I gt mre cnfident, I culdn’t help vertaking ther drivers whenever I gt the chance. Finally, the way frward pened up and I sped ahead f the thers. I turned tward a small hill and raced dwn. Micrplastic pllutin is increasing greatly arund the glbe, accrding t a study f plastic particles (微粒)carried in the air.
Peple are already knwn t breathe, drink and eat micrplastics, and research suggests that pllutin levels will cntinue t rise rapidly. The researchers said that breathing in these particles can be harmful t lung tissue and lead t serius diseases.
Prfessr Natalie Mahwald at Crnell University in the US and part f the research team, said, “But maybe we culd slve this befre it becmes a huge prblem, if we manage ur plastics better, befre they accumulate in the envirnment and mve arund everywhere.”
The research, published in the jurnal Prceedings f the Natinal Acadenry f Sciences, examined airbrne (空气传播的)micrplastics, which have been far less studied than plastics in ceans and rivers.
The team gathered mre than 300 samples f airbrne micrplastics frm 11 sites acrss the western US. These were the basis fr atmspheric mdeling that estimated the cntributin frm different surces (来源),and it was the first such study t d s.
They fund that rads were the main factr (因素)in the western US, linked t abut 85% f the micrplastics in the air. These are likely t include particles frm tires and brake pads n vehicles, and plastics frm litter that had been brken dwn.
The researchers extended their mdeling wrk t a glbal level and this suggested that while rads are als likely t be the majr driver f airbrne plastics in Eurpe, Suth America and Australia, plastic particles blwn up frm fields may be a much bigger factr in Africa and Asia.

Accrding t a paper published in Current Bilgy in February, 2023, scientists designed varius tasks fr a grup f cckats. The first task was getting a nut ut f a puzzle bx, requiring tw tls: first a shrt, sharp tl used t cut the membrane(薄膜), then a lng stick t get the nut ut f a hle. Five ut f 10 cckats were able t reach the nut. In the fllwing tasks, the cckats were bserved picking up tls befre ding the task, shwing their ability t plan ahead.
