Trust me — I am expeditin dctr
Ever since I was a yung child, I’ve had a taste fr adventure, but I never imagined I’d be able t satisfy this passin at regular intervals because f my chsen career.
My wrk as an expeditin (探险队) dctr has taken me all ver the wrld. Hwever, my
favurite trips, and the nes in which I nw specialize, are thse invlving muntains. Never d I feel mre inspired by nature than when I lk up at their twering peaks and begin t prepare myself mentally fr the challenges ahead.
I trained as a dctr in the UK, but there was little in that training t prepare me fr binding up a brken leg during a strm n the side f a muntain! In fact, I’d say that medical skills cme sme way dwn the list f jb requirements, after endurance, flexibility, prblem-slving and cmmunicatin.
This kind f medicine is a millin miles away frm the cntrlled, germ-free envirnment f a hspital, and yur medical kit basically cnsists f whatever yu can carry, s yu smetimes have t be prepared t imprvise ( 即兴做). Fr example, I’ve learned that sme drugs can be used fr several cnditins, and I’ve even had t resrt t cutting branches ff a small tree t make a stick t supprt a brken arm.
That isn’t t say that yu can’t train t be an expeditin dctr; n the cntrary, there are sme excellent curses available. Nt nly d they teach medical techniques, but als practical skills such as carrying ut risk assessments, crssing rivers safely and using satellite phnes. The first curse I did included a sessin n expeditin dentistry, thugh I must admit I still dn’t like the idea f pulling ut smene’s tth!
I d mst f my wrk fr adventure hliday cmpanies, travelling t remte places. When I started ut, these hlidays were quite rare, but they have becme much mre mainstream nw that we’ve all seen celebrities climbing Kilimanjar r watched reality shws abut peple surviving in jungles.
I d have mixed feelings abut all these peple with large amunts f dispsable incme cming t pr areas just fr their wn enjyment, s I try t make sure that the cmpanies I wrk fr have high ethical standards and benefit the lcal cmmunities. And f curse, turism prvides emplyment, and als pens the eyes f rich visitrs t the hardship that many peple are frced t endure.
I realise that this kind f life isn’t fr everyne, but I’d recmmend that all dctrs try it at least nce, if nly t make them appreciate the cmfrts f their usual wrking envirnment!
The authr feels that he has been.
bliged t chse his careerB. lucky with his jb
C. bsessed with his adventureD. inspired by his patients
Accrding t the passage, what can be learned abut medical skills fr an expeditin dctr?
They are less imprtant than practical skills.
They are strictly required as the mst imprtant.
They are adequately attained in medical schls.
They are an underlying part f practical skills.
Why d expeditin dctrs smetimes have t use unusual techniques?
They keep their equipment in a backpack.
Things can happen that they dn’t expect.
They dn’t have the resurces f a hspital.
They are required by the patients n the trip.
The authr wrks fr ethical cmpanies because.
they rganise expeditins in the remte areas he enjys visiting
they appreciate the cmfrts f the unusual wrking envirnments
he wants t make sure that his clients are safe at all times during the expeditin
he feels uncmfrtable abut the difference between rich turists and pr lcal peple

Happiness, as I see it, cmprises five elements: spiritual well-being (meaning and purpse), physical well-being (nutritin, exercise), intellectual well-being (curisity, deep learning), relatinal well-being (kindness and genersity), and emtinal well-being (cultivating psitive emtins). As an interdependent aggregate f these five elements f SPIRE, happiness is abut much mre than experiencing pleasure.
As Aristtle put it, happiness is the ultimate purpse f life, meaning hw we spend ur everyday lives is ultimately guided by what we think wuld make us happier. This is nt a gd r a bad thing. It simply is, like the law f nature. Even peple wh are tirelessly wrking fr an imprtant cause, fr example, t get rid f wrld hunger, are ding it because they find their wrk meaningful. Meaning is an element f happiness.
One barrier t happiness has t d with the expectatin that happiness is an unbrken chain f psitive emtins. This expectatin, hwever, prevents peple frm experiencing happiness because painful emtins dn’t g away but grw strnger when we reject them.
The secnd barrier has t d with equating happiness with success. It’s a cmmnly held belief that happiness can be attained by achieving certain gals, like mney r fame. Peple tend t think if they finally find success, they will autmatically becme happy.
The third barrier has t d with the way peple pursue happiness. We want t be happy fr many reasns. After all, we are cnstantly tld that happiness is gd fr ur health, relatinships, and wrk utcmes. Yet, if I wake up in the mrning and decide t pursue happiness straight, I will becme less happy.
But hw? Indirectly. As is knwn, if yu lk up at the sun directly, yu’ll hurt yurself. But if yu take the same sun rays and break them dwn, yu’ll enjy the clrs f a rainbw. Similarly, pursuing happiness directly can hurt us; pursuing it indirectly—by breaking it dwn int smething like the SPIRE elements—can cntribute t ur well-being. Starting a meditatin practice, exercising, perfrming acts f kindness, learning smething new, r expressing gratitude fr what we have are all indirect ways f pursuing happiness.
What des the underlined wrd “aggregate” prbably mean in the first paragraph?
A. Cmbinatin.B. Cnclusin.C. Accumulatin.D. Assciatin.
What’s the authr’s attitude twards hw we spend ur daily lives?
A. Favrable.B. Suspicius.C. Objective.D. Indifferent.
What can we knw frm the text?
Being a success leads ne t happiness.
Refusing negative feelings helps us btain happiness.
Ging after happiness directly makes ne feel happy.
Pursuing ne aspect f SPIRE can bst ur well-being.
Why is the sun mentined in the last paragraph?
T make a cntrast.B. T make an analgy.
C. T cnclude the argumentatin.D. T answer the previus questin.

When a chunk f ice fell frm a cllapsing glacier(冰川)n the Swiss Alps’ Munt Eiger in 2017, part f the lng deep sund it prduced was t lw fr human ears t detect. But these vibratins held a key t calculating the ice avalanche’s (崩塌) critical characteristics.
Lw-frequency sund waves called infrasund that travel great distances thrugh the atmsphere are already used t mnitr active vlcanes frm afar. Nw sme researchers in this field have switched fcus frm fire t ice: dangerus blcks snapping ff glaciers. Previus wrk has analyzed infrasund frm snw avalanches but never ice, says Bise State University gephysicist Jeffrey Jhnsn. “This was different,” Jhnsn says. “A signature f a new material has been detected with infrasund.”
Usually glaciers mve far t slwly t generate an infrasund signal, which researchers pick up using detectrs that track slight changes in air pressure. But a cllapse—a sudden, rapid breaking f ice frm the glacier’s main bdy—is a prlific infrasund prducer. Glacial cllapses drive ice avalanches, which pse an increasing threat t peple in muntainus regins as rising temperatures weaken large fields f ice. A glacier “can becme detached frm the grund due t melting, causing bigger break— ffs,” says University f Flrence gelgist Emanuele Marchetti, lead authr f the new study. As the threat grws, scientists seek new ways t mnitr and detect such cllapses.
Researchers ften use radar t track ice avalanches, which is precise but expensive and can mnitr nly ne specific lcatin and neighbring avalanche paths. Infrasund, Marchetti says, is cheaper and can detect break—ff events arund a much brader area as well as multiple avalanches acrss a muntain. It is challenging, hwever, t separate a signal int its cmpnents (such as traffic nises, individual avalanches and nearby earthquakes) withut additinal measurements, says ETH Zurich glacilgist Malgrzata Chmiel. “The mdel used by Marchetti is a first apprximatin fr this,” she says. Islating the relevant signal helps the researchers mnitr an ice avalanche’s speed, path and vlume frm afar using infrasund.
Marchetti and his clleagues are nw wrking t imprve their detectrs t pick up mre signals acrss at-risk regins in Eurpe, and they have set up cllabratins arund the cntinent t better understand signals that cllapsing glaciers prduce. They are als refining their mathematical analysis t figure ut each ice cascade’s physical details.
What can we learn frm Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3?
Infrasund has a majr rle t play in discvering new materials.
Ice avalanches are a bigger threat t peple than vlcanic eruptins.
Researchers are trying t use infrasund in detecting ice avalanches.
Scientists emply infrasund mre in muntain areas than in ther places.
Which is an advantage f infrasund ver radar?
The cmbinatin with ther relevant signals.
The accuracy in lcating a certain avalanche.
The ability in picking up signals in wider areas.
The sensitivity in tracking air pressure changes.
The underlined wrd “this” in Paragraph 4 refers t.
distinguishing different cmpnents f a signal
detecting multiple avalanches at the same time
calculating the speed and path f ice avalanches
mnitring the specific lcatin f ice break—ffs
Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
Frm Fire t IceB. Glacier Whispers
C. Nature is WarningD. Secret f Ice Avalanches

In a scial situatin, eye cntact can shw that yu are paying attentin in a friendly way. But it can als mean differently such as when a plitical candidate turns tward their cmpetitr during a debate with a challenging lk. Here’s what hard science reveals abut eye cntact.
We knw that a typical infant will instinctively gaze int its mther’s eyes, and she will lk back. This mutual gaze is a majr part f the attachment between mther and child.
36 It can catch smene’s attentin in a crwded rm. “Eye cntact and smile” can signal availability and cnfidence.
37 Neurscientist Bnnie Augeung fund that the hrmne xytcin (产素)
increased the amunt f eye cntact frm men tward the interviewer during a brief interview when the directin f their gaze was recrded. This was als fund in high-functining men with sme autistic spectrum symptms (自闭症谱系症状), wh may tend t avid eye cntact.
Eye cntact can als be aggressive. With the use f eye-tracking technlgy, Julia Minsn f the Harvard Kennedy Schl f Gvernment cncluded that eye cntact can signal very different kinds f messages, depending n the situatin. Eye cntact may be a sign f cnnectin r trust in friendly situatins. 38 “Whether yu’ re a plitician r a parent, it might be helpful t keep in mind that trying t maintain eye cntact may backfire if yu’ re trying t cnvince smene wh has a different set f beliefs than yu,” said Minsn.
Eye fixatins are brief. When we lk at a face r a picture, ur eyes pause n ne spt at a time, ften n the eyes r muth. These pauses typically ccur abut three times per secnd, and the eyes then jump t anther spt, until several imprtant pints in the image are registered like a series f shts. 39 And it is the subject f current research.
In peple wh scre high in a test f neurticism ( 神经过敏症), eye cntact triggered mre activity assciated with avidance, accrding t the Finnish researcher Jari Hietanen and clleagues. 40 Peple wh scred high fr negative emtins like anxiety lked at thers fr shrter perids f time and reprted mre cmfrtable feelings when thers did nt
lk directly at them.
Their brain reactins als differ frm ther peple.
Bilgical factrs behind eye cntact are being investigated.
Hw the whle image is then assembled and perceived is still a mystery.
Fr adults, lking at peple pleasantly can be a friendly sign f attentin.
Specific brain regins that respnd are being explred using advanced methds.
Our findings indicate peple d feel different when they are the centre f attentin.
It’s mre likely t be related t dminance f threat in cnflicting situatins, thugh.

The vcabulary f tea tasting can seem abstract t the pint f petry. When 56 (experience) tea lvers cmment n a cup f tea, they might cmment n its qi and yun. Keeping that 60 mind, what exactly d tea lvers mean when they talk abut qi and yun? Deng Shihai, an early expert n Pu’er tea, praised its “flavrless flavr” as the highest level Pu’er can attain. Qi and yun are thught t be mre advanced than any simple descriptin f taste, in part because they imply an indescribable sense f cnnectin between peple and things, and even t the 63 (brad) natural wrld. When I was eighteen, I did my first part-time jb in a little crner shp. The wner was a sweet ld man wh always believed the best in peple. He had given us specific instructins that whenever the hmeless man, wh ften hung arund nearby, entered the shp, we were t ffer him tw sandwiches and a drink, regardless f hw much mney he had. Additinally, if it was ht, we were t prvide him with tw large bttles f water. The hmeless man was always quiet and seemed appreciative f ur assistance.
One evening, the sky darkened as thick cluds appeared verhead, casting a frightening shadw ver the landscape. There seemed t be a huge strm while my cwrker called in sick, leaving me t manage the shp alne fr abut fur hurs until clsing time. Just as I was abut t finish my shift, the hmeless man walked in with his usual gentle smile. I was relieved because I knew we had his favrite sandwiches available. I handed them t him alng with his drink, and t my surprise, he handed me a $10 bill, which was much mre than the small change he usually had.
I said, “Oh, it lks like yu get sme mney tday. Wuld yu like a ht pie t g with yur dinner? We still have a cuple left!” But he declined, saying, “N, please keep the rest f the mney fr the wner t make up fr the days when I didn’t have any mney and he still fed me.” I agreed and wished him a pleasant meal. Seeing utside I nticed that it began t rain with fierce wind; the strm was n its way as expected. S I decided t clse the stre as quickly as pssible. When retracting ( 收回) the advertising sign frm the shp frnt, I was

The next thing I remember is waking up in a hspital bed with a dctr standing beside me, asking, “Hey there, yu’re awake! D yu knw what happened? Can yu tell me what day it is?” I struggled t find my vice and muster (聚集) the strength t answer his questins. Paragraph 1:

分析语境和句意可知,画线单词短语“As an interdependent aggregate f these five elements f SPIRE (作为这五个要素相互依赖的……)”与该段第一句“Happiness, as I see it, cmprises five elements…(在我看来,幸福包括五个要素……)” 故选 A
根据文章第二段内容“As Aristtle put it, happiness is the ultimate purpse f life, meaning hw we spend ur everyday lives is ultimately guided by what we think wuld make us happier. This is nt a gd r a bad thing. It simply is, like the law f nature.
根据文章最后一段内容“Similarly, pursuing happiness directly can hurt us; pursuing it indirectly—by breaking it dwn int smething like the SPIRE elements—can cntribute t ur well-being. (同样,直接追求幸福也会伤害我们;通过将其分解为类似精神五大元素的东西来间接地追求它,可以为我们的幸福做出贡献。)”可知,间接地追求幸福,即,把它分解成像 SPIRE 五大元素之类的东西,通过某个元素追求可以有助于实现幸福。故选 D 项。
【31 题详解】
推理判断题。分析语境可知,最后一段“As is knwn, if yu lk up at the sun directly, yu’ll hurt yurself. But if yu take the same sun rays and break them dwn, yu’ll enjy the clrs f a rainbw. (众所周知,如果你抬头直视太阳,你会伤到自己。但是如果你把同样的太阳光分解,你就会享受到彩虹的颜色。)”中提及直视太阳会让自己受伤,间接看太阳则会看到彩虹,紧接着用“Similarly (相似地,同样)”这一词引出后文“pursuing happiness directly can hurt us; pursuing it indirectly—by breaking it dwn int smething like the SPIRE elements—can cntribute t ur well-being (直接追求幸福也会伤害我们;通过将其分解为类似精神五大元素的东西来间接地追求它,可以为我们的幸福做出贡献)”讨论,
“直视太阳”就相当于“直接追求幸福”,“把阳光分解”就相当于“将幸福分解为五大元素”。由此可知,作者这里提及阳光是为了做类比,让人在理解时更加具体化。故选 B 项。

【32 题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“Previus wrk has analyzed infrasund frm snw avalanches but never ice, says Bise State University gephysicist Jeffrey Jhnsn. (博伊西州立大学的 地球物理学家 Jeffrey Jhnsn 说,之前的工作分析过雪崩的次声,但从未分析过冰的次声)”和第三段的“But a cllapse—a sudden, rapid breaking f ice frm the glacier’s main
bdy—is a prlific infrasund prducer.(但是冰川的崩塌——冰川主体的冰突然迅速断裂
——是大量次声的产生者)”和“As the threat grws, scientists seek new ways t mnitr and detect such cllapses.(随着威胁的增加,科学家们寻求新的方法来监测和探测这种崩塌)”可知,从第二和第三段我们知道研究人员正试图利用次声探测冰崩。
根据第四段的“Researchers ften use radar t track ice avalanches, which is precise but expensive and can mnitr nly ne specific lcatin and neighbring avalanche paths. Infrasund, Marchetti says, is cheaper and can detect break—ff events arund a much brader area as well as multiple avalanches acrss a muntain.(研究人员经常使用雷达来跟踪冰雪崩,这种方法精确但昂贵,而且只能监测一个特定的位置和邻近的雪崩路径。马尔凯蒂说,次声探测技术成本更低,可以探测到更广阔的区域附近的断裂事件,以及山脉上的多次雪崩)”可知,和雷达相比次声探测的优势是能接收更大范围内的信号。故选 C。
【34 题详解】
词句猜测题。分析句子可知,句中 this 应指代上文出现的内容。根据第四段的“It is challenging, hwever, t separate a signal int its cmpnents (such as traffic nises, individual avalanches and nearby earthquakes) withut additinal measurements, says ETH Zurich glacilgist Malgrzata Chmiel.(然而,苏黎世联邦理工学院的冰川学家 Malgrzata Chmiel
故选 A。
根据文章的主要内容,尤其第一段的“But these vibratins held a key t calculating the ice avalanche’s(崩塌)critical characteristics.(但这些振动是计算冰崩临界特性的关键)”和第三段的“But a cllapse—a sudden, rapid breaking f ice frm the glacier’s main bdy—is a prlific infrasund prducer.(但是冰川的崩塌——冰川主体的冰突然迅速断裂——是大量次声的产生者)”和“As the threat grws, scientists seek new ways t mnitr and detect such cllapses.(随着威胁的增加,科学家们寻求新的方法来监测和探测这种崩塌)”可知,冰崩会发出大量的次声波,研究人员正在尝试用次声探测技术来检测和探测冰崩。

这种相互凝视是母子之间亲密关系的重要组成部分)”以及后文“It can catch smene’s attentin in a crwded rm. “Eye cntact and smile” can signal availability and
根据后文“Neurscientist Bnnie Augeung fund that the hrmne xytcin (产素) increased the amunt f eye cntact frm men tward the interviewer during a brief interview when the directin f their gaze was recrded. 产素这种激素会促使男性与访谈者进行更多的目光接触。这一现象同样在一些具有自
闭症谱系症状但能力较强的男性身上被观察到,这类男性通常会避免目光接触)”可知,后文提到神经科学家研究产素(生理荷尔蒙)对视的影响,属于对视背后的生理因素研究,B 选项“对视背后的生理因素正在被研究”刚好引出下文内容。
【38 题详解】
根据上文“Eye cntact can als be aggressive. With the use f eye-tracking technlgy, Julia Minsn f the Harvard Kennedy Schl f Gvernment cncluded that eye cntact can signal very different kinds f messages, depending n the situatin. 在冲突场景中,对视更可能和支配地位或威胁相关”承接上文,也呼应后文“说服观点不同的人时,对视会适得其反”的结论。
【39 题详解】
根据上文“Eye fixatins are brief. When we lk at a face r a picture, ur eyes pause n ne spt at a time, ften n the eyes r muth. These pauses typically ccur abut three times per secnd, and the eyes then jump t anther spt, until several imprtant pints in the image are registered like a series f shts.(眼睛的注视时间很短暂。
根据上文“In peple wh scre high in a test f neurticism ( 神经过敏症), eye cntact triggered mre activity assciated with avidance, accrding t the Finnish researcher Jari Hietanen and clleagues.(芬兰研究人员贾里·海廷纳及其团队的研究表明,在神经质测试中得分较高的人(即那些容易产生焦虑等负面情绪的人),与回避行为相关的活动在与他人进行眼神接触时会更加活跃)”以及后文“Peple wh scred high fr negative emtins like anxiety lked at thers fr shrter perids f time and reprted mre cmfrtable feelings when thers did nt lk directly at them.(那些在负面情绪(如焦虑)方面得分较高的人,与他人目光接触的时间会更短,并且当他人不直接看向他们时,他们会感觉更加舒适)”可知,前文说神经质特质的人,对视会触发更多和回避相关的大脑活动,后文举例说这类人更不喜欢长时间对视,A 选项“他们的大脑反应本身就和其他人不同”承上启下,符合逻辑。
